Orlando Bloom Hits Sarajevo Film Festival

Pirates of the Caribbean star Orlando Bloom announces his stepping aside from big movie productions to work in a film about life in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo during the 1992-95 siege at a meeting on Tuesday in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The film is based on the book Fools Rush In by American writer and filmmaker Bill Carter who lived in Sarajevo at the height of the siege. It will be directed by Brazilian director Andrucha Waddington.

“A film is a very specific and personal account of Bill Carter‘s experience in Sarajevo during the war and we would very much like to make the film here,” the 31-year-old actor said. “This is a departure from the very big Hollywood productions. I’m not in fact playing Bill in this movie but I read the script and the very human story at the very core of this film spoke to me very clearly.”

  • Mika

Lets hope they hire ACTUAL BOSNIANS, SERBS & CROATS for this Im sure to be masterpiece, instead of a couple of desperate for work russian & polish actors with bad slavic accents. Oh who am I kidding? everyone will be some crappy American “A” lister who will emote & grimace waaaay too much. Hayden Pantyairs as a traumitized bosnian refugee & Tom cruise as an “evil” nazi Serb, why not? Goddamn…

  • kill

  • Jessica

“Welcome to Sarajevo” was amazing, so I’m looking forward to this movie. It’s something that people need to be aware of. If we don’t know this world’s history, we’re bound to repeat it. Over and over and over.

  • @8

Many of the articles about his trip have mentioned their desire to hire local actors. Most specifically those who went through the war themselves.
    This is a wonderful project.
If you can be proud of a total stranger, I’m proud of HIM.

  • Finally

Finally a film, and im so glad no big epic ones either. He needs to do other things. He looks happier and clean too.

  • Sara

I wish he and Jen would get together, please-please.
I think they would be so cute and perfect together.

It’s so refreshing to see a young Hollywood star use his celebrity and clout to get a small, important film like this made. If he’s a producer, that means that he is investing his own money in this film. Doing something socially relevant with his millions, instead of blowing it on booze and drugs. Hollywood might want to deport him for setting a bad example for the Lohans of the world.

Altruistic and incredibly hot, what a great combination.

  • caroline

He’s looking very clean cut and sleek these days!

  • justice

god is he handsom either with long hair or short hair!!!!

  • wICKED WENCH

  • love

    What a guy.
Beautiful, inside and out. Instead of selling out to Hollywood, he wants to make meaningful films.

Plus: MY GOODNESS HE LOOKS HOT!

  • Karmakey

It sounds like a wonderful, meaningful project. I’m so excited he is doing this. It is good to see him working again especially in a film of this nature. Love him.

  • Sienna

He still gets hired for a role??? Seriously? That’s surprising.

  • Dee

I live in Sarajevo and I’m really hoping that I’ll see him on SFF :) , although it’s amazing that a big hollywood star is interested in making film about war in Bosnia what annoys me that every fuckin’ movie that is about B a H is about war…

  • Julie

This sounds like a really worthwhile project. I’m so glad that Orlando is associated with it!

  • http://justjared hot

wow he looks fantastic love him can’t wait for the movie

  • iguana

Mika-good point. We have better actors that are more fit for this type of movie. Western actors cannot do the justice in such movies. It’s much easier to make an act realistic if you have lived in that part of the world and got first hand experience, it’s like getting hypnotised and reliving your past.

  • sabs

i am bosnian but currently live in australia and visit bosnia every 6 months and am acutally suprised that an internationally recognised actor who is used to big budget films is interested in this sort of project. maybe it will give him even more recognition and publicity? who knows but i am pretty excited and cant wait for it to be released because the book is amazing but i hope local actors will be used in the film because it would be a wonderful oppurtunity and make it seem more realistic as opposed to those fake accents. but why does every movie about bosnia have to be related to the war. the country has so much more to offer !

  • http://justjared orlando fan

im happy he is doing this film love him

  • bya

    Good luck, Orlando!!!

  • Andrea

omggg.. i was born in SArajevo :))))
    yayayay
finally some1 making a movie of the terrible things that happened and how the bad things really were with serbs, croats and muslims… this is a movie for americans to really see.. and stop throwing wars… that goes for you Bush!

  • Eyda

agree with dee:) still so happy hes here:))

  • ducati

Orlando looks great…….relax, happy and seems to have his career in mind. This is what I was waiting on. A movie, and the confirmation is directly out of his mouth. Cann’t wait to see this movie, it sounds great and worth my $15.

  • Jennifer

hmmmmmmmmm…………..finally .!!!!!!!!!! more movies with orly in them. that’s good. and it’s not a big make millions of dollars movie. it’s a simple movie about bosnia and the war. good. good to see him in one more movie. orly u don’t look yourself. still love u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I’mwatchingyou

Good for you Orlando! Good Luck and God Bless your truly beautiful heart!
p.s. I just LOVE your new look!!!!!!!

  • Slav@heart

Im so happy! I love the southern slavic countries, me speaking a few slavic languages hopefully they will have their people in the movie. I hate when movies get American actors and have them create phony slavic accents and speak the language with an american accent.

  • Goody

According to the news, they plan on using as many local actors as they can.

This sounds like an amazing project. He’s using his fame to make important films, not just junk. I love him for that.

  • Dave

    WOW this movie sounds awful!!

  • @44

Why, because it doesn’t have Batman in it?
Because it won’t be layedred with CGI graphics?
Because it will be a thought provoking movie and you prefer not to have to think?
Because it will focus on innocent people trying to survive for one more day while snipers take pot shots at women and children and you like to think that life is all puppies and kittens?
Because the dialog will consist of multisyllabic words?
    Why?

  • Variety

Variety is reporting that Javier Bardem is in talks to play a part in this movie.
    It’s looking better and better!

  • @45

Because “Mr Box Office Poison” is in it

  • jujubee

    @47

TON CRUISE is gonna be in it too?????

  • curious

I am just curious as to why many people on this site are so negative about Orlando and Miranda Kerr. Can someone explain? I have no opinion one way or the other but I have read so much hate directed at them and want to know why that is. Did they do something awful I am unaware of? He seems alright to me and I really know nothing about her.

And didn’t everyone say that Orlando and Kate B’s relationship was a fake when it was happening and now this one is but with Kate it was real???

  • uh huh

    @49

Well if you’ve read all the hate, then you know what it it’s all about. Don’t play dumb with us, ok? We’re not even talking about her here.
