David Cook Takes A Bite Out Of His Album

David Cook Takes A Bite Out Of His Album

American Idol champ David Cook takes a big bite out of his self-titled major-label debut album at Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square on Tuesday. His CD dropped in stores yesterday and should land in the top three during it’s first week in sales.

The 25-year-old signer/songwriter, who is dating fellow Idol alum Kimberly Caldwell, recently sat down with EW to talk about his music. Here’s a sampling:

Everyone will be making the comparison you’re sick of: Is he gonna have a [successful Chris] Daughtry-like career? Opinions and perceptions, man – I didn’t let it get to me on the show, and I see no reason to let it get to me afterward. I just think this record is me, and if people want to compare it to Daughtry, awesome. He’s sold a ton of records. I just hope someday the coin will flip and somebody will compare somebody else to me.

I love him and the album but I’d really prefer that all media attention for his music didn’t need to reference his unfortunate choice of companions. Focus on his TALENT and leave her out of it.

would it be wrong of me to tell him to stop eating the cd and ask him to eat me…?… just a thought :)

I am a Archie fan and I love Cook’s cd. But both Archie and Cooks cds are different genres. And Archie says he wants Cook’s cd to be successful.

David Cooks album is fantastic, I love every song on it. I do not understand how anyone can comment on this album and then compare it to David A.’s. They don’t make the same type of music at all, and they are both great guiys. Be fair in your reviews and stop trying to compare apples to oranges; it only hurts both Davids.

Who cares about Archuletta? This isnt about him. Love David Cook, Love his CD, he’s awesome!

  • jalyn

He is positively gorgeous…and just look at how ecstatic he was that night. No, the album is not perfect, but it’s damn good; I’d even call it great. I’ll definitely continue to buy his music. Plus, he’s the absolute greatest guy ever- did you hear that he bought donuts for all the fans that waited in the freezing cold all night outside of the Virgin Megastore to get a wristband to this event? He had them delivered early that morning. How can you NOT like a guy like that?

What Archuleta fans do is google David Cook in an effort to see where they can leave negative comments. They do this 24/7. They cannot accept that these two artists have their own genre and own audiences and that the competition is over. I love all the songs on David Cook’s album. It was something for everyone. There are rock songs, pop/rock, pop, power ballads. David Cook’s album did not disappoint me and what I loved when I watched A.I. is what I got from this album. He stayed true to himself. Archuleta’s album does not showcase what people liked about him during A.I. However, I agree with the reviewer’s assessment–his fans won’t care because Archuleta is bulletproof and walks on water.

Review by the Charlatan giving his album 1.5 stars:
“Oh Archie. Somehow he takes the bulletproof tween-pop formula – eyes squeezed shut with passion, earnest face, Fist of Emotion – to new levels of awkwardness. Granted, he has a gorgeous voice, but his self-titled album does little to showcase it. The disc’s mix of saccharine R&B ballads (think Chris Brown’s underdeveloped kid brother) and touches of Christian contemporary come together in a sticky mess of pop gone terribly wrong. There are a couple better-than-average songs. The album’s lead single, “Crush,” is a catchy little confection, and “Don’t Let Go,” co-written by N’Sync’s JC Chasez, lends the disc some much-needed edge. The album is indicative of what plagued Archuleta on Idol. While he technically has all the tools to be a huge star – the Voice, generic good looks, “aw shucks” charm – he’s still just a kid. And he’s a kid who does what he’s told. The album sounds like he was pulled in a bunch of different directions, and the strain shows. At his best, Archuleta can move grown women to tears with his pristine vocals. But when he deviates away from his signature trills, he ends up with the kind of uninspired dreck this album offers. But it’s OK. Archie’s Angels (as his fans call themselves) will love it regardless. They did, after all, stand behind his ill-advised Idol performance of “With You” (YouTube this, stat!).

Review of David Cook’s album, and they have it ranked as 4.5 stars:
“David Cook, the new face of ‘fly-over rock’? David Cook, Daughtry 2.0? Maybe, but how about, David Cook, nice guy makes good? Cook knows what works for him, and with the help of rock guru Rob Cavallo (Green Day) he delivers a solid album packed with the soaring vocals and smoldering angst that helped him capture the Idol crown. Arena-ready anthems and deeply personal lyrics make this record vintage Cook for those familiar with his indie work. Cook’s surprising range sees him growl and swagger through “Bar Ba Sol,” a good ol’ fashioned rock joint complete with extra crunchy guitar riffs, and lament the pain of keeping vigil by the bedside of an ailing loved one in “Permanent,” a heart-wrenching piano-driven ballad. His love-it-or-hate-it facial scruff and tendency to over-accessorize cannot hide the fact he has a great voice. Music snobs may scoff, but Cook’s album is a treat. It’s the album he’s been waiting to make heard for years. Prior to being catapulted to fame on Idol, he was a struggling musician/bartender who couldn’t give away copies of his indie record. Now that same record fetches thousands on eBay. Sure, he’s a little sentimental and admittedly, his songs are nothing groundbreaking, but they speak to who he is. Who can fault a guy for that?”

Bottom line: Cook’s songs are arena ready. He recorded all the songs in 2-3 takes. He wrote or co-wrote 10 of the 12 songs. Cook shines in live performances and knows how to get the crowd going and his live performances are better than the recorded version. They are never the same. It makes that interesting.

Archuleta will have diffculty engaging the audience in an arena. His songs sound better on the track that when he does live performances. He isn’t a natural on stage.

The big bucks are made doing concerts. That is what will make or break an artist in the end.

  • kristie

i couldn’t agree with you more, ronnie. i feel david cook has what it takes to be a star for years to come. his album ROCKS!!!! :)

  • Pat

Got Cook’s album on Friday, and listened to it over and over. Love everything about it, the music, the lyrics, the emotion. It totally satisfies. Before I bought it, I had heard “Light On” and loved it.

Wanting to know how Archie was doing as well, I YouTubed “Crush” to see how I liked that song. Very nice, but I lost interest halfway through it. Seems like music for “tweens”. Cook’s, on the other hand, is more adult rock. And therein lies the difference.

  • Pam

Did not like David Cook on American Idol – thought I’d give his CD a listen to, and NOPE..don’t like it. I guess I just don’t like him and nothing is going to change my opinion.

  • Denise

I really love David’s CD and I listen to it a lot. I got to see David in concert last week and he’s even better live. The concert was amazing and I can’t wait to see him again.
