Orlando Bloom Serves Nepal for UNICEF

Orlando Bloom Serves Nepal for UNICEF

Orlando Bloom wears flower garlands and a red “tikka” mark on his forehead (local symbols of welcome) while visiting ethnic Tharu children and women at the Sayapatri Community Organization in the village of Dibyanagar in Chitwan district, Nepal.

In his role as an international ambassador for the charity UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), Orlando, 30, toured UNICEF-supported programs in the country’s western region November 30 – December 9, 2007, meeting with UNICEF staff, health facilitators and educators, as well as women’s and other community groups.

Nepal is still recovering from a decade-long civil war that left 13,000 people dead, hampered the delivery of basic services and restricted development of the nation. Malnutrition is the underlying cause of more than 60 per cent of child deaths in Nepal; an estimated 51 per cent of children under the age of five stunted in growth and 48 per cent considerably underweight. However, maternal mortality has significantly reduced from an estimated 539 deaths per 100,000 births in 1996 to 281 maternal deaths per 100,000 births in 2006. Child deaths are also on the decline, putting Nepal on track to reach Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5 (the reduction of under-five child mortality and improved maternal health).

    Just Wondering Says:

It seems like he always knows the hot spots, Nepal, utlra trendy, and Villa, again ultra trendy. Seems like that is how his life is lived, the new hot place, religion, girl, and in place. Sorry I am not buying it, now I will sit back and let the fat middle age broads, and the little fan girls scream.

    Karen Says:

    Wow, that’s a new one.
Backwoods, poverty stricken Nepal is now a “hot spot”?
Comparing a small country going through political and cultural upheaval, where the majority of children suffer from malnutrition, to a hip, A-list, LA night spot?
That has to be the stupidest thing anyone has yet posted.
    And that’s really saying something.

It seems to me that some people are just posting any ridiculous thing they can think of that will upset the “fangirls.” They think it’s fun. I personally don’t see the appeal, but then again, I’m not a sociopath so I guess I wouldn’t.

Just think of what kind of desperate, bitter and unhappy place you would have to be in your life to get pleasure from upsetting total strangers, and you’ll get an idea of the motivation behind this.

I guess that’s my problem. I can’t even come close to that level of desperation. My life must seem like sunshine and roses to these poor souls. Maybe we should pity them instead of trying to reason with them. For I think that they are far beyond reason.

    That makes me sad.

*runs off to watch abso-freaking adorable video of Orlando dancing with the Nepalese children*

    OK, I’m better now!

Carmen was a fan in the states who was well known in the Orlando fandon for being obsessive and some say crazy. I think she worked in the business in some way, maybe it was make-up or something, and claimed a lot of insider information.
I think the current fans like to think that anyone who post negatively about Orlando must be Carmen. It makes it easier on them to think only one person in the world doesn’t care for Orlando and his blatant hypocricy so they start yelling Carmen anytime they see it.

@115 I noticed it too. They must be getting tired because he/she isn’t even trying to not be obvious and is complementing his/herself on their great post.

#131 GOSH I’m not an Orlando Bloom fan but I can reconize that he’s got a lot of fans just googled him or go to youtube or else.
You sound like a crazy stalker very scary indeed.
I think it was very nice to him to bring the limlight to this cause.
I don’t understand why people are trying to discouraged his fans that is a very stupid thing to do.
He looks very cute and sincere, so well done to him……
You should try to help the others rather than whining on a gossip blog.

Orlando didn’t really risk much by going to Nepal. He got publicity for UNICEF and himself. It’s a beautiful locale. It doesn’t seem that he really did anything more than a meet & greet and play with the kids. UNICEF’s work there has been done. It would have been more impressive to go some place that aid work had just begun or was needed. I don’t think it makes the fangirls think about Nepal and the troubles of the people there for any longer than it takes to read these posts. Most of them probably couldn’t find Nepal on a map. The fangirls will add it to all of his “charms,” and then move on to the next time he’s on the gossip sites. It seems, based on his previous actions, that will be next week.

