Hugh Jackman To Host Oscars

Sexiest Man Alive Hugh Jackman will host the 81st annual Academy Awards ceremony from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on Feb. 22.

Producer Laurence Mark and Executive Producer Bill Condon announced in a joint statement, “Hugh Jackman is a consummate entertainer and an internationally renowned movie star. He also has style, elegance and a sense of occasion. Hugh is the ideal choice to host a celebration of the year’s movies – and to have fun doing it.”

Hugh, 40, won an Emmy in 2005 for hosting the 2004′s Tony Awards. He also took the Broadway stage in The Boy from Oz in 2003.

Let’s hope the opening is a fantastical musical number!

UPDATE: Australia star Hugh Jackman responds in a statement, “Thirty years ago when I was in Sydney watching Johnny Carson host the Oscars with my family, I never imagined that I’d one day have the chance to be up on that stage myself! I am very grateful to the Academy for giving me this opportunity. And, excited to be working with Larry and Bill on what I know will be a fun and memorable celebration.”

Awesome! He was fantastic hosting the Tonys and I thought it was such a shame that the audience was so small for the telecast-now with the Oscars he will get a worldwide stage. Besides being incredibly gorgeous in a Tux (the scene in Australia will stop your heart) he is incredibly talented and funny. I hope that this means he will sing and dance too.
I am glad to see that his Sexiest Man title has earned him well deserved visibility, I just hope that someday he will also be recognized for his talent as well. And as has often been said, he is the nicest, sweetest guy in Hollywood, now all he needs is the role that will earn him an Oscar of his own.

OK, when will they bring Billy Crystal back? It’s getting ridiculous! He is the one and only Oscar host.

Hugh is cool. I hope he succeeds because he seems like a good guy.

surprise choice BUT one, he looks GREAT in a tux and two, he did such a good job at the Tonys a couple of years back so hopefully he will be just as good at the oscars!!!! huge hugh fan!

  • hello

Really? Is he funny enough? Only funny people should host events that require a lot of talking because if not, then the shindig is just lame.

This is a great call! There’s finally hope that the oscars will be FUN. Hugh Jackman is a great performer with great personality, I’m definitely watching this time!

I think he’s a great choice. Now, I hope they will let be and not try to produce a comedy/variety show. Why can’t the “Academy” have some class for a change. They try to make the hosts act like clowns and they add all these shiteous musical revue acts. I like to watch the BAFTAS because they are witty and funny and classy…and they don’t last more then two hours. Hug is a good start. The problem is with the producers. They really make a huge mess, then the host gets the blame.

Hugh won an Emmy for hosting the Tony awards in 2004 and was nominated for one again for the same show for 2005. I think he’ll do fine.

    cool.

  • the real jc.

Fantastic choice. Although I love the comedians, mostly, that have hosted in recent years, Hugh will definitely add some real style and class. He’s so charming up on stage and knows how to work the crowd. He’ll be great.

Yeah!!! great choice! The man can sing and dance and be funny. Way to go, oscars!

  • delurking

Good choice now if they only will get rid of the opening monologue and nominate blockbusters that are Oscar worthy. People would watch. also make it a 2 hour special.

  • paulhogan

i guess they couldn’t find someone good who wanted to do it, so they settled for him, sad, though who the hell could watch this cr@p for 3plus hours is beyond me no matter who hosts it, they should hand out the main acting/directing awards only and this show would be 2hrs tops. Forget about art direction, cinematographer, et al, they should hand those out on a different day.

  • jelz

He will do a wonderful job hosting the Oscars. Should be an interesting ceremony.

  • ra

Hugh is an outstanding choice for host. He’s charming, handsome, comfortable in front of a live audience, and talented as hell. Just hope they get a decent bunch of writers so he doesn’t have to say dumb things.

I can hardly wait for Feb. 22! Finally, an Oscars that will be worth watching, no matter who is nominated.

  • Jako

    Cant wait for Oscar…
