Elton John: Here are the Billy Elliot Boys!

Elton John: Here are the Billy Elliot Boys!

Elton John introduces the three young boys who will alternate in the lead of Billy Elliot: The Musical at the press event held at the Professional Performing Arts High School in New York City on Tuesday. (The musical is based on the 2000 film of the same name. The music for the musical was composed by Elton.)

Pictured left to right: Trent Kowalik, David Alvarez, and Kiril Kulish.

Trent is probably one of the most genius tap dancers we’ve ever come across, so he’s had to learn ballet,” says Mr. Daldry, who directed the movie. “David and Kiril are exceptional ballet dancers; these are probably the best kids in the world right now, but they’ve had to learn tap.”

According to the New York Times, the show changes depending on the boy: the choreography is different, and some of the music varies. Dang it! That just means I need to see this show three times!!!

Billy Elliot: The Musical opens officially at the Imperial Theater on October 1. For additional coverage of the boys of Billy Elliot, check out NYTimes.com.

I saw Trent perform in the London version and I was worried he would keep slipping into an american accent but he did very well, and of course the dancing was outstanding.
The music and dancing is the same for all the boys, whatever their background they go to ‘Billy School’…basically they live and together and train for months before they get on the stage. They don’t adapt the musical for each boy. There’s a continuous cycle of Billys on stage, in training and being auditioned so they can’t afford to put on 3 different performances!

    “A person like Elton John….”

    “Where are the parents…?”

Jesus. Since when is Elton John a pedophile? And is that old “all gay men are child molestors” thing still around?

    Grow up, people. You’re disgusting.

  • ewww

hes going to turn those boys into fags……..where r there parents??

  • Oh my Lord

I was thinking the same thing fKathy!!! Boy #3 Kiril looks sooo Sweet!

I’ve seen the show a couple of times in London. They change the music in several of the numbers based on strengths of the person playing Billy. The story, however, remains the same.

For example, there’s a scene called the Angry Dance. Some kids will do a lot of hop-hop dancing, others will do more tap or gymnastics. The song performed at the press show was called Electricity, and again, they will change the music to fit the dance style of the person playing the lead. Some kids are better at ballet, others at hip-hop; you get the point.

The other challenge is that the different boys have different ranges, and those ranges are always moving down. I met one of the musical directors in London and he explained that they have arrangements of the songs sung by Billy in different keys to accommodate the different boys and their changing voices.

In the London show, fourteen different boys (including four from the US) have performed the role of Billy. The reports from the boys and their families are that the entire production staff, and especially Elton John and the director, Stephen Daldry, have been incredibly supportive of the different actors and their families. They’ve worked out a system for training the younger boys so that they have the stamina to handle a 3 hour show, and worked out another system for how to help them get back to their regular lives once they outgrow the role.