    Solene Says:

I think you’re the stupid ones. Celebs are helping Unicef to bring the limelight to a country where children are suffering. They’re not in the country all the time like the volunteers.
You’re so ignorant I bet you didn’t even know where was Nepal, until you post your stupidities.
Good job Bloom, and those pictures are very cute.

you don’t have to be an Orlando fan to post on this thread why some people always assume that all those comments are from his fans.
I post in almost all the threads in this website just to give my opinion.

    reality Says:

He pays a management team an exorbitant amount of money to care for and present his image. His fan base is what will get him movies, and his image is that of a clean cut, young boyish guy. Groping models, wandering around looking high, and deserting injured friends in a wreck, doesn’t appeal to his fans, and damages his image and thereby his earning capabilities. Thus some trips and photo ops that start to clean up his act. If he was intelligent enough to handle his own career and decisions, he may not have to use others to tell him how to play the game, and perhaps it wouldn’t look so blatant. This is a man who in an interview about his sad little movie Haven, said it would be bigger than Pirates, so it is obvious he isn’t the brightest bulb in the pack. He needs to develop a deep and richer fan base, and expand his image. His management team is just working on damage control at this point. His trip with UNICEF, is going to make little difference, I mean really how many people with big money are going to send more money to them, because Orlando goes there. It will, however, melt all the little fangirl hearts, and give lots of aww look at sweet Orlando moments. Those people he met had no idea who he was, and really could not care less. If he is sincere about his concern for humanity, perhaps less time spent at exclusive clubs, and more volunteering at places where he could actually make a difference would be in order. It is very easy to show up, get pictures taken, look good and sweet for the cameras, it is far different be cooking, handing out blankets, or cleaning up at a shelter. If he did a few real work hours regularly as possible with his schedule, then I might believe he is legit. He is not working, he has plenty of time, why doesn’t he use it to really help others.

  13. 138
    Karen Says:

Carmen works as a low end “costumer”, who has never had any direct, or even indirect, contact with Orlando, but always claims insider info.

She has a certain way of writing, well known in the Orlando fandom. A few of these posts, and posts on other threads, reek of her condescension, THAT is why she is being called out.
No, we don’t think that everyone who writes anything negative about the man is Carmen, but she is/was definitely here. Her account at IMDB keeps getting deleted, so she has found a new outlet.

  14. 139
    reality Says:

If you are implying that I am this Carmen, who I have never even heard of, you are sadly mistaken. Perhaps it is just anyone who sounds literate and makes sense is labeled at her. Then they can be dismissed and you can crawl back into your make believe world, where Orlando Bloom is Prince Charming

  15. 140
    @136 Says:

To be fair I think he was joking when he said Haven would be bigger than Pirates. He was well aware it was a little indi film and he kept saying “it needed a lot of love” to make it.

  16. 141
    Karen Says:

Wow. You don’t seem to have a very good grip on ‘Reality’. Maybe you should change your name.
Did I say that everyone who dislikes Orlando is Carmen? No? Didn’t think so. But if you have followed him closly enough to remember his comments about Haven, and now label him a hypocrit for doing charity work, maybe you are. Or are you UnbraidedElf??

“This is a man who in an interview about his sad little movie Haven, said it would be bigger than Pirates, so it is obvious he isn’t the brightest bulb in the pack.”
Are you soooooo dim that you didn’t realize that he was joking?? Pathetic.

But you’re right about “those people” not knowing who he is. But when you look at the videos, they are obviously drawn to him. They must have liked the person he is, not ‘who’ he is.
He is using his celebrity in the best way possible. Bringing awareness to a cause. And unless you are using every spare moment doing volunteer work at a local shelter, as you expect him to do, you have no right to criticize him. Because, you see, that would make YOU the hypocrit.

He didn’t have to go all the way to Nepal to spend four days in a remote area, where there aren’t any four star hotels or room service to be had. He could have stayed at home, and written a check. But he didn’t. He went there to see the progress for himself.
    What a *******.

    crazy like me Says:

“He pays a management team an exorbitant amount of money to care for and present his image. His fan base is what will get him movies”

He pays the standard fee that everyone pays. 10-15 percent. And everyone presents an image. Everyone. And everyone’s fanbase gets them movies. Or are you so dense that you think there are actors that don’t need fans at all? And don’t start naming Oscar winners to me. Those people are in a class all by themselves. The vast majority of actors are in the same boat as Orlando Bloom.

“Groping models, wandering around looking high, and deserting injured friends in a wreck, doesn’t appeal to his fans, and damages his image and thereby his earning capabilities. ”

But I thought his career was already over before the wreck? It’s not like he lost jobs since then, correct? People have been going on about the end of his career for a very long time. And as many pointed out his fans gloss over this and put their blinders on right? Only the righteous few, like yourself, see the truth. There are people that have done far worse things than be in an accident that the police decided was entirely not Orlando’s fault. He looks high in pictures? Your opinion. Not fact. He gropes models? I believe that is model, singular. And I saw that video, the lady in question didn’t seem all that bothered and in the end nothing came of the story so I see no way this damaged Orlando’s image other than to the few vultures sitting around waiting to pounce on the slightest weakness to attack even having to blow minor incidents out of proporiton to bulster their weak case.

