Katherine Heigl - "Vanity Fair" January 2008

Katherine Heigl -

Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl continues her rise to the top, letting her guard down for the January 2008 issue of Vanity Fair, as shot by Norman Jean Roy in Los Angeles.

Here are some highlights from the lead article “Heigl Voltage”:

On the Mormon influence in her family’s life before her brother’s death: “A couple of Mormon families were a great comfort [after the death of her brother when Heigl was 7 years old]. Both my parents felt a great desire for answers, and they found an answer in the Mormon church—or answers they could live with, anyway, because there really are none. I didn’t really understand death, so it was very confusing for me. The worst part was watching the devastation of my family. They weren’t the same people anymore. Everything was kind of a mess for a while. It wasn’t like Ordinary People, where it destroyed that family so badly that there was never finding any joy or loving or appreciating being alive again. But I give my parents unbelievable credit for pulling it together, and I give the Mormon church a lot of credit for helping them to do that.”

On Gizzie, the relationship between her Grey’s character Izzie and George (T.R. Knight): “That was kind of a big change for Izzie, wasn’t it, after she was so up on her moral high ground. They really hurt somebody, and they didn’t seem to be taking a lot of responsibility for it. I have a really hard time with that kind of thing. I’m maybe a little too black-and-white about it. I don’t really know Izzie very well right now. She’s changed a lot. I’m trying to figure her out and keep her real… It was a ratings ploy. It was absolutely something that shocked people; it wasn’t predictable, and people didn’t see it coming. It’s our fourth season; there’s not a lot of spontaneity left. And business is business; I understand that, but I want there to be some cooperation between the business end and the creative end, so there’s some way of keeping it real.”

Katherine Heigl – “Vanity Fair” January 2008

On her old-fashioned values: “I … didn’t want to live together before we were married. I still have enough Mormon in me—not a lot, but enough—that I wanted to keep that a little bit sacred.”

On having a hard time loving her summer film Knocked Up:“[The film was] a little sexist. It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. It exaggerated the characters, and I had a hard time with it, on some days. I’m playing such a b—-; why is she being such a killjoy? Why is this how you’re portraying women? Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience, but it was hard for me to love the movie.”

On her close relationship with her mother: “I talk to my mother every day, and I’ve always felt the need to defend or excuse my relationship with my mother. The men in my life can feel, I should be more important in your life than your mother. A lot of men would have problems with that relationship, but Josh is unbelievably mature. He’s really wise and really grounded. He was the first man in my life I could go to with a problem and feel confident that he would help me find a solution. For my mother, Josh is a relief, because at the end of the day, any good parent wants you to be happy, and Josh makes me happy. I laugh a lot more. I’m not as stressed out. My burden is lightened.”

On finding happiness: “As women, we have more of a tendency to be people-pleasers, and I know a lot of women who are not vocal about what makes them happy. I was like that in my early 20s, but not anymore. I spent a lot of time not being clear about who I was and what was important to me. It’s easy to be taken advantage of if you’re not honest. I knew that dance of trying to please a man, trying to guess what they want you to be, and I got really tired of that, really confused and frustrated. I decided I was sick of trying to figure out what everybody else wanted, and I should just decide what I want, and be honest, and not spend all my time guessing. Josh is the first serious relationship I’ve ever had where I was like, This is me. From the moment I met him, I said, This is what I want and what I need.”

On going and picking out the diamond for her ring with singer-songwriter-fiance Josh Kelley: “I’m not really a first-move kind of gal. I’m one of those women who always thinks it’s better to play it cool and keep them wanting more, but I really threw myself at him. I broke all the rules.”

On not being the most confident about tying the knot: “[I don't have any] grand illusions about marriage. I think it’s a crapshoot. The odds are really bad, especially in this town. But I have a lot of faith in Josh, and I wanted to have that one day when I stand in front of my friends and my family and honor him and how important he is in my life. My career is really important to me, but there have to be other great, important things in your life besides work.”

If she finds it hard to love her mpvie knocked up then why did she do the he could have easily said no to it.

  • jesse fan

She’s very goood looking and a great actress – I hope to see her in some good movies soon.

  • sofia

I like that cover. Very nice.

  • [~Famous~] – The God.

what was she ever “great” in?

    arrogant bish.

  • TC

Damn she’s annoying. I don’t know why, but everytime she opens her mouth she annoys the hell out of me.

  • Mia

    Katherine, please STFU and STFD.

  • Pri PREM

wow! really beautiful photography… she looks like a 50′s actress… i lovesss it!

  • Vivian

    Love the pictures very classy

  • Lillianne

She’s definitely one of the breakout actresses on GA. I agree totally with her complete personality change. You could always count on Izzie to take the high ground and then WHAM not only sleeps with a married man but steals him as well. Oh well, another tv show that’s a sellout for ratings.

