Heath Ledger's Family Responds

Heath Ledger's Family Responds

Heath Ledger’s father, Kim, just released a statement on behalf of the Ledger family in response to the Medical Examiner’s findings:

“We remain humble as parents and a family, among millions of people worldwide who may have suffered the tragic loss of a child. Few can understand the hollow, wrenching, and enduring agony parents silently suffer when a child predeceases them. Today’s results put an end to speculation, but our son’s beautiful spirit and enduring memory will forever remain in our hearts. While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath‘s accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage.

“Our family enjoyed an extremely happy two week visit with Heath just prior to the New Year. Those recent precious days will stay with us forever. We as a family feel privileged to have some of his amazing magic moments captured in film. To most of the world Heath was an actor of immeasurable talent and promise. To those who knew him personally, Heath was a consummate artist whose passions also included photography, music, chess and directing. We knew Heath as a loving father, as our devoted son, and as a loyal and generous brother and friend.

“We treasure our beautiful granddaughter Matilda (to our dear Michelle) as well as an unbelievably wonderful network of close friends, forever, around the world. Families rarely experience the uplifting, warm and massive outpouring of grief and support as have we, from every corner of the planet. This has deeply and profoundly touched our hearts and lives. We are eternally grateful.

“At this moment we respectfully request the worldwide media allow us time to grieve privately, without the intrusions associated with press and photography.”

Not everyone’s a pharmacologist. We all don’t know if a two drugs together will act synergistically or have a lethal outcome.

His family is very eloquent, my heart goes out to them. I really hope people will give them the space and privacy they deserve.

When you mix medications it is usually an accident when death occurs. People who try to kill themselves will take large doses of drugs. none of the drugs in his sytem were enough to kill him. It was the combination that kill him which means accidental. Unless he was a pharmacist or chemist he would not be aware of it. How many people really read all the warning labels and truly understand them? Unless you are a medical professional few of us do.

    RIP HL

  • Didi

an accident is something thats unintentional. so yes, you can ‘accidentally’ take a legal cocktail of drugs if you’re an idiot, like heath. he probably had to much cocaine in his system to know what he was doing. they’ll never admit that though cos its a classic hollywood whitewash. the medical examiner was probably heavily bribed.

  • You/Me

I really really feel for this family, I cannot imagine going through this nor do I ever want to know. God Bless them and Heath.

What really irks me is wtf is wrong with celebs that they don’t understand the dangers of mixing prescription medication and overdosing. I mean, this is just common sense, no disrespect intended toward Heath, but seriously!!?? How many times now has this happened to HW stars and yet apparently nobody learns from it?!

I understand Heath’s father remarking on the “hidden dangers” of mixing prescribed medications but in all honesty I don’t think the dangers are hidden…..like I said, common sense. This was a careless death and should not have happened. I don’t think Heath did it on purpose but he could and should have been more careful. People need to pay attention…..especially HW so it seems.

In any case, Kim’s words are beautiful and the situation is tragic. I pray that his family is able to pull through this together and able to smile at his memories without tears of sorrow. Heath was a great one. :-(

  • Didi

medical labels are for the public and are easy to understand unless youre an idiot…like heath. thats why they tell you to read the instructions carefully (or s-l-o-w-l-y if you’re an eejit) and not to do a ‘tom cruise bartender’ job and starting mixing cocktails up.

  • You/Me

    ——-

You are right. But doctors ALWAYS ask if you are taking any other medication before prescribing something…..for a reason. If you lie you are scr*ewed, and if you don’t know that taking more than two different prescribed medications may pose a danger then you are careless and extremely uninformed. Which in Heath’s case proved fatal.
I don’t think he did it on purpose but he d*mn sure could have been more careful. You NEVER mix prescribed meds before asking a professional. H*ll, you aren’t even supposed to mix over the counter unless you ask a pro first!

  • KiKi

Why would it be intentional ? He has a kid, he wouldn’t try to kill himself. He loved Matilda dearly. So, for those who can’t read, it was an accident.

Rest in peace, Heath, you were such a gifted actor, such a beautiful human being.

The FDA is pulling all sorts of cough/cold medicine because of accidental overdose deaths of children.

Mixing medications is something a lot of people do with the assumption an over-the-counter medicine is benign (or it would be regulated).

Heath Ledger is hardly the first person to take an over-the-counter medication and not realize it could be dangerous when mixed with something else he was taking. And he isn’t the first person to die from it, either.

Calling him an idiot for it is cruel (and a sad attempt to outrage people, apparently for the thrill of upsetting others by being rude).

    It’s sad all around.

  • Natalie

I have a lot of respect for Heath, his family, and Michelle. They’ve kept it private.

  • jannie

The cause of death was “acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine,” spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said in a statement.

The drugs are the generic names for the painkiller OxyContin, the anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Xanax, and the sleep aids Restoril and Unisom. Hydrocodone is a prescription painkiller.

