OlderLeo DiCaprio: Akira's Kaneda?
Leonardo DiCaprio will reportedly play the lead character Kaneda in the live action feature-film Akira, reports AICN. Former 3rd Rock From the Sun star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is also rumored to play Tetsuo.
Warner Bros. recently announced that it will be taking anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo‘s six-volume cyberpunk serial manga (Japanese word for comics) Akira to the big screen. The film is set in a New Manhattan, a city rebuilt by Japanese money after being destroyed 31 years ago.
If the rumor is true, DiCaprio would not only star in the film, his production company Appian Way, would produce with Andrew Lazar‘s Mad Chance.
The first Akira film is set for a summer 2009 release.

I doubt that a 33 year-old American will play an approximately 16 year-old Asian boy! Sounds silly!
Leo played a teenager in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, he was supposed to be a high school kid..I found he did a fabulous job in that role as Frank Abagnale. Leo has a very youthfull look to him, he hardly looks 33 unless he has a heavy beard….lol!
Clean shaven Leo can get away with it..Its a cool role for him, I also like the idea of Joseph Gordon Levitt will play Tetsuo..you go Leooooo!
The too old is not what´s really bothering me (though it´s certainly one point to think about), but rather the fact that they choose him of all people.
Not only does he NOT fit the role, but he´s not even asian to begin with.
And he´s a damn bad actor most of the time.

Black you have it all wrong, Leonardo was already an Oscar nominee by the time he was 19 for WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE way before Titanic, so many actors not only praise his works so do directors, producers, many more and his many fans worldwide.
Actors don’t have control once the film is finished its up to the studios to decide if their film has a shot at Oscars. So Leo is no Oscar *****as you like to call him, then I guess all other actors are Oscars ***** then.
As God forbid should an actor be nominated by his peers…lol!
Ben Kingsley wasn’t Indian to play GHANDI, so why can’t a non Asian play an Asian role. Thats why they are actors.
umm the movie is based in new manhattan, so therefor the chracter doesnt have to be asian.
is it the mode now in hollywood to make manga-based movies? Asiat stuff begins to be popular in the USA i see! The remake of the korean movie “my sassy girl” dragon ball Z, Street Fighters and now Akira. Maybe next are Battle Royal remake and Naruto adaptation!

WTF is wrong with the production companies/ movie makin big wigs! They just can’t help but wreck everything in sight! I think that its ******* retarded that they are making a movie about this, they have no original ideas of their own anymore! Leo is not even fucken japanese! This is soooooo wrong! Ppl of the world should unite and stop going to the movies so that the can all go bankrupt! Support indie films cause at least they are original and think up their own story lines!
Totally agree. It’s a kind of cultural imperialism and in the end what sticks is the simplified image of a culture that is so much more diverse. Nothing against Leo, he’s a great actor, but Hollywood seems to butcher everything marketable and turns it into a pseudo original.

Actually #19, Ben Kingsley is half Indian so his portrayal of Gandhi was rightly chosen. I’m glad Leo is doing this. It’s completely different from his other films.
