What Stuff Do White People Like?

What Stuff Do White People Like?

The new satirical website StuffWhitePeopleLike.com is brilliant!

The very snarky and amusing blog acerbically profiles the status-climbing strategies of white people. If you still don’t get what the blog is about, maybe its ‘About Me’ description will help: “This is a scientific approach to highlight and explain stuff white people like. They are pretty predictable.”

Here, take some examples:

#69 Mos Def — “He is everything that white people dream about: authentic (”he’s from Brooklyn!”), funny (”he was on Chapelle show!”), artistic (have you heard “Black on Both Sides?”), an actor (”he’s in the new Gondry film!”) and not white (”I don’t see race”).
#43 Plays — “In spite of plays having minimal sets, no special effects, an intermission, and a higher admission price, white people believe that live theater is essential to any cultured city.”
#42 Sushi — “Regardless if you are vegetarian, vegan, or just guilty about eating meat, all white people love Sushi. To them, it’s everything they want: foreign culture, expensive, healthy, and hated by the ‘uneducated.’”
#8 Barack Obama — “Because white people are afraid that if they don’t like him that they will be called racist.”
#7 Diversity — “White people love ethnic diversity, but only as it relates to restaurants.”

wow, I love hose some racism is broad casted for the whole wide web to see. I don’t find it funny at all.

I am white and find this very offensive. But I think it would be offensive regardless of what race is put in the title. But it’s okay to make fun of white people in today’s world. It’s more of a fad actually, you’re not cool if you don’t make fun of white people.

I wonder if it was another ethnicity besides white if their would be a big outrage about racism on the internet.

    Nice Jared, nice.

  • Debbie

It is also too general blah blah – I hate Sushi, I would rather go to a movie then a play anyday, I don’t like any of the people running for President and I could not tell you who Mos Def is if you ask me.

  • zanessa110

im white, and yeah this is offensive. not all people like the same things. why is it that white people are always called bitches, sluts, or whores. everyone thinks that white people think their better than anyone else. and were not!

  • Brainysmurf

I think it’s a funny blog, but I didn’t get to read the whole thing. It kind of reminds me of The Official Preppy Handbook.

  • Jayne

Actually some of that stuff is pretty funny. It’s meant to be a joke people. Apparently, white people lack a sense of humor also LOL. I’m just kidding. The thing is, if it was about a person of color people would be laughing.

Now you see how it feels to be stereotyped. It doesn’t feel good now does it? Lighten up

  • layton

jayne, white people are stereotyped all the time geez

  • sheryl

    Let’s see…where to begin…

I am a white, educated professional and:
I do not know who Mos Def is.
    I love plays.
    I hate sushi.
Never even considered Obama’s “black” ancestry until somebody (well, the media) told me to.
I’m probably as diverse within my culture as any other person is within theirs. Why is it that only “whites” are called on to be diverse, while it’s okay and even encouraged for other cultures to maintain theirs?

I find this kind of thing very petty and tiresome…as you can see, their “profiling” of me pretty much failed.

  • !!!!!!!!!!!

    ………………….ONLY THE WHITE AMERICANS…………..

  • Hector

Being stereotyped sucks now doesn’t it? Now you get to see what latinos, blacks, indians, asians etc have to go through. I mean you see it and hear about it, but you’re never on the receiving end of it so you don’t know how it feels. Well now you do.

  • tash

    I’m white too…

but I think it is hilarious! I wish I had thought of it. Seriously people, it’s genius. Satire at its finest.

  • sam

I am white and I just find this amusing. But if other races can get so deffensive when a joke is made about them that is stereotypical, then so can us white people so I understand the people that come on here and are offended.

Personally, I think it;’s funny and am taking it lightly. Good post JJ! Haha.

  • Debbie

Just went on the site with 3 coworkers (two Asian and one African American.) The four of us each counted the number of posts on this site that would be true for ourselves. I scored 17(yes I am white), my coworkers scored 36, 38, and 42. It may be a joke but is so off on the individual aspect that each person is unique that it becomes boring (coworkers words not mine).

  • Debbie

PS – my coworkers told me who Mos Def is.

  • Gina

Chill white people damn. It’s not that serious, blacks deal with this crap everyday. if you need some tips on how to handle this. Just let me know, I have years of experience

  • Sara

    I’m white and I think it’s funny.

  • kat

i’ve seen this stuff done with asians/ hispanics and blacks except it usually goes around through e-mail/ spam. for example ” you know your asian if you…..” i’ve gotten it before and i think it’s hilarious when you can relate to what’s on the list. but i’ve never seen a whole blog about it. whatever LOL

  • becca

lol im white and i think its pretty funny execpt some things dont match me!

  • silvia

i think is funny, i dont think thats racist, an im white and european,

  • pretty anyway

i agree with my girl, jayne! the sad thing is that yes, there are stereotypes,(we are all guilty for acquiescing), but ALL cultures get stereotyped. it can either be funny or hurtful – sometimes it’s funny because it’s just plain TRUE! we have to learn to laugh with people, not just at them, though most of all at OURSELVES. it’s when you’re guilty of something that you’re most offended by it. the same people that are shouting “i’m not racist-this offends me!” are the same folks that show their “true colors” behind closed doors, or when they get mad. and all you road-ragers know EXACTLY what i’m talking about!

  • tash

    Debbie:
I can’t believe that you actually went on the site to count how many posts apply to you and your friends. You have completely missed the point of it – it’s SATIRICAL – not to be taken as a literal truth. The blog is actually MAKING FUN of racial stereotyping in a very clever way. Come on!!