There you have it; a druggie, albeit a prescription one at the time. I imagine if there was another pam or lam or mine or done he would have taken it. I mean you’ve got to use everything at your disposal, right? No half measures. (I have to add that I suspect only habitual users of illegal drugs would be taking this many legal drugs at the same time; they get to the point in which taking drugs is their life).

  • xxlostGirl92xx

“Few can understand the hollow, wrenching, and enduring agony parents silently suffer when a child predeceases them.”

I think this sums up everything. A tragic loss of a wonderful actor and loving father, Heath will be missed by many.

Rest In Peace Heath Ledger xxx

  • jannie

The idea that a druggie would be “careful” about prescription medications is nonsense. Read the label? Don’t make me laugh. These people just get as many drugs as they can get doctors to give them and then pill pop with abandon. Read the label…..sheeesh….don’t make me fall on the floor laughing.

  • joneblaze

Even weeks later its hard to accept his death.
But those who accused him taking cocaine and other illegal drugs, and wanted to drag his name through the mud should be ashamed of themselves.

Rebecca White who bad mouthed Heath to Inside Edition.Shows like Entertainment Tonight and The Insider,US magazine,The New York Post who tried to invent some type of conspiracy theory, who these days make deals in backrooms with siblings, relatives and former lovers to get the dirt on celebs.Instead of focusing on real entertainment stories they would rather follow around poor souls that are obviously suffering some mental breakdown.

I praise The New York Daily News Krissy Mac,Joel McHale of the E channels The Soup,
    Scarlett Johannson,Natalie Portman,Josh Brolin,Sarah Jessica Parker,Mathew Broderick,
Mel Gibson,Sean Penn,Jake Gyllenhaal,Naomi Campbell,Mike Myers and Access Hollywood who stood up against the aforementioned media and called and wrote to them to cease with there degrading coverage.

I feel quite bad for the whole celebrity lifestyle. I think sometimes the whole spotlight gets to some of them to the point where even if they do have kids, they still intentionally try to hurt themselves. Please note I’m not talking about Heath, just in general.

    Didi sh** up

They found no drugs, no cocaine in his system (his analayses evidenced according to the police)

He was clean for more than two years

  • TiredofthisCrap

Hollywood whitewash are you people serious? Do you understand in this day and age nothing is “covered up”. This is the inofrmation age, we catch celebrities digging up their noses in the privacy of their own homes. Bribing a government official? Sure Heath Ledger’s family went and paid off the medical examiner. Someone please explain to me the reason why his death would be covered up? People are going to see Batman regardless of what the cause of his death, so that rules that answer out. Heath Ledger wasn’t perfect and no one has made him out to be perfect, so I don’t understand the need to cover up his death.

For all of you dumbasses who don’t know, drugs takes weeks to clear out of your system, just because they found those drugs in his system doesn’t mean he had recently taken them. It is called an accident, because there was not enough of one drug to kill him, but a mixture of all of them that had a lethal reaction.

People are paranoid and hateful on the Internet.

  • Ha!

Didi – You prove yourself to be an first-class cynic (and apparently a conspiracy theorist) every time you post your rants. Go away, you insensitive soul. Are you having a bad day or are you always this negative?

    @jannie

I guess I am junkie according to you because I have four of those drugs you named in my medicine cabinet. I need the Valium for airplane flights , I actually held up a plane from taking off because I started to panic. Xanax for after I was robbed at gunpoint, I was little afraid to go out of my home for a while. And the sleep aids well to sleep, let me get myself into rehab. The funny thing is after taking the Xanax I couldn’t sleep, hence the need for the sleep aids. So I had some of thise drugs in my system at one time. And my physician and therapist were well aware that I had all of these drugs.

I don’t have oxycotin but I do have some Tylenol with codeine in my medicine cabinet. Shoot I need to get me a bunk right next to Amy Winehouse.

  • i see

i noticed that some people are more invested in being right than accepting the facts presented to them. those that were so sure it was a suicide will continue saying that was the case. those that say he overdosed on illegal drugs will continue saying it’s an overdose. some people just want to be right and will always hate being proven wrong.

Didi and Jannie, my God. You two are the scum of the earth. Why are there so many insensitive, uncaring, non-empathetic, unfeeling IDIOTS (yes, I am turning this around on *you*) out there on the internet? His family is going through enough with his death. They shouldn’t EVER be subjected to crap comments like you two cretins spout.

  • neil

Heath was guilty of recklesness, not suicide.
Perhaps this is the dangerous flip side of a gifted soul.
The brightest flames are allways the quickest to expire.
You’ll never grow old, Heath! RIP.

  • shaking my head

Its the cover up for suicide. Its Hollywood and drug users are heroes.
Pretty messed up values and morals today.
MOST ACTORS AND ACTRESSES DO DRUGS AND THEY’RE THE ONES WHO CAN AFFORD THEM.

