Melissa Etheridge Flip-Flops on Rick Warren

Legendary rocker Melissa Etheridge has come away with a different opinion of pastor Rick Warren after speaking with him recently. President-elect Barack Obama has chosen the Orange County mega-pastor to deliver the invocation at his swearing, which has dismayed many Hollywood liberals. Previously, actor Alan Cumming had taken to HuffPo to voice his opinion.

Melissa
also shared on HuffPo, “I received a call from Pastor Rick, and before I could say anything, he told me what a fan he was. He had most of my albums from the very first one. What? This didn’t sound like a gay hater, much less a preacher. He explained in very thoughtful words that as a Christian he believed in equal rights for everyone. He believed every loving relationship should have equal protection. He struggled with proposition 8 because he didn’t want to see marriage redefined as anything other than between a man and a woman. He said he regretted his choice of words in his video message to his congregation about proposition 8 when he mentioned pedophiles and those who commit incest. He said that in no way, is that how he thought about gays.”

It would be nice to hear him make those comments in front of a crowd-not just hearing it second hand. Until then my opinion of him stays the same. And it’s not good.

  • Sheepskin is best

So because he’s a fan of hers…she likes him all of a sudden? Typical Hollywood narcissist.

I love ME but someone who equates homosexuality with incest paedophelia has no place on that Inauguration stage. Warren also believes that men are superior to women and that husband must be obeyed. He has also said that people who support reproductive choice are like the perpetrators of the Holocaust.

I understand he has scrubbed all the gay hate-speech off his website but he hasn’t repudiated his past statements or apologized for his efforts to pass Prop. 8. If that is who P.E. Obama wants to associate with that is his business. I won’t support anyone in Rick Warren’s camp.

  • josiah

Shut up bout this rick warren crap already!!!!!!!! its not entertainment news who even cares. I come to this website to get news about real celebrities not melissa etheridge and alan cumming.

  • MAria

Wow, this is sad. He’s compromising his morals for the sake of fame. Warren, you’re a sad man. The act of homosexuality is what is a sin; God commands Christians not to hate anyone. But now that Warren is lying to people is just sad.

Why doesn’t Rick Warren make himself a video denouncing his past comments, instead of telling the word about his fictitious horny gay friends and using Melissa as some quasi wacked-out lesbian mouthpiece. And she needs to shut it already–she speaks only for herself. I hate Rick Warren!

Why is Rick Warren on this site ?? He isn’t a Celebrity… He is a pastor at the church down the street from me..

And I don’t understand why he is inagorating (sp?) Obama.

  • Rosa

She likes him suddenly because he has her albums? Oh come on… he’s on damage control and he’s just used her.

  • IMAGINAQUE

    Oh, please!

Melissa Etheridge is pathetic. She is willing to forgive and forget all Quack Warren has said and stood for… Because he likes her music?

    Pathetic.

Melissa: “Oh, Reverend, you like me, you like me, yipee! Well, then, I’ll go ahead and swallow all your b*llsh*t then! Gimme more, please!”

    Pathetic.

Melissa Ethridge realizes that we all live in the same planet and we can’t and shouldn’t force each others beliefs down our throats.

We have to come half-way and work together.
That’s why Obama has Rick Warren AND ANOTHER PASTOR as well. Pastor Lewis. We have to recognize our differences.

It is kinda annoying that we always have to be pressured to change what we think is right in order not to get people angry. They think that it is right to be gay, and others don’t. Why can’t we stick to our opinions? There is nothing wrong in believing that this wrong. It is not like we do it out of hate. We just don’t think people of the same sex should get married.
So why can’t everyone stick to what they believe in and if someone doesn’t agree with them then just ignore them. Gosh, people.

  • yup

    I kinda agree with #12.

  • mike

why is it a joke that she is not resorting to hate but rather choosing to just forgive him and let it go…and why is everyone concentrating on the fact that he said he was a “fan”. That’s only one sentence of the entire statement…there are other things he said in that statement as well that could have made her forgive him…..dumb asses lol but who cares???

