Jim Carrey to the United Nations: Balm Burma!

Jim Carrey advised the United Nations Security Council on Friday to ban all international arms shipments to Burma (officially known as the Union of Myanmar). The comedian-turned-activist urged China, Russia and India to back the ban at a press conference held at the UN Plaza in NYC.

Carrey, 45, wants to help win freedom for Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

“This is a government that uses its weapons not in self defense, but against its own citizens,” Carrey said. “The time has come for the United Nations Security Council to start acting less like a group of corporations and more like united nations.”

CArrey, Quit sticking your hand into things you are way too blind and dumb to figure out! If you are too bored, try charity work and environmental protection.

Funny? Because he makes faces? I’ve never thought he was funny, but he could be a good actor when he was more serious. Otherwise, his comedy is very Johnny-One-Note and it gets old very, very quickly.

I don’t understand why people think if someone is an entertainer, they automatically know nothing about the world or politics. That person above saying he doesn’t know what he’s talking about — how do you know? He is a citizen, and if he’s learned about the subject, and is speaking up about it, he is behaving as a true American.

Let him do something besides make goofy faces.

I must take exception to your comments. Aung Sung Suu Kyi is indeed her father’s daughter, and may indeed have won the 1988 elections because she is her father’s daughter. However, after nearly 20 years of house arrest and incarceration, after having to make the incredibly painful choice of supporting her country men or returning to being a mother to her young children and wife to her now late husband, she is MUCH MUCH MORE THAN A PUPPET living on her father’s fame. She has sacrificed 20 years of her life for her beliefs.

We may or may not agree with her choices to leave her 2 sons to the care of their father. I’ve no doubt that at some level her sons think she had abandoned it. I’m very sure I could not make that choice myself. But there can be no doubt that she is Myanmar’s Nelson Mandela. she has suffered much for her country men.

One day, her country men will become free. it is a fact of history that tyrants cannot live forever. When the present tyrant goes, there may be a power struggle which could result in an opportunity for the people. Whatever, whenever and however liberation eventuates, and it will happen, then if the nation of Myanmar were to prosper after the deposition of this military dictatorship, it would largely due to the fact that Aung sung suu Kyi is an example of peaceful resistance and incorruptibility.

Some people have said that Myanmar would not come to this pass if Aung Sung Suu Kyi were more willing to negotiate with the military. I don’t agree. We have to careful not to make a terrible faustian bargain by giving up fundamental principles. If that happens, there will be no freedom from fear.

As for her sons, I hope they will forgive her. I hope that they are truly proud of her. As a mother, my heart weeps for her and her sons.

As for Jim Carrey speaking up – GOOD FOR HIM. As long as he is on the side of the people of Myanmar, I hope he helps keep the cause in the spotlight and raise awareness. The military dictators in Myanmar SUCKS big time.