  • try kindness and understanding

I’m waiting for didi to say something intelligent. Surprise us! The gloating, mean, insensitive cynical stupidity from you is getting old.

Many times a person who is prescribed the meds that Heath was taking are suffering from several disorders at the same time. He hadn’t been able to sleep and was absolutely drained from working on the Dark Knight. The exhaustion can make a person desperate and extremely lacking in judgement as far as their welfare is concerned. They just want relief. The overload of symptoms and drugs to treat each one can make one temporarily very reckless, cognatively impaired, groggy and out-of-it. That’s why these accidents happen. And yes, famous rich people persuade doctors, usually more than one, to give them another pill for whatever.

Heath Ledger no doubt was guilty of having impaired judgement, being reckless and feeling desperate for relief. I’ve suffered from exhaustion and I know how debilitating mentally and physically it can be.

Heath was a fine actor and will blow us all away in the Dark Knight. He paid a very high price for his art…Death. Have some respect for the tragic end to a potentially great artist.

    Heath, RHIP

  • Vicky

He was irresponsible and reckless with the drugs. Very sad for him especially his baby. His problem of sleep are signs of depression.
But most of the time you can simply detect by their appearances and behavior if they do drugs. I,for one observe their eyes. No doubt this is tragic for his family because its also guilt that they were not able to help him or witness the signs or figure out why he’s not sleeping or why their son is unhappy. Most cases people like Ledger have a good way of disguising their problems.

  • Lobo

“These People” “Idiot like Heath” What is wrong with you people?
None of us know what was going on with him or his life. He was a wonderful actor who died too young and will be greatly missed. His family has been a picture of grace and dignity through this heartbreaking ordeal. Judging someone on opinion and/or the
vindictive reasoning I have read here is maliciously wrong and cruel.

  • sad

In a way, the Batfans killed him along with the media. The pressure was too much and the expectations were unrealistic. All the mockings on him and all the gay persecutions from Brokeback and you know Batfans didnt exactly embrace Ledger with open arms.
They didnt want a Jokeback actor on their so called elite team.
Even Daniel Craig experienced this same problem. He told the London press how depress he was for many months and was close to quitting because the fans and media were attacking him as a no good 007.

How can a studio like WB not notice something weird of their actor taking his role to the edge and isolating himself for months in a hotel.
They see the wack signs and that’s art?????
Like Bale, sure I admire him but his constant & drastic losing of his weight is not good for his heart.
Anthony Hopkins said this of his life too that being too artistic and intense with his roles gave him a bad health that almost killed him; he told Oprah this 2 years ago.
Going great lengths for movies is not worth it. Think about your life and even your family.

HL was a great actor and the world will miss his oscar worthy acts to have come if he lived.

Didi/Janine they write such idiotic things because they live to see their posts being talked about by others. Good or bad they thrive on seeing their posts talked about. These are pathetic human beings. I feel good about giving them two three sentences to sheer up their sad lives

  • cathy

please keep your sanctimonious claptrap to yourself that is such a dumb excuse and you are an extremely dumb junkie apologist for believing it, so youre saying just because he was ‘very tired’ he lacked judgment and decided to drug himself silly hoping it’d work. lots of people get tired and drained working yet they do not decide to play doctors and start chomping everything in the medicine cabinet like their on acid,. ONLY IDIOT JUNKIES LIKE HEATH DO THIS, because they have a drug habit and its worked for them before. a concoction like that also gives them a high and he liked it. people abuse prescription drugs because they are psychologically and chemically addicted so they cant stop, they also develop a high tolerance for the stuff which means they need more and more of the sh*t to achieve the same high. thats why they get complacent and think they can chomp 10 or 15 tablets in one go. its a vicious cycle. what we dont know is whether he did it intentionally or unintentionally. hes still a d*ckhead for doing it both ways.

    Shaking My Head

You seem to have something against Actors and Actress of HW. If you think all of HW is using drugs you are stupid. Hollywood is just like any other city in American or any other Country. There are regular people that do drugs and we do not know it. Hollywood cannot hide because everything that goes on there is info for the general public. Regular folks over dose on prescription drug everyday and regular folks overdose on drugs everyday. I take tylenol every day for my arthritis and some time I forget if I took it.

  • Dancer

Didi and Jannie–how cruel you both are. You are so determined to be right and to spout your opinion on us all that you don’t care that there are people on this list grieving because they cared and admired Heath as a person and actor. Shame on you for your tactlessness, cruelty and just plain obstinate bullheaded ignorance.
Yes you have an opinion, but for once you could just shut it!

  • Didi

you idiots are oversensitive. he was just some junkie actor. big deal he’s dead. people die everyday so get over it. i’d rather sympathise with someone who died of cancer or got hit on the street by a drunk driver because they didn’t ask to die..its unfortunate and a tragedy. heath played with his own life by popping pills so he deserved everything he got.
