Kanye West Covers 'Details' March 2009

Kanye West takes the March 2009 cover of Details, on stands February 24. Interview highlights below, some NSFW:

On Kanye ready to pour all his “superhero” energy into conquering fashion: “Put this in the magazine: There’s nothing more to be said about music. I’m the f—ing end-all, be-all of music. I know what I’m doing. I did 808s in three weeks. I got it. It’s on cruise control. . . . Man, we talked about music for God knows how long! Now let’s talk about how my f—ing sweater didn’t come back right from Korea. That’s what’s interesting me.”

On having natural talent as a kid: “First beat I did was in seventh grade, on my computer. I got into doing beats for the video games I used to try to make. My game was very sexual. The main character was, like, a giant penis. It was like Mario Brothers, but the ghosts were, like, vaginas. Mind you, I’m 12 years old, and this is stuff 30-year-olds are programming. You’d have to draw in and program every little step”it literally took me all night to do a step, ’cause the penis, y’know, had little feet and eyes.”

On what makes him so hard-working: “People ask me a lot about my drive. I think it comes from, like, having a sexual addiction at a really young age. Look at the drive that people have to get sex”to dress like this and get a haircut and be in the club in the freezing cold at 3 A.M., the places they go to pick up a girl. If you can focus the energy into something valuable, put that into work ethic.”

On being the voice of the voice of this generation: “If not me, then who? Someone could be a better rapper, dance better. But culturally impacting? When you look back at these four and a half years, who’s the icon at the end of the day? Who broke down color barriers? What other black guy would a white person use as a fashion reference?”

On using “gay” as a compliment: “Titles are very important. I like to embody titles, y’know, or words that have negative connotations, and explain why that’s good,” he says. “Take the word gay”like, in hip-hop, that’s a negative thing, right? But in the past two, three years, all the gay people I’ve encountered have been, like, really, really, extremely dope. Y’know, I haven’t, like, gone to a gay bar, nor do I ever plan to. But where I would talk to a gay person”the conversation would be mostly around, like, art or design”it’d be really dope. From a design standpoint, kids’ll say, ‘Dude, those pants are gay.’ But if it’s, like, good, good, good fashion-level, design-level stuff, where it’s on a higher level than the average commercial design stuff, it’s, like, gay people that do that. I think that should be said as a compliment. Like, ‘Dude, that’s so good it’s almost . . . gay.’”

why does he always look constipated or as if he just farted? all the time.

what an ugly person inside and outside.

  • RM

Can’t he shut up? No-one cares about the rubbish he comes out with.

And he’s not the voice of a generation either. He’s one of many rappers with a big ego!

  • hannahh

STFU! He’s so annoying. No one cares that much about you’re music! There are no icons today. No one is talented enough to ever be an icon these days. Ugh get over yourself. Loser!

  • Harry

    What a pompous ass!

I don’t think you can claim yourself to be a voice of a generation or an icon. Sure other people can do so (after a long time of reflection to assess your impact etc). But not you yourself Kanye. If he is the voice of this generation then I’m obviously not a part of this generation as I’ve only ever heard about 5 songs of his, all of which I thought were shite. Then again I hate almost all r&b/rap so he didn’t have much of a chance with me to start with anyway.

  • [☆I n F a m o u s☆]

1 – his face looks like that cause he broke it (his jaw) in a car accident. oh, he almost died too. LOL
2 – on the contrary.. obviously a lot of people care about the rubbish he comes out with. LOL
3 – if no one cared about his music he wouldn’t have sold so many damn records. LOL or concert seats LOL
the college dropout – 3x platinum. *multiple grammys*
late registration – (sold over 860,000 copies, first week) 3x platinum. *multiple grammys*
graduation – 3x platinum. *multiple grammys*
    808s – platinum.
    4 – most geniuses are.
and i don’t even like his recently turned crazy-homō ass. hahaha

  • freakyboy

What other black guy would a white person use as a fashion reference?