“Thus some trips and photo ops that start to clean up his act. ”

A trip for UNICEF that he was supposed to take way back in April but couldn’t for security concerns. Again, the amazing foresight on his part is mind boggling. And you do realize that is the rule in Hollywood to have managers, agents, etc to guide your career? Almost no one does it alone. And if you didn’t see that that was a joke then I am sure you also thought that Orlando’s appearance on Extras conveyed his true feelings for Johnny Depp.

“His trip with UNICEF, is going to make little difference, I mean really how many people with big money are going to send more money to them, because Orlando goes there. It will, however, melt all the little fangirl hearts, and give lots of aww look at sweet Orlando moments”

You act as if Orlando is the only celebrity UNICEF employs to promote its goals. The point of it is to raise awareness, to let people see the work they are doing, and yes to encourage people to donate. If you think UNICEF was at the beck and call of Orlando Bloom you’re not just dumb, you’re crazy.

“Those people he met had no idea who he was, and really could not care less. ”

And yet the children seem enamoured with him. Interesting, isn’t it? No, they don’t know who he is. And he did not go there because meeting a movie star would be a big thrill. He went to raise awareness in the rest of the world about the humanitarian needs in Nepal and the work UNICEF does.

“If he is sincere about his concern for humanity, perhaps less time spent at exclusive clubs, and more volunteering at places where he could actually make a difference would be in order. ”

And how do you know he doesn’t? I am not going to argue about how much time Orlando Bloom spends at exclusive clubs (although, briefly, how many pictures have their been of Orlando over the last few months? And how many of those times was Orlando at an exclusive club? Someone want to count for me? I guarantee the number is very small. But off the top of my head, in all of December he was at a club once. One time. In a whole month. Did he go more? Possibly, but I don’t know and neither do you) but unless you know what he is doing every minute of every day then you have no idea how he spends his time.

” If he did a few real work hours regularly as possible with his schedule, then I might believe he is legit. He is not working, he has plenty of time, why doesn’t he use it to really help others.”

How do you know he doesn’t? Because it’s not being publicized? And if it were? You’d say he was only doing it to make himself look good, raise his earning potential, rehabilitate his image and make his dumb fangirls squee. Am I wrong?

    reality Says:

Ok, I am going to step away from the crazy obsessed people now. I will pomise to move very slowly and not make any sudden movements. Stay calm, and return to your nice rosy, fuzzy, cloud cuckoo land. Of course Orlando is wonderful, and marvelous. Everything you say is true and right. The man should be deified.

Is it safe to turn around yet, have they gone back to gazing at his pictures, and hopefully forgot I was here? Someone tell me if they have gathered the pitchforks and torches and if I should be running as fast as I can.

  20. 145
    Karen Says:

    So that’s your reply?
Anyone who doesn’t think that Orlando Bloom is the Devil incarnate is crazy??
    I say again….pathetic.

  21. 146
    Jill Says:

His reasons for doing it are less important than the fact that he’s doing it at all.

I have way more respect for people like him than I have for other celebrities who shall remain nameless who sit on their asses and count their millions and benefit nobody but themselves.

I am pretty sure that at no time did I invoke the name of Satan, just let me check. Yes postive that no references to Lucifer, Beelzebub, the Antichrist, the beast, father of lies, Prince of Darkness or the angel of light were mentioned. Said as she cowers with in her safe room.

    lauren Says:

I’m not an huge Orlando fan, but after seeing the video and pictures of him in Nepal, I really think he is genuine about bringing awareness to these people. Sure, people say he could be doing MORE, because he has all that money, blah blah. But the point is, that he’s doing it at all. He certainly doesn’t need to recover his image, because it’s never been lost, and b/c he doesn’t need to promote anything. Heck, he’s been acting for years and years without a break. Finally, he has a break now from his acting work, and is using his free time to do things like this, when he could be partying up a storm in L.A. everynight, or visiting glamourous parties for publicity.
The video is up on youtube, btw, if anyone wants to see it.

  24. 149
    crazy like me Says:

Oh, reality, you’re as obsessed as anyone. Why else would someone that clearly dislikes a person follow their every move?

  25. 150
    reality Says:

Of course, I am interested, but achieving mass hysteria when someone questions his motives, no, I think not. I am just as entitled as anyone to express a reasonable opinion, even if it differs from yours. Now, I think it may be time for your medication.
