Dev Patel is The Last Airbender

Dev Patel is The Last Airbender

Slumdog Millionaire star, Dev Patel waits for his limo after a meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday (January 31).

According to Variety, the 18-year-old British actor has been cast in Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Films live-action flick based on a Nick TV series. Because of scheduling conflicts, Dev replaced Jesse McCartney as Zuko, a member of the Fire Nation, .

In the director’s seat is M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs). “Jesse had tour dates that conflicted with a boot camp I always hold on my films, and where the actors here have to train for martial arts,” Shyamalan said. “[Dev was] already one of the guys I was interested in. Then I saw Slumdog Millionaire, and the kid just grew in my eyes.”

So Shyamalan knew him fom his work on “SKINS” too? As far as I know that´s the only work he´s done before.

Hm, nice that he gets a chance to do other stuff.(though, who would have thought that he would beat Nicholas Hoult)

  • 01212

I think it’s not right to get someone for Zuko who has an indian accent. No offense..

  • Jules

Indian accent? It’s called acting. He is from London.

  • seriously?

well atleast he finally has someone that can look the part of Zuko compared to Jesse…I mean seriously … Shyamalans work has been going down the tube for years. The fact he got mostly if not all white actors from the start for a movie based on a series that is multi cultural was a bad sign. Hopefully we’ll see some more replacements due to ‘scheduling’. Not that I dont’ think Jackson Ratheborne wouldnt be great but some of the other choices are horrible. Movies based on popular franchises should atleast attempt to stay close to the source material without alienating newer audiences. Unfortantely his ‘choice’ of actors alienats fans and when it releases would alienate everyone else like a really bad 80s style video game movie.

  • tweety

#2, Please do your research. Dev was born and grew up in London, hence he has British accent.

  • Anna

I love him much. He was amazing on Skins <3

    OMG!! Looved ‘Avatar’!!

  • devina

What a cutie pie! Totally took the movie on his young shoulders. I see a lot of coverage for the female who was in the movie for less than 5 mins. Finally this kid is getting some coverage.

  • Beth

He was born n brought up in london, freaking racist!

Dev patel is a black belt in Taek Won Do. It will definitely suit the role he will play in Airbender.

can this kid even act?!? LOL who cares, i’ll just ignore his character if he’s in the movie. LOL

  • lakers fan in boston

lol this guy actually looks like the last air bender
or maybe a character from the show, idk its been ages since ive watched it

  • Anne

he’s pretty thin and tall to play Zuko. I’d just think that maybe he would gain weight or something. I just can’t see him doing it, but then I couldn’t imagine Jesse McCartney (blank stare) as Zuko either.

Why do i just not have such a good feeling about this movie? I really hope this is Night’s redemption. I mean “The Happening” was okay but Mark Wahlberg with a Boston accent living in Philly? Well, I digress…Please Night, do not screw this up.

  • holly

What? This guy is going to be zuko? Look, he is WAY better in acting than jesse mcartney, but i think it would have been wise to cast someone who LOOKS the part, instead of just acting the part. Besides, isn’t zukos skin supposed to be LIGHTER than kataras? and no, that is NOT being rascits for those who like to play the race card at will.

  • lisa

Saw him on Leno …. he was ADORABLE!!! Love his British accent.

  • ji

SO ADORABLE. GOD I LOVE HIM

    i love dev patel
    and such a true talent
    im happy for him
    go dev!!

  • vmars111

Jesse had “conflicting tour date schedules???” LOL!!!

M Night should’ve said: “Jesse was cast as Zuko, but then everyone complained because he’s a white guy playing a very, very, Chinese-looking boy. So naturally we gave the part to an Indian-British guy.”

  • Athena

He’s a good actor, but he doesn’t look anything like Zuko. What is up with the casting choices for this film? o_O

Why is it that he is automatically hated just because he isn’t from America? Only the best actors are foreign.

  • Kase

When I saw his pic, I thought he would be a good as Saka. Seriously though, Avatar is heavly base on Asian cultures, and picking American actors(no effense to Americans) to play an Asian role is weird. The vibe would totally be wrong…

  • r Lim

I’m kind of happy that they changed at least one of the cast, but I feel like it was just to make the fans happy, which is a good thing, but the casting still feels wrong. Like this will be the only casting change.

I’m a British born Chinese, so I’ve got nothing against him being a brit actor, plus he was good in Skins, but the fact is that Zuko is comes from a Chinese/Japanese looking culture. With Dev Patel cast as Zuko, this would mean that Iroh, Azula, Ozai, Zuko’s mum will also have to be cast by people of indian descent. Does anyone else think that this will look slightly strange?

  • RYAN

THE PERSON WHO COMMENTED 2ND IS AN IDIOT!

DEV PATEL DOES NOT HAVE AN INDIAN ACCENT

HE WAS BORN AND RAISED IN ENGLAND AND HE HAS A VERY BRISTISH ACCENT

ITS CALLED ACTING AS AN INDIAN RETARD

  • RYAN

    P.S DEV PATEL IS AMAZING!

