Russell Crowe is in a State of Play

Russell Crowe films his new movie State of Play on Monday in downtown Los Angeles, Calif.

According to IMDB, the movie is based on the BBC mini-series of the same title where a team of investigative reporters work alongside a police detective to try to solve the murder of a congressman’s mistress.

Russell replaced Brad Pitt in the movie due to disagreements about the shooting script.

The BBC mini-series was fantastic & won loads of awards. I wish Hollywood would leave these things alone & stop re-making everything !

Always good to see Russell working-but hate the hair!!

I can´t understand now that I once thought that Russell was very good looking LOLLOL LOL!! But he is an excellent actor so I am sure he will do a good job in this movie!

Ummmm….Russell…dude…lay off the fatburgers and beer, buddy! WOW! Somebody got really porky during their hiatus. No wonder he was free to take this role at the last minute. And I thought Ridley Scott told him to lose 30 pounds before they start filming “Nottingham” in April? In order to do that he’d have to lose the weight during filming SOP, which leads to continuity issues. I sure hope he doesn’t have a weight clause in his Nottingham contract….

Ack! Russell. Russell. Man some guys just do not age well at all. He looks awful. It isn’t just the food. You can’t drink and otherwise indulge as he has and not pay a price with your body and face.

    Who’s idea is that hair?

Hope selling out on this movie was worth it.

  • Mimi

Russell looks all man, all hunky … I love a little [not too much] muscular meat on a man. And the hair! Ah… nothing like natural chestnut waves.

It’s length gives me hope that he’s keeping it long for playing the Sheriff of Ridley Scott’s Nottingham, hopefully still on the radar scope and will get under way when the WGA strike ends… after filming on State of Play wraps, of course.

  • Sunny

Russell’s aging naturally, which seems to bother some people. Not me. I’m so sick of botoxed, tucked, plucked, liposuctioned and hairless sissy boys “of a certain age” trying to look young. They never look natural and often ruin their acting careers because the camera doesn’t lie.

  • bianca

This movie is going to be sooo good now that Russell is in it and not Brad. Brad is too Hollywood to play a detective.

  • groundcontrol

Brad played an excellent detective in Seven. As did Russell in LA Confidential. Not so much Rough Magic.

I wouldn’t call overdrinking and overeating and otherwise overindulging, aging naturally. Maybe if he had taken better care of himself in his 30s, he wouldn’t look so bad in his early 40s. He needs Brad’s trainer for Troy (rumored to be soon training Brad for The Fighter).

Poor Russell. He has lost his looks way too soon. No matter how well you can act, looks play a big part in any career. If he can accept being targeted for good character roles then he’ll be fine.

  • its me

Russell never had classic good looks – he was never pretty. His looks have always been rugged and charismatic. He definately still is sexy and has more sex appeal than alot of other actors his age.

  • anonymous

i love russell crowe he is a magnificent actor , i’m going to love this movie.

  • anonymous

by the way brad doesn’t have the look for a detective , he wouldn’t have been able to pull it off.

  • mouche

Aging naturally – for chriss sake the man is only 44 years old…I don´t think looking more like he is in his late fifties is hunky and natural! I must say I am surprised that he doesn´t take better care of himself.

  • lulu

He is palying detective in this film ? I thought the role is a top notch journalist.

  • Liz

I guess no one remembers a movie called “The Insider” ? Crowe put on 40 pounds for that – and took it off again.
The real life men I know in the mid forties look just like Crowe. The late fifties certainly don’t . LoL
Crowe is REAL. And that’s his appeal as a monstrously talented actor.
He’ll still be sexy in his 70′s.

Has anyone considered the idea that the ROLE may call for this detective to be a little on the heavy-side and the time period is when men wore their hair long? Plus, the scene in these photos – he’s just been beaten up! Yeah, he doesn’t look like a runway model! He’s ACTING – with make-up! Come on guys, Russell has ALWAYS played true to the character no matter how it made him look! Remember “The Insider”? He even had to get married with that long blond hair because he had not been released from M&C yet. He HATED that long hair and had it cut AS SOON as he got word he would not be called back to re-film any scenes.
Russell has a personal trainer so he’ll take it off, have no doubt about that!

  • nicole

who will watch this movie if this sh@t is in it? fugly

  • kate

He is really fat and ugly.

  • anonymous

Russell is not playing a detective in this movie. He’s a journalist. he’s not supposed to be fat.

I guess it’s all a matter of taste but some people here have pretty low standards. Out of shape is not hunky.

Crowe is no longer at the age where you can put on weight and take it off easily. The Insider was a while ago and I think that weight gain affected his body for the worse and maybe permanently.

Sadly Crowe is going to age like Brando. It’s not going to be pretty.

  • Lola

    There’s Mickey!

“The real life men I know in the mid forties look just like Crowe…”
Really – because the last four years mr C has looked like he lived on a strict diet of whiskey, bear, cigarettes, hamburgers, chips, and cookies, combined with a lot of really late and hard nights out and about lol lol lol!

  • mouche

Oopsi poopsi,I meant that he looked like he drank a lot of beer not bear of course lol lol …although he looks more and more like a bear!

