Gerard Butler is Robert Burns

Gerard Butler is Robert Burns

Gerard Butler is set to play Scottish poet/lyricist Robert Burns in an upcoming biopic.

According to UK’s Times Online, the film will be titled Burns and will focus on his love affairs with his wife Jean Armour and Agnes McLehose, also known as Clarinda, an Edinburgh society hostess.

In an interview with the BBC, Gerry shared, “In a way but I feel so lucky to have that opportunity because it’s such a great story and we have the best script by Alan Sharp, who wrote Rob Roy. I cajoled Julia Stiles into doing it but she told me it was the best script she’d read in years so she’s on board and we also have Brian Cox. We cover Burns’ life from the ploughman days to the Edinburgh society days and his take-off as a poet. It’s beautiful, it’s passionate, it’s sexy, it’s hilarious and it’s really quite sad as well.”

I’m thrilled Gerard Butler will be playing Robert Burns. He is a passionate actor and becomes his characters – he’ll be perfect.
This has been a dream of his to play this role. Robert Burns life will cover a broad range of love, passion, humor, and hardships even though he died at an early age. I’m so glad a scotsman like Gerry Butler will be playing the role.

I am so excited about this project – Go Gerry!

Gerry has been wanting to make this movie for years now and finally its going to happen. Well great for him. It doesnt matter if he looks too old to play the part, that’s where makeup comes in, though he doesnt need it. He has a baby face every time that man shaves. As for James, he looks too young to play burns. I’m just happy to learn that its finally being made cause its been on the shelf for so long.

    cheers!

James McAvoy earlier in the planning of this movie, was suppose to be playing one of Robert Burn’s friends in the movie, (so obviously he wouldn’t be playing Burns in this movie, duh), yes he is younger, but Gerry is backing this movie all the way and financing is all in place now, woohoo, so it should be great.

I am really looking forward to Burns being made. As others have said, this film has been on Gerard’s list for a long time, at least 5 years. He is the actor for the role and I have no doubt that he will do a superb job. For those of you that have not seen the likes of The Jury or Please! then you will not have a good idea of Mr Butlers true talent as an actor. These parts were some of his very best roles, along with Dear Frankie, in my opinion.

James McAvoy is also a superb actor and I think he was down to have a part in this production but he could not play Burns, he’s too small and does not have the passionate presence that Gerard has which is very necessary to play Robert Burns.

Good luck to Mr. Butler, I think this film will do very, very well.

Although I do like Gerard Butler, he would be the last of the three that were considered for the part (the others being Johny Depp and Ewan McGregor – neither of these wonderful actors would be suited, either). If you want the perfect Robert Burns, look no further than Jim Sturgess. They look remarkably alike, and he has the perfect personality for the role. I only hope it’s not truly set for Gerard. This would be a shame, indeed.