LOVE HIS WORK ON THE TV SHOW SKINS AND SLUMDOG MILLIONARE..CAN’T WAIT TO SEE HIM IN MORE FILMS

  • ml

wtf. even tho this is a step ahead from before. i’m still not happy with the cast. he does not look like zuko. i think night is just casting people who he think will make big money. he saw that the recent movie that dev was in was good so he cast him in. and also because he wanted to play the uncle part. i will not support this movie at all. i’ll stick my animation then this mixandmatch cast.

Shymaylan looks to be getting thrown to the Hollywood wolves if you ask me. Love the actor, but the casting is ridiculous and with so many things working against this movie there is no way it will even compare to the show. I can only imagine the possibility of race not being a factor in this production if everyone has different races in their heritage and people are born to different races all the time just as a panda has a bird for a father in Kung Fu Panda. Otherwise I believe Forbidden Kingdom has already explored this fascinating category of Americans occupying Eastern Influenced martial arts movies. It can be a whole new world of course like Star Wars but it will more likely be offensive like Phantom Menace. If you want to be acurate, have white people play the fire nation, asians the air nation, blacks the water nation, and native americans the earth nation. That would be even better than the show.

I am a huge fan of the show, but am planning to boycott this movie!

Derek Kirk Kim says it best in his blog:
imagine if someone had made a “fantasy” movie in which the entire world was built around African culture. Everyone is wearing ancient African clothes, African hats, eating traditional African food, writing in an African language, living in African homes, all encompassed in an African landscape…

    …but everyone is white.

How offensive, insulting, and disrespectful would that be toward Africans and African Americans? How much more offensive would it be if only the heroes were white and all the villains and background characters were African American?

This is exactly what is happening with Avatar and I refuse to support it.

  • Anna

By the way, in case it wasn’t obvious in my posting, the headline for this story is wrong. Dev Patel is not the Last Airbender. He will be the enemy of the Last Airbender.

  • h15T0RY R3P34T5

What does it matter what race he is anyway? They never make a race association for ANY chacater in Avatar. The nations are all fictional, LOOSELY based on Asian, Indian, and European cultures. Given that this is the case, an Indian (not a native american) would make a dandy fit for almost any character. Katara and Sokka, being from the pole, would essentially be Inuit, or Eskimo. So really, if you were wanting someone “white” for the role, that would be an inaccurate presentation of the source character.

And who said he was too thin!? Do you see meat ANYWHERE on Zuko? Seriously, I have all three book,s and watch them constantly. ZuZu isn’t exactly buff by anyone’s standards. (And before I get flamed, buff and cut are two different things)

And actually, I think he looks alot like Zuko. Give him longer hair, and throw a scar on him. You must remember, when the creators were doing the series, they wanted a more asian/anime style color palette. If you watch almost ANY anime, just about everyone is light-skinned, regardless of race. In translation, however, Zuko is NOT asian. And since the sun is an essential part of a fire bender’s life, we’d have to assume that he would be darker skinned…at the very least, tanned.

Of course, the IC is filled with cynical pre-teens and disillusioned “smart” fans who think they know everything. Picking apart a project like vultures on a carcass is just what happens.

I think he’ll do just fine. In fact, I think everyone will be surprised by this whole production.

  • h15T0RY R3P34T5

44…you’re not getting it. I’m guessing your making the comparison to the asian culture? Do the water tribes seem AT ALL asian to you? Honestly?

And why on God’s earth should blacks play the water tribe?!? If ANYTHING, you got Fire, Water, and Earth mixed up. Water tribe, like the Eskimos they are based upon, are NATIVE AMERICAN. Blacks are dark skinned as a natural condition to living in sun scorched areas of the world. They would be your firebenders…at least, based on your ideas.

And seriously, boycotting a movie over an actor you dislike? Some fan you are. I’d see this movie if it were Sylvester Stalone as Ozai, and leoDiCaprio as Aang. If you love the base material, you need to be willing to go into this with an open mind…Imagine what X-Men fans felt when they saw a stupid, teenage Anna Paquin as Rogue? or a computer as Stark’s Jarvis? Or just about anything from any movie that’s based on written or animated material.

You simply can’t translate it to the big screen perfectly. Narnia, DaVinci Code, even LOTR…if you read them first, then chances are you were a little disappointed. But if you went into them with an open mind, then you know that at least two of them were pretty good.

And c’mon…what’s wrong with Phantom Menace?

  • anonymous

oh myy god!!!!!!! he is sooo cute, when i saw him i fell in love!!! he is so perfect and his body too, please how can somebody de so cute!”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(L)

  • Immahyena

Personally, I believe he looks nothing like Zuko, which is a huge part of the series.
He is a very good actor, I’ll give him that, but even with his magical scar, he’ll look about as much as Zuko as my cat looks like a dog.
Plus, even if Zuko was to be played by a white person, if you’ve ever noticed in the first series, he’s incredibly white for a fire bender, something that I’ve noticed after deciding to re-watch the series.

He would do awesome as Sokka however, the two have the same goofy smile, and very identical looks. When I first heard of this, I was certain they made a mistake in writing Zukos name instead of Sokka.

I understand the complaints over the lack of minorities, but throwing some guy in (who looks nothing like the character he’ll be playing) is pretty… poor. Hopefully, the casting list will be changed.

  • RITA

@holly: That’s exactly what I was thinking. Hopefully his acting makes up for it :)