  • mike

and i think her forgiving him is more of the fact that he called her and took the time out to talk rather than just be ignorant….you know? oh well lol

  • sin

All sex outside of marriage is a sin. Hetro and gay.

  • may

I don’t think Warren was saying that homosexual marriage is like incest or pedophilia, he was probably stating that he doesn’t codone marriage that is he considers wrong in his morals and religion. Although he could’ve put it better than that though. I think there are to many misconceptions on both sides. To many people are spending so much time being angry at one another rather than trying to resolve the situation as best they can. That’s all Obama was trying to do, open up the dialogue, not condone someone else’s opinons about homosexuality. It’s not that Christians and religious people hate gays. The idea of gay marriage is the turning point, but the fact that gay people should be given the rights they deserve not only as citizens but as human beings is something all Christians are for. Until society has gotten past their ill feelings it won’t be such a problem anymore.

  • may

Religious people aren’t against nor do they hate gays. It’s more of a rock and a hard place situation. Although the idea of gay marriage isn’t something people agree on, the fact that gay people should be automatically given the rights that are their’s is something everyone can agree. Especially those who are religious. I don’t think Warren was saying gay marriage was like incest in a disgusting way, he was really saying that he doesn’t condone things that he doesn’t agree with morally or religiously. He could’ve explained it better that way though. Once gay rights isn’t so divided socially things won’t be as much of a problem anymore. That’s really what Obama was trying to do, open up the dialogue on these isssues. It’s a good thing because people’s true feelings have been expressed rather than us repressing everything and putting a smile on our faces. Frankly if we all just stay angry at one another we’re never going to get anywhere, so let’s try and be civil at some point.

I didn’t mean to post that many times, my computers messed up, sorry. :(

If he is wiling to try to make amends for not being 100% tolerant, people should cut him some slack because if you never forgive people who are trying to move away from their own ignorance, then there is no point in these people trying to change in the first place. If the ultimate goal is for people to be accepted for who they are, then reconciliation has to start somewhere.

  • Christine

Thank you, JustJared, for reporting both sides of an argument and not being ignorant.

    Jared
I know you’re upset and hurt but this use to be a fun, escapist site. Lots of Warren posts these days. I know you’re processing this. Some people, like Melissa, are seeing it as an opportunity. Does it always have to be, either you’re with me or you’re against me? There could be mulitple paths on the journey to freedom for gays. Reconcilliation with those who oppose you might be one way.

Meanwhile, what are your plans to change millions of American’s minds about gay marriage? I’d be really interested because just staying in the pain is not going to change the hearts and minds of the people that are against you.

Look forward to coming back here when Justjared is once more an escapist, celebrity site and not Americablog or Huffingtonpost. But obviously, your site, your call.

    Respectfully,
    Edwina

Hello Folks……Merry Christmas to all….. I’m a Christian and I think the solution to this might be simple. What I propose is that we let our Gay and Lesbian neighbors get married with all the same legal rights but only through The Justice of The Peace! All religions have the right to practice as they believe just as all secular people do. That is the American way. Take for example an Indian burial ground….well these places must be respected nomater how weird or intolerant or whatever they may seem…..Lets just make the compromise and get back to living our lives CHILDREN. AMEN and GOD bless you all.

  • Kiki

Yep, a 100 percent heterosexual female here who fully supports the gay community in getting married through the legal process and in any spiritual service that, also, supports and honors them as full-fledged humans.

Although I support the President-elect’s choice of Rick Warren, I personally do not support any spiritual leader who arrogantly believes he fully understands the Mind of God’s intentions in lovingly creating each and everyone of us, i.e. red/black/yellow/white or heterosexual/bi-sexual/homosexual.

  • Tia

I agree w/ #2 & #27. It’s a start. Religious people need to be more open- this is still America. However- Gay people need to be open themselves too. Melissa is trying & she is trying with love, not the hate I’ve personally seen from other gay people. I understand gay people’s position of frustration, but hate and bitterness does not do anything either- so give ME a break.

Hey, Jess….Uh, I think that’s called a civil union, and that doesn’t seem to satisfy the gay community, who want to have all the same rights as straights.

Odd that the only ones who seem to want to get married these days are the gays, and they can’t!
