Gerard Butler To Star in Phantom Sequel?

Gerard Butler To Star in Phantom Sequel?

Gerard Butler struts his sexy self down Robertson Boulevard after having lunch at the Newsroom Cafe in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon.

According to UK’s Daily Express, Gerard, 38, is to star in a stage version of the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera.

Andrew Lloyd Webber wants to bring Gerry to the London stage as the Phantom, a role he played in the 2004 film. He said, “I have got my own new show coming on next year, which is my sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, which I think is going to be called Phantom: Once Upon Another Time. But that will come on in November next year, if everything goes well.”

A source reveals,“Because it’s a sequel to a film which helped the career rise of Gerard, Lord Andrew believes he will do it. There could be another film down the line. There’s a massive audience out there who love the original, another is that he could run the casting for the West End show as a film, too.”

I loved POTO with the Butler. In fact it made me a huge fan of Gerard but I hope he won’t try to do this sequel either on the stage or as a film. Sequels mostly suck and Gerard has come to far to but a huge amount of energy into a genre that he doesn’t have the natural singing skills to truly great in. He should better work on drama, comedy, westerns, action, sci-fi, mysteries…not musicals.

I’m thinking ALW is getting burned out if all he can come up with is a sequel to his masterpiece. It can only detract from POTO in the long run.

He’s ok, I really don’t get why women go crazy over him. He seems like an a*s and kinda full of himself, plus he could use a razor and usually dresses like a drunk. Other then that tho, he’s ok. I actually think he looks nice here and the pics of him eating well, I can do without them. I don’t know why paps stalk people.

Maybe he can Hire Miranda Kerr in this movie since he likes her so much, but if she tries acting she would suck, no one wants to hear her anyoing Australian accent squelling the whole way through a movie.

I think he looks great, and he should go for it if he wants to, he has great talent and can make anything work. I do question some of the guys around him in some of those pictures though, the guy with the sandals that appear to have sequins on them and the guy in the purple shirt, I hope these are not super close friends of his, considering how lots of people think Gerard is gay. he has said he isn’t and those guys look a little strange.

He acts bother but why would he go for lunch on Robertson if he wanted privacy? I’ve eaten at most of the places these people go and they’re not that good that if you’re a celeb you have to have their food. There are plenty of other options with way better food on less crowded, pap filled streets.

#19 I’m pretty sure #13 had to look, seeing it’s a slow day on here. There’s not much else to see.

    PLEASE NO Says:

If you are a true POTO fan then you hated the movie because GB was Erik. If you have ever seen some of the great Phantom’s on stage – Michael Crawford, Davis Gaines, JOJ, there is no way you could think GB did that part justice. I can perhaps understand if you haven’t seen anyone decent on stage but Butler just doesn’t compare to the magic the gifted performers bring to the role on stage. How can Andrew cast someone who can’t sing in the stage version? GB talked most of the lyrics to the songs because he couldn’t hit those tenor notes. ALW owes it to his Phans to actually cast someone w/ talent to be in the seuqal. The movie was critically & at the box office a disaster. Does ALW want the sequal to be a disaster too? If so he should cast GB. The only one from the movie that could play in the stage version of POTO is Patrick Wilson. Even Emmy who has a good voice could never perform the role of Christine night after night. Her voice just isn’t strong enough. I used to really love ALW but i am so over him if he casts GB in the sequal.

  22. 22
    Jennifer Says:

    #21,

there’s something called personal taste. I happen to have seen a number of great stage phantoms, and I still love the 2004 movie. it’s a different take on it. less classical singing, more rock music-y, some Leroux references and some rearrangements (such as the crashing of the chandelier) to make the transition from stage to film. okay, so the ‘sunburn’ was a bit of a joke, but aside from that… if the movie is not your cup of tea, then that’s perfectly fine. but to say Gerard can’t sing is an immature and personal insult, and just not true. he sings DIFFERENTLY because he’s very obviously not classically trained, but he CAN sing. I personally don’t like Michael Crawford’s voice too much because I find it too high and not masculine enough, but I do acknowledge he is a fantastic singer. Same goes for Sarah Brightman, btw. But somehow Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman fans can’t seem to make that sort of concession to Butler and Rossum. People also often forget that Crawford and Brightman had years and years of training when they played the roles. Considering that Butler and Rossum only had a few months, I reckon they did a terrific job.

Also if you look up the definition of disaster, you’ll find you’re wrong. go to box office mojo and search for Phantom of the Opera. the production budget was $70 million, and it grossed a total of $155 million. that’s hardly a financial disaster, is it? and the reviews were mixed, not bad.

  23. 23
    annatye Says:

Gerard Butler was simply dreadful as the phantom. I can see what they were looking for when they cast him, but I am very sure they had better expectations of him. He just wasn’t up to it in practice. And it is ridiculous to suggest that it is reasonable to need to make excuses.

And the suggestion that he could possibly play the phantom on stage is nonsense! And that has nothing to do with personal taste. To sing 8 performances a week is a completely different issue to singing on occasion. It isn’t just about being able to sing it (which he has already demonstrated he can’t anyway), it is about being able to continue to sing it and about being able to do so without destroying the voice in the process.

  24. 24
    nikkita Says:

No not a sequel. I´m probably one of the few who hated the film.
btw, I wish gerard would settle down, and that he doesn´t in to full time bachelor like clooney.

