Survivor's Denise Martin is a Liar

Survivor's Denise Martin is a Liar

Survivor: China‘s lunch lady contestant Denise Martin may not have won the $1 million prize but her sob story about being demoted from lunch lady to janitor during Sunday’s finale earned her $50,000 on behalf of producer Mark Burnett.

Now, Nancy T. Lane, the superintendent of the Douglas Public Schools in Douglas, Mass., is saying that Denise lied to America. Apparently Denise had been promoted, not demoted, from lunch lady to janitor per her request.

“Yeah, I watched my own jaw drop when she said that, because it’s absolutely not true,” Lane told EW. “I can empathize, having been a working mother. It’s tough to work those night shifts. But she took the job; that’s the job she took leave from [to do Survivor]. If she wants to go back to the day shift, she should apply when one comes open… It’s difficult to grasp. We did nothing but encourage her. She took leave for almost three months, she was given additional times off when ever she needed it. Now she says this on national TV…. Douglas is a nice little town. Everybody was rooting for her, the local paper was bending over backwards with positive articles. Then to have it end this way. Talk about a letdown.”

Press Release: Mrs. Denise Martin
December 17, 2007
Douglas Public Schools

On the “Survivor China” television program that aired on December 16, 2007, Mrs. Denise Martin, an employee of the Douglas Public Schools, stated that she was demoted from her position as a cafeteria worker upon her return from taping the show. This statement is false. In fact, Mrs. Martin held a full-time position as a custodian prior to her participation in the series, and she returned to this same position upon her return from China. Mrs. Martin was granted – at her request – an unpaid leave of absence so that she could participate in the “Survivor” program. We were pleased and excited to support Denise, and have enthusiastically cheered her on throughout the duration of the show.

Although Mrs. Martin was a cafeteria employee prior to her selection as a contestant, she asked to be considered for a promotion to full-time custodian, and was promoted to this position on March 30, 2007. This promotion came with additional benefits and a higher salary. Following her leave, she then returned to this same position.

Regretfully, the Douglas Public School District was inaccurately portrayed as failing to be accommodating to an employee during what the District viewed as a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity. This is far from the case. On the contrary, we granted all requests made by Mrs. Martin so that she could participate in the “Survivor” series. Since Mrs. Martin was on an approved leave, her position was held open for her, and she returned to this same position upon her return from China. As a District, we make every effort to support our employees, and will continue to do so.

People you need to relax. It was a game on a television show. The guy that just won the million dollars lied more then Denise ever did! The game is made up of lies, cheats and the like, that’s the type of entertainment that we all watch Survivor for. Denise was playing up to the other Survivors trying to grasp at anything to stay in the game so she mentioned her job. Key words here are GAME!! The school district needs to relax too.

I just wanna know one thing: is Dennis going to take that 50 k and buzz cut that mullet. I mean, it’s 2007. Let’s focus on the more serious issues, people. Who cares if she’s a lunch lady or a janitor???? Don’t they all pay s*itty??

    Marieme Says:

Denise has always struck me as a snake on the show. She said and did anything to appease everyone to stay in the game. She did not hesitate to stab others in the back to get what she wanted. I really do believe shs lied. Take the check back, Mark! Her whole family should be run out of town for lying!

    You/Me Says:

Um, the school considers it a promotion going from lunch lady to janitor? WTF kind of school is that??
I say she keep the 50K because if Mark wasn’t smart enough to check it out first then boo on him.
And the school should quit using her to get their name in the news!

Denise is a really great person. She didn’t lie or cheat during the game. What makes you think she did after the show? When she came back, she told me that the school hadn’t kept her in the lunch position because of her being a distraction. I believe the school is playing CYA and Denise is telling the truth.

    patty Says:

She didn’t say it while taping the show as part of the game, she said it on the LIVE reunion show. There was no time to check her story before Mark Burnett decided to give her the 50 grand.

It was considered a promotion because it is a higher salery and better benefits, did you even read the article?

  21. 21
    Callie Says:

Ok, didn’t know it was said on the reunion show – I did hear her remark that she was only making $7.00 an hour when talking to Amanda. Still so what – if we are going to go after every person that lies on television then it’s going to get pretty busy out there. Someone made a good point – going from lunch lady to janitor is a promotion? Anway there are more serious issues out in the world – a mullet is not one of them though. Either is someone remarking as Denise did.

  22. 22
    Willow Says:

I believe that the school district is absolutely playing CYA. Lunch lady/janitor same diff. I wouldn’t be so quick to throw Denise to the sharks.

    Bunny Says:

Denise only ended up as one of the final four because she would vote which ever way the other three told her to vote. Not once when she had a chance to make a difference did she take it. She may have been used and at the end dismissed when they no longer needed her, but she had to know her place and it was not going to be in the final three.

Now did she lie about her job or is this the way she sees it or a bit of a pitty me game. Either way she ends up with a nice check. Which is a drop in the bucket for a TV show and make them sound like they care.

I did find it funny as how angry she got by not winning-did she really think she had a chance going into it? Had she watched the show?

    Peaches B Says:

I live in Douglas and know many of the facts here.

Denise is not lying. The school is trying to keep from looking like the bad guys here. The “promotion” that Denise was offered before she left….the job did not open up until over the summer. One of the janitors passed away, the job did not become available while she was still in town. If you search the classified ads for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, they were advertising for the janitor’s job while Denise was filming the show. She left town in March with the understanding that they would hold her job open for her, the school said they would and then changed their mind. After she came home she applied for the janitor’s job.

Promotion? She went from working a full time job during the hours her daughters were in school to working a part time job at night and not being able to put her kids to bed. I would not call that a promotion.