What about Michael Jackson ? was Kanye born yesterday or what?
With his thriller jacket and his glove and so much more,he was more black than ever when that happened. He was a HUGE icon and his music dominated the world (white AND coloured). He has broken down more barriers than this kanye ever did.End-all and be-all of music?!Even MJ hasnt said that abt himself.who says such things abt themselves?wth man.what the hell is wrong with him!

  • Harry

    #7 = OMG, you’re actually calling him a genius – now that’s laughable.

  • that’s hideous

he’s so full of himself it’s hard to take
i couldnt even read the whole interview!

  • yoyo

I don’t understand why jared keeps putting this prick’s picture up.

  • Eric

New flash Kanye: Nobody cares. You just need to crawl in a hole and never come back out.

Seriously, what is up with him? Does he realize how self-absorbed he is? And does he realize that nobody actually cares about his music anymore. He is a has been that people don’t care about anymore.

And how many times does he say the word ‘like’ in a sentence. Learn how to speak!

  • SHeively

At the end of the day, people always realize that this man is a genius at what he does!!!! Being confident and arrogant is Kanye’s persona so im glad he still has that despite all the crap he’s gone through. Say what you will about Mr. West but the music speaks for itself and everyone will get on board soon enough!!!!! 12 grammys in 4 years!!!!

  • yo

#12 aka FERGIE FERG. If you call yourself “Fergie” I have NO RESPECT FOR YOUR UPINIONS ABOUT MUSIC!!!!!!

  • sharon

This guy must be exhausted at the end of the day from hauling that gigantic ego around.

  • [☆I n F a m o u s☆]

9 – he is, like him or not. none of his competitors are doing what he’s does. LOL my opinion doesn’t matter, neither does yours.. his peers think he’s the shiit. that’s what matters. LOL
13 – you must live in a cave.. or under a very big dirty rock if you think he’s irrelevant in the music industry. LOL he probably has more grammy’s than you have friends. hahahahaha*pause*hahahahaha

  • Romag

#17 stop kissing his ass, you’re the only one who is defending him.

He is not an icon/voice of a generation and will never be anything near it!

  • The Pundit

He’s a very sad little boy. No one CONSTANTLY engages in that level of self-congratulation without having an awful lot of inner demons they are trying to slay.

For him, it is his DL lifestyle. He knows his Hip Hop “image” would suffer if the world knew of his many boyfriends, so he engages in the kind of swaggering braggadocio that is common in the genre, attempting to paint himself as an ICON, while hoping no one will look too closely at his private life and his “beard” of an ex-fiance.

There are hundreds of other rappers/hip hop stars who ALSO think they are the “Voice” of their generation. But when you have only been performing for a few years, NONE OF THEM ARE ICONS, they are merely present-day celebrities. Ten, 20, 30, 40 years from now, if his music is STIIL referential (as are the Beatles, as is Elvis, as are the Stones, as is Chuck Berry and the legion of black R&B artists who defined early Rock&Roll, THEN he can be called the voice of a generation. For now, he is merely a semiliteralt little punk who should use some of his millions to hire a private tutor. It is shocking to know that his mother was an English professor, since he can barely speak on a grade-school level.

  • The Pundit

“semiliterate” – At least I recognize the typo, while I seriously doubt Kanye would.

  • King

After reading all these comments its obvious to see that most you people have never took the time out and listen to this mans music. I am a very big Kanye West fan and i agree that he is very arrogant and his ego is bigger then anyone in the music industry. But that is what makes him Kanye West. Voice of this Generation is an understatement. its been 5 years and he has 12 grammys and 4 Platnuim selling albums. Thats not an easy thing to do. You have to look at the facts instead of voicing opinions.

And the fact is that he is the most recognizable artist in music!!!!
Like him or Not….The Man gets the job done…Whether hes rapping or singing!!!!

