Roger Ebert: Two Thumbs Up!

Roger Ebert: Two Thumbs Up!

Legendary film critic Roger Ebert keeps his spirits up and gives his patented two-thumbs up as he accepts the ShoWest Career Achievement in Film Journalism Award at the Paris Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada on Thursday (April 2).

The 66-year-old film icon has been battling thyroid cancer since 2002 and in 2006 had surgery to combat the cancer. The surgery saved his life, however, he lost his voice in the process.

Via email, he said, “I am in good health, and cancer-free. After major surgeries, I have lost the ability to speak, which I did a great deal of over the years at Boulder. … But I can’t complain.”

Also pictured below is actress Virginia Madsen with Roger.

Best wishes for health and happiness to Roger!

Wow! He surely looks weird! It doesn’t even look like him anymore.
I wonder if he can speak?

  • Raphael

It says he CAN’T speak, #1. But I wonder of he will ever regain his ability to do so.

  • [marie]

God Bless him. It’s scary how much his face has changed, but I bet he’d rather be alive than worry about how he looks.

  • gejwin

    Glad he’s doing well.

  • gross

how can he speak when he has fucking fish lips, disgusting old man, he thinks he looks good now that he has lip implants.

  • zzzz

Please, no mean comments here. The man had to have part of his jaw removed so he could live. Saying he looks weird is not cool.

  • zzzz

You, #5 are a sorry excuse for a human being. His face had to be reconstructed after cancer surgery, and I’m sure he’s not happy about it either.

  • just me

He looks fine. The man had cancer and had to have reconstructive surgery. He’s lucky to be alive.

  • NJ

#5 you are a waste of breath and space in this world. If you lived 10 lifetimes, you will not be of his courage and contribution to film.

  • raquel

#5 You are the biggest piece of low life S*** in the world. I hope what hapened to Roger doesn’t happen to someone in your family. You A****le!!

    #9 Well said!

The most wonderful man to have gone through so much and can still smile. God Bless Him!

  • Tulak

It is inspiring to see the spirit of life and the desire to survive and live

  • http://www.bloomacious.com carrie @ bloomacious.com

good for him that he still has the courage to make appearances – I miss his reviews and insight.

  • G

    What a survivor!

Stand up to cancer, everyone. It’s taken so, so many lives. I know Ebert doesn’t look like he once did, but he’s a survivor and his face shows that instead.

I’m glad he’s alive and pulling through.

    Keep it up!

  • marisa

i’m so proud of him. he’s doing well. #5 go to hell. seriously you have no consideration for anyone. rot. roger ebert is a legend, and whether you like it or not, that’s what he always will be. god bless him.

  • http://www.thatshideous.com that’s hideous

    love interracial couples :)

  • blair

that is so inspirational that he doesn’t let his awful disease keep him from living his life. i agree he doesn’t look the way he used to, but it shows true courage to come out and make appearances. he is such a survivor, i miss his truly enjoyable insights and reviews on the movies but i am glad he’s doing well after such a long fight with cancer.
    # 5, you are an inconsiderate douche bag. you have no respect for anyone, this man is a legend and a cancer survivor, and you need to learn to keep your rude and truly disgraceful “opinions” to yourself or perhaps go rot and die somewhere? that sounds nice :)
    thank you.

love you roger! continue fighting xoxo

  • lalalove

Cancer isn’t afraid to of anyone, no one is immune regardless of weath. He lost his ability to speak, but very grateful to be alive. He should be an example to us all. Let us all take a moment and be thankful, lets try to go through a day without complaining about how horrible our lives are.

    Lets ALL me thankful.
I also wish him happiness, and health. Thank goodness he’s still alive…

    Keep fighting Roger.

  • lalalove

    Keep inspiring us all, Roger.

    And at #5. Ugh…

how can he speak when he has ******* fish lips, disgusting old man, he thinks he looks good now that he has lip implants.
    =======================

You are a mean, hateful and vile person. To speak of someone who has suffered through cancer and survived, makes you too low to be considered a human being; there is NO humanity in you. Maybe you’re too ignorant to know what cancer is and what it can do to a person’s body. As disgusting as YOU are, I hope you never have to suffer as this man obviously has.

  • Marieme

    Oh Roger…..I <3 You.

I seriously love this man. He’s such a beautiful writer and I so enjoy reading his reviews – the old ones as well as the new ones. In fact I urge anyone who loves film to go to his website and read a review of your favorite movie. I bet you’ll learn something you hadn’t seen or noticed before and you’ll definitely be moved by reading Roger’s poetic and intelligent analysis. You know I actually have written to him with questions about certain films and he always responded. Lately, I’ve just sent notes of support and encouragement. Such a national treasure.

  • Marieme

Ohmigod, Jaye #19. That person is pure evil.

Nice to know such hateful people are walking this earth. No doubt they are miserable cowards with no friends who come on the internet to find an easy target on which to spew their ugly hate.

