Heath Ledger -

Heath Ledger: 1979-2008

Excerpt from the article: “The tragedy struck in the midst of an already hectic day in the entertainment industry, as Hollywood reacted to the morning’s announcement of the Oscar nominations and the latest buzz emanating from Sundance. But word spread with lightning speed via cell phones and BlackBerries, and in nearly every case was met with disbelief. One high-ranking studio exec, after receiving an e-mail stating that Ledger was dead, quickly wrote back: ‘What — you mean his career?’ Charlize Theron learned the news while walking a red carpet at Sundance. Josh Hartnett was blindsided at a Sundance Q&A by a question about Ledger‘s death; he struggled to answer even as the crowd jeered the man who had asked it. The passing of an actor in his prime — he earned his first Oscar nomination at age 26 for Ang Lee‘s Brokeback Mountain and was just months away from reinventing the Joker in the highly anticipated Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight — seemed too shocking to absorb at first, while at the same time painfully familiar. Within minutes of the story breaking, some 300 entertainment reporters, cameramen, photographers, and fans began to descend on Ledger‘s building, creating a tableau that resembled a grisly perversion of a movie premiere. Bystanders snapped photos on cellphones and paparazzi climbed the fire escape of the building across the street hoping for shots into Ledger‘s fourth-floor loft. ‘It’s crazy — he was so young,’ said one stunned observer.”

One of the finest actors in existence. Until a day ago. Tragic, tragic loss. He by rights should have won the 2006 Oscar for his Brokeback Mountain performance. A truly great accomplishment of acting.

I don’t want to know the reason why you’re so insensitive… but you are. Would you like for people to forget you the day after you pass? So soon? This is how people grieve, whether they knew him personally or not… let people grieve their own way… don’t tell people what to do or how to grieve.

“…paparazzi climbed the fire escape of the building across the street hoping for shots into Ledger’s fourth-floor loft.

    That is so sick!

  • janie

I agree with you, Steph. Stevie- If you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all.

  • thisisfreakingawful!!!!!!!!!!!

i so agree with u steve. i am from spain, i just knew him from a few movies, he was really good. I feel really sad, and really sorry for his family, everybody should grieve him if they want. i just saw a video in http://www.theinsideronline.com in which charlize theron, dennis hooper are really sorry for this tragic moment, and they probably didnt know him, but they grieve him, as a lot of people in the world is doing rigth now, because this is how people react to a moment like this

    RIP heath

This is really upsetting, my heart goes out to his family.

Celebrity deaths usually don’t bother me, but this one really does. I never met him, but Ledger seemed like a down-to-earth, grounded guy.

    Sad.

    RIP.

  • Padma

Actually I think as much as admired Heath and as sad as I am that he’s dead and as much he deserved a tribute like that – to have a magazine published with him on the cover just a few days after his death looks like they just want to make money out of it – and THAT he doesn’t or didn’t deserve.

    Anyways, RIP, beloved Heath

  • Steph

It’s allright Jared, You’re doing great! Besides, this isn’t the news people… this is a celebrity site…

  • mia

Great cover, truly worthy! This is just tremendously sad, i just watched Brokeback Mountain this weekend. Wow, utterly speechless…

amazing guy! great hearted & talented young actor…

    Such a loss. RIP Heath.

#11, he was 2nd place for me after Philip Seymour Hoffman’s haunting portrayal of Truman Capote.

  • Queena

This is just horrible. I saw the video of his family issuing a statement yesterday and it completely broke my heart. So young ..

And unfortunately for you jbond and alex, JustJared isn’t a paparazzi site. You want stalkers who climb the fire escape of the building across the street hoping for shots of a celebrity who just died? Go look somewhere else.

  • Anon

I read the EW article. Christopher Plummer who was filming with him in London talks about they were filming late at night, out doors in horrible damp very cold weather for days. And he said Heath had this “stubborn bug” he couldn’t shake and everyone thought he had walking pneumonia at least. He also said Heath was in a fantastic mood even though he was having terrible problems sleeping and he said Heath was looking forward to directing his first film about a chess player. This is just SO sad to me.

    why him? why now?

  • Ely

I at least hope, that he knew how truely special he was to so many people out there. We’re all praising him now, and he’s not hearing it, its so sad. It kinda puts things into perspective, we have to show people how much we love them now, and remind them what they mean to us. Praise them, show your appreciation, cause you just never know. Anywho, at least his family, and his daughter will be able to realize how loved Heath was and how he has been missed

Actor Heath Ledger was found dead in a New York City
apartment on January 22nd. Heath was born April 4th, 1979,
in Perth Australia. He was nominated for an Oscar portraying
cowboy Ennis Del Mar in the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain.
    .
The cause of death has not been released.
Hollywood has lost a major rising star, but Heath will
always live on in the hearts of his fans, friends and family.
    .
Hollywood lost much more than a great actor, Hollywood
lost a great and humble man, who was never caught up
in the “I am a star” ego trip.
    .
Some stars need to belong in the heavens.
But Heath Ledger’s warmth and light will always be upon
us, and he will never be forgotten.
    .
    Rest In Peace, Heath Ledger.
    April 4th, 1979 – January 22nd, 2008

i know this may not be Hollywood or sensational enough for many people, but they say he had pneumonia. For anyone who’s been in New York City the past couple of days, it has been so bitterly cold. Just speculation but that may be the cause of death, something like hypothermia. But people will continue to focus on the drugs cuz that makes for better headlines.

    how sad ):

  • janebird

I just want to say I’ve always liked Heath’s acting and have followed his career from the beginning because he was my high school crush but I don’t like this James Dean syndrome of blowing up actors to be more than they were just because they died. It’s fake to me.

He was a good actor that showed a lot of potential and promise but dont’ all of a sudden act like he’s Marlon Brando when you didin’t feel that way when he was alive.

    Heath struck me as the type of guy that was unpretentious and didn’t like people kissing his ass and making him seem greater than he was so don’t do it after his death! He was just a good actor who could have gone to become a great one and it’s very sad that he is gone.;

  • janebird

and don’t all of a sudden say he’s the best actor in existence because you didn’t feel that way when he was alive! I don’t like all this fake bandwagon jumping that happens when a young male actor dies young! It’s what the fangirls do with River Phoenix too and it’s annoying. sure it’ sad they are gone and they had talent and a lot of presence but they were not Marlon Brando so stop acting like they were. And you know all the people that were bitching about him playing the Joker and saying they thought he would be a terrble joker are now going to change and be fake and act like his Joker is the best creation in the history of film. I liked Heath Ledger’s acting and am still very sad that he’s gone but don’t be fake and all of overrate everything he’s ever done just because he died. That’s fake.

    you’ll be loved & missed.
    god bless his family

  • santeezy

this is madness.!! im deeply saddened by this loss.

  • amber

Janebird, you took the words out of my mouth. I didn’t like him much as a person, he was an okay actor, and okay to look at. But I still feel very sad for his family, especially his daughter, and for him if he was in pain or going through something.

  • korean

    so….sad

    R.I.P

    miss you…..ㅠ.ㅠ

  • LYB

nominated for an Oscar at the age of 26, he was young and talented, he had a very promising career ahead of him, what a loss!!