  • Mmmm

    i luv him!!!!:P

I think he might be slightly retarded.

Yes, by all means, let’s look at FACTS. Twelve Grammys in 5 years, huh? Well, In 1984 Michael Jackson won 8 Grammys in ONE NIGHT. In his career, Jackson has had NINE Platinum singles in the US alone, and has won more Billboard Awards (26) than any other male artist (13 of them in 1983). Thriller is the best selling album of all time with 104 MILLION copies sold. Jackson is the best selling artist of all time with 750 MILLION records sold and, worldwide, has won more music awards than any other artist in the HISTORY of music.

Yet TODAY, he is an international PUNCHLINE who is so broke he is auctioning off his possessions.

You are VERY YOUNG if you think Kanyetts’a measly little short-term career is a measure of longevity. It isn’t. He should be grateful for his current success and should recognize that NO ONE is too big to eventually take a GREAT FALL in the music industry. Let’s see if anyone even remembers his name 20 years from now.

  • [☆I n F a m o u s☆]

um, you might not have noticed… but look who you ‘compared’ kanye to. hahaha michael jacket – the great musician, musical artist, pop / musical icon of all time. um, that alone says everything that anyone could say about kanye. thank you.
personal life aside.. mj’s still known as the greatest.. the kind of pop. lmbaoo
men lie, women lie, numbers don’t! opinions mean nothing – numbers do. kanye’s numbers puts him on track to be one of the biggest ego’ed artist of time. deal with it. hahahaha

How could I have possibly failed to see the comparison when it is I who took the time to collect the data? Of course MJ is undeniably the best selling, most successful, most acknowledged artist iof all time. My point was that even HE has suffered a great fall and he actually WAS the megastar that Kanyetta only PRETENDS to be. Kanye West will be nothing more than a minor footnote in musical history, which makes his overblown ego all the more amusing.

  • Edrice91

this guy is smart if u ask me
everybody says how much they dislike him and think he’s self centered but he’s using it as a trap
cuz no matter wat ppl say
they always wanna see wat he’s doin or hear wat he’s doin
    its genius
everything he says he knows that ppl are gonna go wild about it
he’s using it as a media persona
and everybodys caught in his trap
thats why he stays in the limelight and he’ll neva leave it

wow…kayne west is about the mosty annoying celebrity out their..why do people still buy his music..hes such an asshole..this is what fame does to famwhores!!!

  • King

Notice i said Of this Generation. This is a New Century, new Millennium, yes Michael Jackson is the greatest of all time, but in his generation there wasn’t the technology that we have now. I.E…Getting on the computer to download music, itunes, mp3….see what im saying!!!!
Theres no way kanye can do the numbers mike put up…its impossible with how easy it is to get music….BUT…..

Kanye is on track to be the best in his generation..

    Now The Facts…
His Debut Album, The College Dropout, has Sold over 3 Million copies, Rolling Stones best album of the year and voted one of Times Magazines 100 best of all time albums…

Hold on This shit gets better….

His Sophmore Album, Late Registration, My Favorite one, sold 860,000 records in the first week, also triple platinum like his debut!!!
Also Rolling stones album of the year…Like his debut….but my favorite part is, he didnt do soul samples like his first album…The man switched it up and went fully orchestra…genius!!!

I Would add more about the next two albums….Like Graduation and 808s & Heartbreak..but it seems you can probably see where im going with this shit…..Straight Facts

Kanye is not a musical talent. He’s a gimmick that’s already gotten old. Plus every time he opens his mouth he shows us just how big an a$$hole he can be. Pundit is right. He’ll be a musical footnote at best. Won’t be long before he loses it and becomes a preacher – this generation’s MC Hammer.

  • The Pundit

King, I will use YOUR stated criteria: You wish to stay within HIS generation, and you wish to use record sales to support your proposition that he is the “Voice of his Generation,” correct? I will also do you the courtesy of staying within the rap/hip hop genre.

