'So You Think You Can Dance' Premieres Tonight!

Tune into the two-hour season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance TONIGHT, May 22 @ 8PM ET/PT on FOX as the best and the worst showcase their spins, lifts and stunts. The gorgeous Cat Deeley will be returning as host!

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe was recently asked by EW what his criteria for putting together the top 20 dancers. He said, “I don’t always pick the best dancers. It is casting. It is saying, ‘Okay, this personality is going to jar against this personality.’ I want to keep it as interesting as possible. I’d like to diversify styles as much as possible. I want to have people that we can push and not have them break down the minute they can’t do something. It’s a long season for dancers. It isn’t like American Idol. If you lose your voice, you lose your voice one week. If you twist an ankle or put your knee out, that’s it, the season’s over for you. So they’ve got to be sturdy, both physically and mentally.”

And while we’re still on the topic of dance, America’s Best Dance Crew will return on Thursday, June 19 @ 10PM ET/PT on MTV. Host Mario Lopez and judges JC Chasez (N*Sync), rapper Lil Mama and choreographer Shane Sparks (You Got Served) will all return to MTV to critique each dance crew.

Viewers will get a front row seat as the top 10 dance crews are selected during MTV’s Live Casting Special on Saturday, June 7 @ 2PM ET/PT. Fans can catch up with the first season winners, JabbaWockeeZ, immediately afterwards in Walk It Out with the JabbaWockeeZ and Shane Sparks.

#6, Dance shows are much better than singing shows like American Idol, The Singing Bee, and crap like that.

i’m sorry but this nigel dude is a bigot. his show doesn’t represent the AMERICAN dance community. last season hardly had any black or latino dancers in the top 20 and considering 90% of dance originated in these communities, that doesn’t make sense. also, the majority of his commentary is embarassingly uninformed and borderline homophobic.

right now these ‘talent’ shows have too many idiotic, talent-less brits (who never had success in their careers) being allowed to invade, ridicule and judge the talented american population. it’s no longer entertaining

    Elaine Says:

In response to #12, you sound much more ignorant in your accusations than you claim Nigel is.

First of all, 90% of dance did not originate from black and latin communities. Dancing cannot be isolated to any one culture; it has been practiced for thousands of years across cultures and continents. I recommend you expose yourself to more styles and possibly pick up a history book.

Second of all, you seem to conveniently forget the non-Aryan contestants in last season’s top 20. e.g. Jimmy, Cedric, Danny, Jesus, Dominic, Ricky, Hok, and we can’t forget the winner: Sabra.

Third, Nigel is hardly a bigot. In fact, he makes a point of not critiquing works that he feels are others’ personal expressions and he is extremely tolerant of “out of the box” choreography and dancing. In addition, he is an extremely accurate judge of technique.

And finally, I would never insinuate that Nigel was unsuccessful in his own career. He was a choreographer and dancer for Young Generation in the UK for almost two decades.

Please don’t make claims without the information to back them up.
