Ewan McGregor Earns Minimum Wage

For the love of the arts!

Ewan McGregor earns millions making movies but has settled for earning minimum wage to perform Shakespeare on stage in London.

The 36-year-old star will earn a mere $790/week — standard minimum wage for actors in Britain — playing Shakespeare‘s arch villain Iago in Othello, opening Dec. 4th.

That’s minimum wage? With a 40-hour work week… minimum wage is $20/hour, which isn’t so bad.

That’s not the national minimum wage:

There are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates from 1st October 2006 are:

£5.35 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older [about $10.60 USD]

A development rate of £4.45 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive [about $8.80 USD]

£3.30 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age. [about $6.50 USD]

Here, I found a blurb on stage actors – the minimum rate is:

UK Actors Get Pay Raise “Actors across the UK have won a £50 a week pay rise, bringing the minimum rate for commercial theatre in the regions to £350 and paving the way for similar wage increases in the small-scale and subsidised repertory sectors.” The Stage 10/27/06

It’s about $693 [USD] per week. There must be an extra performance in his show. But you can’t do a regular 40 hour breakdown on a theatre production.

That’s thier minimum wage? Damn Why can’t America be like the UK?m Oh wait in what 3 or 5 years was it that they were gonna raise it to 7 dollars. Stupid government. Raise minimum wage and that would solve a lot of cultural issues here in the US. Man I think I just might move over there.

Wow! That’s pretty decent for minimum wage…whatever the level.

Considering how expensive England is (well, London in particular) that really doesn’t seem like much.

Still not very much and hardly enough to live off of if you’re an actual stuggling actor (not Ewan) with rent 1,500-2,000+ pounds a month, no doubt, plus food and utilities. It’s REALLY scraping up the cash. Most stage actors have to get second jobs.

With the cost of living adjustments, it works about the same. Don’t forget how cheap things are in the US. The price of petrol [gas] adjusted to USD and gallons works out to $5.79.

Hello bitchin’ economy.

One more reason to love the man :)

God he’s gorgeous! Which i coud see his play, but i’m in ohio so no can do.

Lets not forget the national health system either. Anyone can get medical care – even visitors – just make appointment – walk into doctors office and see a doctor for free. Each prescription costs about $15 – plus lets not get started on their 1 year paid materninty leave for mother’s and paid paternity leave so father’s can stay home and help mother’s for a few weeks. also what about free day care and nursery. Better deal all around – except – the USA is still the land of opportunity.

The UK’s health system isn’t all that great, it can happen that you have to wait months for an operation if you can’t pay for it yourself.

PS: I Love Ewan! :D

Ewan mcgregor , es un gran actor, quiere mucho a su profesion y yo le quiero mucho a él