The 860,000 first-week sales of Late Registration pale in comparison to Eminem’s sophmore album, The Marshall Mathers LP (2000), which sold 1.7 MILLION copies in the FIRST WEEK of release, making it the FASTEST SELLING RAP ALBUM IN HISTORY. In total, the album went NINE times platinum. The Eminem Show (2002) went TEN Ttimes platinum and was his THIRD STRAIGHT album to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album of the Year.

Even more spectacular was OutKast ‘s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003) which went ELEVEN TIMES PLATINUM!!! Though slightly older (yet arguably still within your generational guidelines), Notorious B.I.G. ‘s Life After Death (1997) went TEN times platimun, and 50 Cent ‘s, The Massacre (200?), went NINE times platinum . These numbers are from RIAA.

King, I understand that you like Kanye, but my point remains valid — not enough time has passed for you to call him anything other than a CURRENTLY successful “artist.”. An artist is only christened the “Voice of a Generation” in RETROSPECT. Right now, the generation ITSELF is still evolving, still being defined, still trying to find itself. In short — you kids are still kids.

King, with all due respect, your position lacks the critical analysis that comes with age. Youth always thinks its own time is more spectacular than it actually is. Kanye is a currenlty-successful little brat, nothing more. B.I.G. and Tupac will each be remembered long after people have forgotten how to even pronounce Kanye’s name.

  • anon

By the way, record sales and awards are no indication of real musical talent. If they were, Britney Spears would be the new Mozart.

  • halli

Next thing you know this bastard will organize a mass cult and make everyone kill themeselves. He obviously thinks he is the be all and end all, so do it Kanye! Prove you are the greatest by creating your own massive suicidal cult that follows your every word and then they kill themeselves.

trust me when i say… there are more people that hate this prick then like him. look at the amount of people here that say they are annoyed with him compared to the people that like him. But right now he’s got his love locked down so leave him alone… LOL!!! He had to change his voice to a robot/human for that song? What a moron!! I’m a gay american and this comment came up recently within the office and anytime “THAT’S GAY” phrase is used is is a negative cannotation. It is NEVER OK to say, that’s gay or even in his example of fashion that “THAT’S GAY” should be “DOPE” in a good, good, good, good way.

I always have, and always will, take offense to “That’s GAY” as a phrase because it’s derrogatory and relates to “That’s abnormal”, “That’s not right”, “That’s weird”…. need I insert more?

Take from “Bush doesn’t like black people” that “Kanye is gay and can’t come to terms with it and is now trying to make himself look not gay and somehow gangsta” – bull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sooner than later he is going to hang him self on his own words. No one that can’t stand Him wants to spend the time pouring through all the crap He’s said, and anyone that does like Him, is only focused on one small part to see Him as a whole, but if they did it would be troubling. If you can force your self to take in enough of his self indulgent B.S., you will see Him in true form, an over Ego’ed tell you what you want to hear at the moment false reflection of what He thinks you want to see. Race transcender, in His mind only, in the closet racist, in His own words. It has been openly stated in His “crew” that He thinks of people of any mixed race as mutts. OK, to use to get what you need out of them, but people He would never give an opportunity to. When it comes to His taste for white people, it seems to stop at their money. When picking out a surgeon for His Mother’s plastic surgery He went with a fast talking Doctor of His own racial back ground, who had a huge list of complaints and legal issues, and almost no legal training, who even turned out to not be board certified. Upon attempting what most would think to be a routine procedure for any L.A. Doc in the field, Kanye’s choice accidentally killed his Mother. He claimed His Mother to mean so much to Him, why not find a Doctor with the best medical history, rather than going with the Doctor with the best choice in racial history. If this is how you run your personal affairs for the most important person to you, what choices are you going to make for the generation you wish to speak for? If this is who we picked to be the leader of our generation, the person who will open the road to our future, then that would be one road I would be scared to drive down.