So glad sick minds like this will get what they put out in the end. Just as it should be. So yeah, gross, you are the epitome of your name.

  • chloe

What a strong man. Thyroid cancer is particularly difficult to treat (because that’s where a lot of your hormones are produced), and I’m glad that he has improved greatly. It’s so sad that he can no longer speak, but to live through it all…perhaps it is a small price to pay.

STAND UP MONGOLS WHO EVEN GET PAID!!

  • Ed

i used to watch his show. i do miss him. hope he’s doing better.
feel sorry for mother, #5. she gave birth to a piece of $hit.

  • What??

:( what a survivor, poor Roger. But, it shows the true strenght of his character.

  • YES!

Glad to hear he’s doing well.
I wish the doctors did a better job and spared his voice, but at least he’s cancer free.
    My best wishes!

  • LolaSvelt

Poor man. Glad that he’s well, though.

  • fresh

i love roger. its tough seeing him like that though.

  • Patty

If you’re here to honor Roger, pay no attention to people who post knew-jerk gossip posts about his appearance. He wouldn’t.

Nice to see His Greatness out and about with his lovely wife.

  • bella

OMG, it does not even look like him anymore. Glad to see he is doing well however and is cancer free.

  • gross

stfu fucking retards. If you feel so sorry for him go and help him out in some way, your stupid posts will not help him in any way. He is an ugly mean piece of shit that spent his life criticizing people’s hard work. Wow he’s done so much for humanity. Die you fucking piece of shit and take all those idiot fans of yours with u!

  • http://egotastic.com lakers fan in boston

i had no idea he even had cancer
really sad i use 2 watch when he critiqued movies, he was pretty funny if i remember right

@5, i think u must have not known he had cancer, since i also thought the same thing until i read what jared posted
that is i hope, if not ur a douche

  • mEEE

For all you that miss his great reviews (to this day, I refuse to see a film until I read his reviews), you can read them at http://www.rogerebert.com. He also keeps a blog, which shows that although he has lost his ability to speak, he will never lose his voice!

  • “gross” is a moron

Gross # 5, you are not only a piece of sh#t, you are a moron. Critics like Ebert are doing thier JOB! The public wants to know a critic”s opinion, for better or worse, and he is one of the best. Sounds to me like you’re a bitter, unemployed B-lister whose one film got canned by Ebert. You deserve to be as miserable as you are.

Bless you , Roger, you have tremendous strength and courage to survive and keep your chin up. You are a role model for us all!

  • “fu”, get educated

There is no evidence that Ebert’s cancer was caused by anything specific, including smoking. Look at Dana Reeve, who died from lung cancer and wasn’t a smoker. Cancer is not yet fully understood by doctors.

  • rAQUEL

#20. Thanks for the information on Roger’s website. Will make it my business to check it out. If I can’t hear his reviews, then I’ll be able to read them.

God Bless him and God Bless his wife. She’s an amazing woman who has been with him throughout.

It’s amazing that JARED is moderating one of my comments ( I’m still waiting for it to post), but he will let crap like THIS be posted.

  • ****

Since when does thyroid cancer change you into a Muppet?

  • http://righteous.bz/ MMA

    He looks way different!

  • Otter

    @gross: AMEN!!

  • Btaylor

well i would rather die than appear in public looking like that..he is not lucky to be alive he is cursed he survived..hollywood has no compassion for the ‘unpretty’..tho from the look of him..he does not have much longer to live..poor soul..he was once rotund and santa looking..now he looks freakish..

  • MJ

Wow, he looks a LOT different than what I remember him as when he and Richard Roeper used to host “At The Movies.” He looks very frail now, but he can still write and publish some of the best movie reviews in the industry!

  • LifeIsShort

Having just lost a friend to cancer last week (39 yr old mother of 3), it is wonderful to see the survivor story of Roger Ebert. Your spirit is unbelievably inspirational, Roger. I admire you! The world is lucky to have you. Thank you for everything you’ve given and continue to give to this world.

#5 – I feel sorry for you. Literally, I pity you. What is going on in your life that you have the need or instinct to be so awful, inhumane, and incredibly shallow? What are you, 11? Nevermind, that’s an insult to 11 year olds. (love #24′s comment. So true.)

    Rock on, Roger!

  • Barabara, an RN

Pay attention, you guys who continue to use chewing tobacco, because you get the same surgery – a radical neck dissection. Of course Ebert will never speak again, his larynx as been removed along with his jawbone on the left and most of every other thing in that vicinity. Cigar smokers and others are just as bad.

  • Smithy

Roger Ebert had a sickness. He battled it and, so far, is winning. Good for him. #5 has a sickness as well, trolling is a disease. What concerns me is how easy it is for people to chastise and make fun of him, calling him names, and somehow it is okay. Leave Roger AND #5 alone.