  • lola

She looks really beautiful. That was a gorgeous photo shoot. She reminds me a bit of Charlize Theron. I’m still not sure whether I like her or not…will have to read the full article.

  • Violet

She’s a pretty woman. I respect her and I agree about Gizzie but I don’t like her interviews. She seems arrogant.

  • Ha!

She doesn’t seem arrogant to me; she seems to know who she is and good for her. It’s pretty sad to hear women who have strong opinions about things constantly called arrogant or bitches. She comes off (at least to me) as well-grounded, confident, articulate and pretty intelligent. That can be an intimidating combination of traits.

  • mac

there’s something about her i just don’t like

  • t

Love love love love love her.

  • in

I used to love her but I think it was because she never got any interviews that showed the real side of her. She just loves to diss the hand that feeds her.
I don’t even watch GA or like it but dissing your own show and character (both which gave her a career which she never had before) lacks self-awareness.

  • ana

LOOOOOVE HER. such a great actress. But i’m kinda getting tired of izzie. i liked her a lot more in the 1s2 and 2nd seasons. RETURN OLD IZZIE!!!

  • Marta

    great photoshoot

  • Tmac

    I don’t think she’s arrogant at all. I think she’s honest. And that’s refreshing.

If she knows who she is, then why do knocked up then whine like a B&tch?? Didn’t this loser read the script?
I know, she knew the film would be successful and used it to advance her career. Just like she knew that if she acted like she was TR Knight’s BFF, she would garner some recognition..

I hate this girl. She is not a good actress and there are far more talented people on Greys, I just don’t get it!

  • Dach

I thought ” Knocked Up” was a funny. I’m assuming she knew that it would a huge success due to the writers and the cast. Unless she did it because someone had a mortgage payment to make and no money in the bank!!!!Don’t diss the movie that puts money in your damn pocket.

  • BAMZS Fan

No more KH, pls Jared! She’s a douche. I can’t believe that I used to like her in “Roswell”.

“Just like she knew that if she acted like she was TR Knight’s BFF, she would garner some recognition.”

I totally agree w/ this quote!!

  • Michelle

I totally agree with her analysis of her character on Grey’s and love that she is willing to call the writers out for that b.s. plot twist. Wonderful.

  • lw

  • Fresh Raggedy Anne

    Such a classic beauty!

Why is everyone hating on her? She’s so real!

  • Jerome

I remember her on Roswell and Wish Upon a Star lol

  • musicisourhigh

I love the cover photo. It was interesting reading her Gizzie opinion. I do agree with her.

  • j

EP and PD have all dissed the show as well. EP says she does not understand her character and that she had no expectations for the show. PD said the writers need to lighten up. They are dissing the hand that feeds them as well, but everyone is talking about KH and saying she needs to shut up WTF?

  • rae

I do not get what is so special about this girl that she keeps getting all these big magazine covers and even an Emmy. I like the photo shoot fine- it’s the style she’s so fond of, but pretty blondes that can act okay are not that rare. And surely there are some that won’t consistently diss every hand that’s offered her a big break- Roswell, Grey’s Anatomy, Knocked Up. She has a heck of an ungrateful pattern.

  • Ha!

I imagine she did Knocked Up because she would have been an idiot not to. Also, perhaps she thought the end result would be different than what actually was produced.

If only jared had posted more than just a part of her quote, people might realize that she didn’t sound the way they thought she did. But that’s nothing new.

  • KC

She annoys me and looks like a Charlize Therson wannabe.

  • Nikki supporter

Your so right. I find nothing appealing about her. She comes across as an opportunist in a negative way and so full of herself.

She said she didnt like the movie knocked up because it was sexist and YET she did it.

Whatta woman, yeah right the epitome of class my asss!!

  • Maria

I agree with her about knocked up, she’s not saying it’s not funny, she’s just saying it was degrading to women, but still i would also do it if i got to act with Paul Rudd. at least she’s telling the truth

  • t

she is so arrogant and ungrateful. Gah she’s annoying.

  • zoe

great actesss and amazingly gorgeous- even without makeup. lovee grey’s anatomy!

  • Lena

Wow, great photos. Seems that the 30s or 50s (???) are her decade- she looks stunning.

  • kimmy

i love Kathine she is so real and classy! And that seems rare in hollywood these days.

so thanks again and keep up the great work!

  • feefee

I really cant stand this arrogant bitch and her simple minded opinions get on my nerves..She really has gotten the “big head” since her Roswell days…

  • jenny

Love the fashion clothes for the photo shoot. Very classy.

  • arg

I agree with people who think she sounds arrogant..if you listen to her awards speeches it’s even worse..”I worked my butt off to get here!” Tell that to seriously excellent actors who are way older and working three jobs because they can’t get roles. Honey, you vaguely resemble Scarlett Johanssen who happens to be hot right now, accept your good luck and zip it!
