Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter -- First Picture?

Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter -- First Picture?

Here is your first look at Johnny Depp as Alice in Wonderland‘s The Mad Hatter.

Or is it? A Photoshop creation, perhaps?

In any event, the 3D flick will use a mix of live action and performance capture CGI. It will be directed by Tim Burton, who first teamed up with Depp for the 1990’s film Edward Scissorhands.

Depp will appear alongside Anne Hathaway as The White Queen and Burton‘s wife, Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen. Also featured: Michael Sheen, Mia Wasikowska, Matt Lucas, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman.

I like Johnny.. I find him really weird.. not sexy really just unusual. I don’t like the Tim B stuff. It all looks dated. Everything looks like Edward Scissor-hands. All you have to do is switch characters. I am also angry that they always have to take a children’s classic and make it into an adult drama. It never works… Cat in the Hat.. Sleepy hollow, Just leave the kiddie stuff alone. What happened to writing an original script. Hummmmmm. Just wondering.

Johnny is a good actor, I do wonder why people never critize him for not doing anything her in the US until he has a movie coming out?

To me, this looks like a creepier version of his “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” make-up.

I was hoping for a different look. Still looking forward to the movie though.

It’s hot…it reminds me of the New Romance movement fashion of the 80′s with a Victorian twist. Or a YOSHITAKA AMANO PAINTING. If this is a real representation of the Mad hatter character in the movie, I LOVE IT.

    anamalia :

95% of his movies? do you have any idea how many movies johnny has done., gotta be 35+..and 7 with burton.

Johnny has done a lot of diverse work: libertine, secret window, finding neverland, sweeney todd (which isn’t the same as jack sparrow, despite both being british) and public enemies which is still in post-preduction, but these characters are nothing alike and have all been done within 5 years. not to mention all the other stuff he has done in the past!

you may not like him, but you have to admit he does take chances with different characters…how often does brad pitt, george clooney, tom cruise or will smith look different?

  28. 28
    sharon Says:

You know there is alot of actors who stick with what character or personality they have and Johnny Depp has been doing a good damn job at what he is doing i guess you just have to undrestand his types of characters weither creepy or not he is just cool and sexy in my book.

  29. 29
    tom Says:

The only roles Depp can play are these strange looney characters. I don’t find his acting to be great– just all the same strangeness.

  30. 30
    sharon Says:

@ 28 you are so right i just recently watched fear and loathing in vegas and it was hilorous his character in that movie made me think of capt jack sparrow.

  31. 31
    hannah Says:

I’m guessing you don’t stray far from blockbusters then do you…
    also, again :

    what about finding neverland?
    what about secret window?
    what about the libertine?

And although i haven’t seen it, his role in public enemies doesn’t seem all that ‘strange and looney”

also, i don’t go to movies to watch normal people, i can do that anywhere, movies are made for us to stretch the bounds of reality.

  32. 32
    hannah Says:

31- have you seen ed wood? its hilarious!

  35. 35
    Yarydepp Says:

I love Johnny I he gorgeous. I respect when people said that they dont find him hot, but never say that hes not a good actor, everybody know that he is the best actor thats why he is cast for this weird stuff but sit down and watch all his work before and then talk.

Who is going to play Alice???

  37. 37
    vmars111 Says:

Why must Tim Burton terrify the kiddies with another one of his take of a children classic?

No child should deserve this punishment! And you people who live off of Burton films other than Batman need to wear more colors other than black!

Wasn’t it bad enough with Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka looking like a pedophile rapist? Or that freaky Oompa Loompa who looked almost cannibalistic…

I kind of agree with you, at least his films lately and his Edward Scissorhands from the 90s. I do like some of his earlier work but it seems now he wants to hide behind makeup for some reason, and I don’t really find him all that diverse anymore. He’s just bein’ all Tim Burton-ish.

Bit surprised about Anne Hathaway though.

    Claudia Says:

I’m amazed that everybody thinks that he only plays ‘looney and creepy’ characters. Not true at all. Everybody looks at all this mainstream stuff. Watch some of his old movies, nothing like that at all. And Sweeney Todd was way different, he sang? Just because Tim Burton has a style doesn’t mean that everything is the same, don’t look at the texture of the movie; watch the movie and pay attention to the acting and the way characters are portrayed.

Also, everybody saying he hides behind the make-up. The only movies he’s made with make up are usually his Burton films. There are movies like, Nick of Time, The Libertine (which he does wear a lot of make-up but not in the same way as he would as Todd or the Hatter), Secret Window and many others. Do your research.

I hope this is fake, but it seems to be real… I don’t think it’s photoshop.

(But remember, they can show a false picture to the media, as they did with pirates of the caribbean, where jack sparrow is suited in a chinese costume.)

I hope this is not the real mad hatter, looks too creepy, it’s gonna be something like sweeney todd, and this has nothing to do with Alice in wonderland, should be more of a fun movie, not a dark like sweeney todd…

but, as far as I’m concerned, tim burton loves making movies like these movies. So, I think there’s no way, the movie will have a darker look anyways.