    Butler Can't Sing Says:

The singing in the movie version of POTO was recorded. Even w/ the help of modern technology Butler couldn’t sing. Did you ever see him go out & promote the movie by singing? That is right because he cannot sing. Even Emmy who I think is beautiful & has a beautiful voice struggled w/ singing the songs live when she was promoting the film. I would love to see Patrick playing Raoul but Christine & Erik need to be re-cast unless Emmy’s voice has matured. Yes Butler is good looking but Erik is supposed to be ugly so who really cares what he looks like. I agree w/ #23. Singing in a live production 8 shows a week is a grueling task. There is no way Butler can do it. Weber should have made the Phantom movie in the late 90′s & cast the original London cast in it. That cast was magic-they made POTO what it is.There have been a few good stage Phantoms but Steve Barton was the best Raoul ever.

  27. 27
    Cat Says:

Gerry is hot & that is why they cast him in the movie. The Phantom is supposed to be ugly & Gerry hardly wore any make-up which really upset a lot of people. He did receive praise for his acting in the movie but virtually all the reviews were critical of his singing because he didn’t have the range & spoke a lot of parts that should have been sung. The movie bombed in the US but did well overseas. ALW wanted to make the movie w/ Sarah & Michael & that is why Michael left the LA production. However, ALW was going through a divorce w/ Sarah so put it off & thus all the dramz about Butler. I would like to see Butler reprise the role on stage to see if he really can sing – then the debate will be settled. I don’t care who is cast – I am for sure seeing it!

    Tracy Says:

Bravo to you #22, well said, #23, it is obvious that you have no idea how much singing went into the movie, they had to sing all of thier parts every day whether they were filming that part or not , they were singing in the studio every day as well and I mean EVERY day, besides Gerry would do alot better in the sequel then the guy from New york that played the phantom when I went to see it on stage, he was NOT good at all, and made the phantom look ridiculous. #24 just because he’s not dating one certain person doesn’t mean he is not a person who is settled down. #26, as the matter of fact, he did sing parts of his songs at several interviews while promoting the movie, Don’t comment if you don’t know the facts.#27m you and a lot of people seem to have the mistaken idea that the POTO on film was suppose to be just like the stage version, ALW wanted it to be different. People should not be comparing the two versions, they were meant to be different. and the film didn’t bomb in the Us, if fact it did really well where I live, so you don’t know what you are talking about. #28, I don’t think he will either, because he’s involved with other things now. oh and for anyone out there who isn’t aware of this Emmy, was trained in opera when she was younger before she became an actress.

    rolling eyes Says:

what does it matter no way in hell is Gerard going to do this…he’s a film star now doing tons of movies.

he wasn’t even interviewed in the article it’s just ALW talking his ear off about wanting Gerard. just because he wants Gerry doesn’t mean he’s going to get him

and also Gerard is so gorgeous. :D

Great news. A friend of mine who is currently in a west end musical has said that there has been news of people auditioning for the sequal.

So great to hear he is not linked to the cougar Diaz. Actually the comments he made about her being a dog was very funny but coming from him very serious. Anyway since that comment she has been linked to three other men. It must be her age 35 I think not she is at a time in her life 40′s needing to find a man quick. The make up removed reveals her real age. If only my friends in the industry would reveal her photos and her real age. I suppose they have to play nice.

Go Gerard reach for the stars. See you at the auditions.

HE Cannot sing at all Says:

GB has completely failed as the Phantom – he cannot sing at all. His Music of the Night is just flat. This man can be handsome (there is no doubt he is), but not as the Phantom (for Gods sake). The Phantom has got a great spirit and is full of passion – and this is just what Gerard Butler completely lacks. I truly apologize to all his fans.

    ROB Says:

Phantom of the Opera is that good, that I’d advise on going to see everything else first, because once you’ve seen PotO the rest aren’t as enjoyable.

I don’t know how they’d top the first but with more and more people having seen the first, over the years, it may have a greater public interest. I would want the cast that was, if needed, back. For the first film to be in proportion, and popular to those who hadn’t seen the stage show, I thought they were damn lucky to get the people they had.

  71. 71
    Truthbetold Says:

Gerard Butler can’t sing. Anyone encouraging this fool to sing even more than the damage he has already inflicted upon Phantom is doing a disservice to the art of music. They should have dubbed Butler’s cracking, hair-raising, and grating voice with Michael Crawford’s flawless singing. And if anyone persists in promoting Butler, have Butler create his own album and see how well it sells. BWAHAHHAHAHAHA!

  72. 72
    Zina Says:

I would like to see him again in the POTO, live in the stage, in the movie he was great , i like the way he was singing, very sexy.

    Awosme! Says:

if they had Michael Crawford and Emmy Rossum star in the sequal, Life would be perferct! GB was okay…. his style of sininging was “okay”.. but if Michale Crawford and Emmy R. do it… I would so go see it!

  74. 74
    Mellissa Says:

Please, please say it ain’t so. Fine, Gerard Butler is a good actor, but a singer he is not. I love Phantom, I’ve seen the stage production 12 times (all but once before the movie came out). I’ve loved every Phantom, some more than others. But, seriously folks, listen to Micheal Crawford sing Music of the Night, listen to David Gaines, Colm Wilkenson, Franc D’Ambrosio, and Gerard Butler, and tell me if Gerry’s version is even in the same realm as the others. It’s not. It’s the only thing about the movie that I did not like. There are plenty of good looking singer/actors who can play the part. I agree with 73, Crawford and Rossum would be great, but I doubt Crawford, at age 67, would be willing to do it.

  75. 75
    Not so sure Says:

I don’t think he’s actually even playing the part.

From what I’ve heard, they already chose the cast as Ramin Karimloo for the Phantom and Sierra Boggess as Christine.

Personally, I think Butler is a great actor, but he can’t sing nearly as well as anyone in the live musical. He’s not horrible, he’s just not amazing. =]
