Olympic champion Michael Phelps speaks candidly to NBC’s Matt Lauer about the night he was photographed smoking pot from a bong, the impact it has had on his career, and why its important for him to return his focus back to what he loves most, his family and swimming. Here are some interview snippets:
On how he found out about the pot pic: “I forgot how it was. Somewhere in– it was through an e-mail form. And I had no idea really what to do. You know, I knew that I’d made a mistake and made a bad judgment. And– and, you know, I know that when you do make a mistake, you know, you’re responsible for all of the consequences. And I was willing to, you know, accept the fact that I did make a mistake.”
On what happened the night of the pic was taken: “I mean, we were just celebrating, honestly. And– you know, there was probably two or three people there I didn’t know. It was a very small group. Six or seven people probably total in the whole house. Like nothing major. You know, not like a giant college house party. It was nothing like that. It was just a small group and we were just sitting around and celebrating.”

It’s not a mistake when you are a worldly, savvy person. He knew EXACTLY what he was doing and now he’s making excuses. You messed up Mike and there’s no turning the clock back.
Everyone is just over reacting. He did pot. Who cares? It’s not like he beat up his girlfriend or anything. This is stupid. I know lot’s of successful people who have experimented w/this sorta stuff. He’s a talented Olympian. Who freakin cares if he’s tried pot. Matt your wrong. The memory I’ll have of Michael Phelps is that amazing race when they beat the dumba** french! Silly to make such a fuss over this. Most young people will try it at least once at some point in their lives even if only out of curiosity. There are a lot worse things he could have done and a lot worse drugs he could have tried. Actually alcohol is harder on the body and impairs a person more. At least he hasn’t been caught driving while drunk! And I agree – time to move on. This has been played to death.
It’s not just the pot issue. Ever since his new found fame after the Olympics, he has been more than experimenting with the ‘bad side’. His choice of girlfriends says alot. They are trashy girls who expose more of themselves than the public wants to see.

Well, agree or not with pot use is a personal decision, but people jsut forget that it is a CRIME still! Other thing important to remember is if a regular guy uses pot he would be in jail but Phelps not, in his case it was just a “mistake”.
Other point is he is an athlete, he kept all his life saying he is against drugs and so on , but he did that, ok it was out of the pool , but still a lie.
That was a shame really.

Sorry he can not go to jail because he didn’t get caught, he is in a picture, not in his car or ….
It wasn’t a mistake, of course, I think he was doing something really normal, depends what you think is normal…in amesterdan it is, in california depending it is…then worry about your life, and forget about oders.
Law is for everyone, including michael phelps, because if you do remember he was in jail for DIU. OK???
Well I’ll be watchin’. Yes he made a mistake and I hope he knows better next time to not smoke where there’s camera phones in plain view. I’m sure he’ll put this behind him and get back to doing what he does best, living free and swimming hard.