(why is mad hatter holding a bunny? I read the book 2 weeks ago, and besides the white rabbit, there’s no other, just the march hare. ?!?!?! would it be the march hare?)

  57. 57
    JAKE Says:

oooooooooobber excited 4 this movie. Just from this picture of this one character you can tell that it will be Tim Burton’s creepy, mysterious, and dark work at its very best.

  62. 62
    Ok Says:

I personally think this look is great. It is just as I’d expect and would hope to see in a Burton film.

As for ruining a Disney classic; not happening. Please recognize that Disney did not create Alice in Wonderland, and their adaptation of the story is far from accurate. So really, Alice in Wonderland is free game for anyone to create a film about – and it actually being a good film, for that matter.

  63. 63
    Colleen Says:

the film isnt called mad hatter! its alice in wonderland.

  64. 64
    Cyangirl Says:

Whatever u guys say.. Johnny Depp is one of the best actors of this times. he is very versatile and can play whatever role he portrays. What I like about him is that he never plays role exactly the same and he chooses his characters. He doesn’t want to be in th mainstream..

You guys who says that his characters are all the same, watch all his movies especially the movies from the past, when he was not very much known by a lot of people.

    try watching:
    What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,
    Nick Of Time,
    Ed Wood,
    Benny and Joon,
Once Upon a Time in Mexico,
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and a lot more…

He’s like Ewan McGregor at some point. they choose their roles intelligently.. hahaha!

  65. 65
    Aubri Lungs Says:

I think that people need to stop complaining about Tim Burton turning Kid stuff into adult stuff. First of all, at least 70% of his stuff originally was adult stuff! Sleepy Hollow, E. Scissorhands, EVEN Alice in Wonderland!!! I mean come on! Carrol wrote that for an adult woman! And Sleepy Hollow! Don’t even get me started! Originally the story was full of horrible things that parents would never in their right mind let their children read!!! It was edited and abridged many times before it became anything resembling children’s story!!! Also, Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is WAY closer to the book(notice the original book’s title compared to the movie made in the 70s or whatever)! Try knowing what you’re talking about before you say anything!

  66. 66
    Cinthia Says:

Alice in Wonderland is not a Disney movie walt disney decided to make a movie out of a BOOK! plus the disney version is very different than the book, just cause Tim Burton wants to make the movie doesn’t mean that is a “remake” he is just making a movie out of a book, and i’m pretty sure that is going to be a great movie, he’s got a great cast as usual.

  67. 67
    Cholo Says:

Even though I’m a boy…I think I’m gonna watch alice in wonderland
Note:Why does Johhny Depp still look like Sweeney Todd

  68. 68
    Jess Says:

It seems to me that a lot of people commenting here clearly haven’t read the original Alice in Wonderland and only know the child-friendly Disney version.

The book is very dark and of all the attempts so far, I feel that Tim Burton’s maybe the closest to the real feel of the book yet. If this is the final image of the mad hatter then I’m happy. As name suggests, the hatter is mad and surely his image should represent this?

  69. 69
    Victoria_Sweeneytodd5 Says:

wow! creepy but he is exy without all that stuff he looks sexy in sweeney todd… HELENA BONHAM CARTER AND ALAN RICKMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????? reuniting sweeney todd’s characters are we not? :) JOHNNY DEPP RULES!!!!!!!!

I don’t think Burton’s Alice in Wonderland will do well box office wise because it is likely to be released round about the same time as thefollowing movies:

This movie is going to be awesome. Tim Burton does amazing work, and this is such an amazing cast. Its going to be very dark and gloomy, which is going to make it even better. Johnny is one of my fav’s and Im sure he will do an awesome job as the Mad Hatter. Anyone who says otherwise, go watch some of the movies he’s in and your mind and oppinion will change.Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen is going to be wonderfully creepy and very dramatic. Cant wait till this movie comes out!!! First one in line.

    Steff Says:

Now iv read a lot of these comments and most of there are sayin johnny should be in more normal films, i strongly disagree iv heard johnny himself in interveiws saying he loves to express his creative and weird side… But basicly you can see a normal film anywhere and everywhere. And to find a creative director like tim and an actor that can pull off such wacky characters and still be loved, now thats what i call a movie. I love depp and burton in every way possable, i respect them alot…

excuse me mam, i have nothing but time and i watch alot of movies. Its apart of being away for a long time. Tim B is going to nail this movie, along with the original script. The guy is amazing and Depp is going to capture hatter the way it was ment to be. the movie was dark as are alot of other disney movies. Disney often throws adult humor into their “children” target movies.

  86. 86
    heavymetalmary Says:

…First off, Depp does own at least 1 home in Los Angeles… maybe he stays away from the US so much because he is not an attention-***** like most actors, and when not working lives in France where is can have a relatively “normal” life with his family…. If he was here in the US, he would be stalked non-stop by the paparazzi, his kids harassed, etc. I totally respect the way he stays away from here, except for business.