  • dANIELLA

Russell in a new pic! Whoo! He is incredibly talented. I love his films. I also enjoy his singing!

  • aj

Russell looks awesome so stfd haters. He’ll be 1000x better in this role than Brad will ever be. And Brad’s looks are deteriorating even faster . Have you the recent pics of Brad at SBIFF? LMAO, he looks like Robert Redford’s grandfather.

  • Paloma

I wonder what his looks have to do with his acting performance. It’s the latter one that counts. I can only agree with those reminding of his earlier performances (Insider…) where he didn’t have problems putting on and losing weight. On the other hand it is also true that such things will get harder the older he gets.
If some here are talking of being ‘natural’ that’s what I love about him, too. He doesn’t pretend. He doesn’t play the Hollywood game – being handsome in order to being appreciated as an actor isn’t that important to him. Neither it should be to us.

I’ve always been entertained, Mr Crowe!

  • Muchacha

I love Russell’s movies and I believe he will be terrific in this movie just like he did in all the others. Yes he gained weight but he still looks handsome to me and it does not change his great acting skills.

  • Layne

On the worst day of his life, Russell Crowe would look better than any other man in the world on his best day-including Brad Pitt!

I just saw him last week in Jacksonville & he did not look old or fat. True, he’s not as thin as he used to be, but he looked good. I think alot of the the look in those pictures are for the movie

Well, dear, since your stalking him to Jacksonville would make you one of his die hard Russell-can-do-no-wrong fans, then I think we can take your views of his looks as just a tad biased.

When are these women going to stop embarrassing themselves over him? This is sad.

Fact is he was once a very attractive man. He isn’t anymore. I’m sure it’s a combination of bad genes and Russell’s own abuse of his body. Unfortunately Marlon Brando was also quite gorgeous. We saw what happened to Marlon. I see that same fate for Russell. Shame.

Sweetie, that’s some grand delusion you got going there. Russell in his best years can’t touch Brad Pitt as he is now at 44. Pitt is simply classically handsome and still has the body of Adonis.

Not that I have to explain myself to you – I happen to live in Jacksonville, so I went to the game. Yes, I am a fan of Russell Crowe, but Iam also a fan of others, and he may not look like Brad Pitt, (who didn’t look so good at the SAG awards)but he can act circles around him.

Oh please. In no way do Russell Crowe’s personal life and habits resemble those of Marlon Brando. They both may be fine actors, but Brando’s offscreen life was a shambles.

By comparison, Russell leads a pretty disciplined lifestyle
these days. If he looks a bit “tubby” for this role, it’s because he’s SUPPOSED to look that way. He is far too meticulous in his preparations for a movie to “show up” any way OTHER than what is required for his character.

As for the remark someone here made that Russ never was a pretty man, that person must be unfamiliar with Russell’s earliest movie roles. He was damned pretty!

  • bear

Uh he had to gain weight for his role in Body Of Lies! You people act like he’s just being fat and lazy ugh Russell is very athletic and active but he said when he was promoting American Gangster that Ridley begged hiim to gain a lot of weight to play an fat, obnoxious person and people have come up to him and he’s had to explain that’s why he looks the way he does at the moment. lol.

He just shot that movie before State of Play. He was even BIGGER for that role. Now he is slowly taking it off and by the next film he does with Ridley he is going to take a lot more weight off. This is what Rusell does. He gains weight and loses it depending on how the director wants the character to look. Anyway I think Russell is way more sexy than Brad Pitt any day. And a much better actor.

And despite his much publicized flare ups, I like him he seems real and a devoted family man. And I like how unlike Brad and Angelina and the others he gives tons of money to charities all over the world but doesn’t go out of his way to publicize it. He’s a good man, Russell. Anyone remember his beautiful Oscar speech?

I agree. If Russell gain weight for Body Lies (very small role) Why he don’t lose this weight for SOP? His role don’t need to be fat.

  • Tina

    He is gorgeous, yummy!

After reading some hate fuled comments regarding Russell Crowe and his appearace, I can’t help but wonder what you people look like? If you were in fact born with a brian you might step back and analyze your thought process. First of all, Russell is making a movie and the visionaries for this movie may have wanted Russell to have long hair and carry extra weight. Looking back to Gladiator, he lost weight and built his body to portray a Roman General, a boxer in Cinderella Story, In Mystery Alaska he had a little extra because that is what happens to people in cold climates in addition to the fact he was a hockey player. By nature, hockey players are not small men. Futher more he lives in Austrailia, 17 time zones away and about 16 hours by air, he has to adapt to Jet Lag, Airline meals, noisy airplane cabins, lack of fresh air, Russell is a public figure and he has to deal with papparazi, unimanageable hotel concens including broken telephones, fans trying to gain access to his suit, long long working days, food on the run, set catering and alike. If you profess to be true Crowe fans then I suggest you look inside your heart and embrasse his art either through acting or music. I find Russell to be a brilliant artist and through his charitable soul and causes I am a better person knowing I stand for honor. He paid to rebuild the Jewish childrens school that was fire bombed in Toronto, if you find reason to loath him, then ultimately, you loath yourself.