    Gina:
    lol!

  • http://www.yahoo.com insulted

No one would be lauging if this were aimed at another race. Being white doesn’t make you predictable, and it sure as heck doesn’t make you like sushi (I’d rather eat broken glass).

To say a white person would back Barack Obama because they don’t want to be thought of as racist is insulting to him as us. Could we, possibly, maybe, perhaps, appreciate what the man stands for and against?

I’m really surprised you posted such a glowing post about something that’s nothing but insulting. I never would have expected that of you.

  • andtheycallmecrazy

    Wow I’m so white! LOL

  • jmo

    I like it

Yes we all knew it was satirical thats why we went on as a joke. only one of us thought that is was kind of offensive and that was not me. I was laughing the whole time especially the ones that really offended my Asian coworker. I guess you can say that YOU missed the whole point on and that was to have fun.

  • oo

i don’t think its that serious, it’s just so happens it’s posted on a blog. i’m sure there are plenty of these floating around the internet about other ethnicities. chill

  • Scarlett

This is absolutely offensive. If someone made a website called stuffblackpeoplelike, or stuffasianslike, it would be immediately bashed. Why is always cool to make fun of white people?

  • maddyboy

    I think all those things apply to me…and I’m latino. : )

It is a satire on stereotypes. Carlos Mencia pokes fun at latinos all the time and I think it is funny.

  • lu

see, and now it’s starting an argument. Now white people don’t know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of racism. Well, SOME OF US DO, thank you very much!

This is why this should not have been posted. Because it is starting an argument about race and who has it worse.

I am not a racist person, not even close but I still take offense to it.

The only thing that really bothers me (no offense to anyone) but if it were Asian, Hispanic, Middle-eastern, or black culture being made fun of on that website we’d have a big problem our hands. And if Jared posted it on a thread he would be getting screamed at and being called a racist. I think regardless of what race is in that headline, it’s wrong.

  • Kate

I am white and thought it was funny. It reminds me of every wealthy, white liberal democrat I know. Of course, I am from the South and am used to being stereotyped and insulted by people from the US and Europe.

  • sal

Carlos Mencia is an asshole! I don’t find him funny at all.

*and no, it’s not because he is Latino*

  • jason

oh, shut the fuck up. the site is hilarious.

  • Debbie

I am actually glad that this was posted – my coworkers and I have been discussing sterotyping while we listen to Mos Def on one of our computers. It has be a great conversation that got me to see things from their point of view.

  • h

I think it’s funny… it’s a good thing to be able to poke fun at yourself.

  • xslickx

god for bid if a white person did this about black culture. hate sushi, hate fish…why mos def? and barack obama, i dont care what flipping colour u are just so long as u carry the country well… and if this was about another colour, people would be in up roar about it being racist, and prob take down the site, this is pretty pointless

  • Didi

what a racist bunch of motherf*ckers. if it was the other way around, there’d be hell on

  • Emily

well I found it funny… I’m latina and some of those thing also apply to me!! so you just don’t have to take it very seriously… I recieved an e-mail a couple days ago that was similar to that blog except that it was about people from latin america and a though it was funny too!! The thing is I don’t think that the people who writes this kind of things are racist or anything!!

  • McLovin

I’m white and I think it’s hilarious! It helps to have a sense of humor.

  • anonymous

It’s amazing how reverse racism is SO under the radar in this awful, backwards, ridiculous country. It’s OK for people to talk shit about white people, but the second someone makes a black comment, sound the alarms it’s a racist remark!!!! I’M SO SICK OF IT!!! Instead of achieving equality, the country has worked toward making the white person a target to appease the African American community- talk about not making progress. I sincerely hope the person who created that blog IS white with a sense of humor, because if they’re black then they are just encouraging everything the intelligent people of their race are working against.

  • DAZ

Totally brill! An entire website about Gwyneth Paltrow, without having to read her name or see her pic once.

  • jessicaMISERALBAhasFLEES

@ #11, whites are called on to be diverse because you already went to other people’s countries and drowned them in your culture..

I know it is hard for oyu to grasp.. just try travelling and mabe getting to know non white people..

And as for the site, it is a satire.. open your dictionary!!

  • please

hilarious! for those who are truly offended, just take it lightly ‘coz i can’t even count the number of hateful comments when there’s a thread on someone who’s non-white. so true with the sushi though, haha, all these vapid white girls ordering sushi and all they can really eat are california rolls.

  • jessicaMISERALBAhasFLEES

Remember when Dave Chappelle made the N*gger skit??? He reversed the roles. Well this is reversing the stereotypes..

I can’t believe that in 2008, you have to actually explain this to people..

  • PJ

I’m white. I don’t like Barack Obama and am not voting for him. I don’t care if someone calls me racist over it.

All in all it was kinda funny.

  • ekaterina

Offensive. This site would have already been taken down if it was about any other ethnicity. Stereotyping is plain wrong and this may not be the forum for it, but if we really want to fight racism, we need to realize that it exists in all ethnicities. And I’m sorry, but the whole “well white people, if you need help dealing with it, I deal with it everyday…” crap is also offensive. Making assumptions about someone just because of the color of their skin is plain wrong and NO not all white people are racist, just like I assume all black people aren’t either…
JustJared, you should be ashamed of yourself for posting this…

  • http://www.bonbonsinthebath.com/ Christina H.

Oh, I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard in ages! Thanks Jared. :)

  • Heywood jablomie

How about we make a blog called “What black people like” and put in an entry for Fried Chicken and Watermelon?

Not so funny any more, eh?
