Countries to mark World Refugee Day with a dizzying array of events

GENEVA, June 15 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency and its supporters around the world pay tribute this week to the courage and resilience of millions of people forced to flee their homes by conflict and persecution.

World Refugee Day (WRD), which falls every June 20, is also a big opportunity for the UNHCR to spread awareness about refugees and other displaced people and to raise funds for our major operations and emergencies in places like Afghanistan, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq and neighbouring countries, Pakistan and Sudan.

Headquarters and field staff have been planning for World Refugee Day for months and have prepared a wide range of activities focusing on this year’s theme of “Real People, Real Needs” and including light shows, film screenings, photography exhibitions, lectures, panel discussions, food bazaars, fashion shows, cultural performances, concerts and sports contests. There will also be quizzes, drawing and essay-writing competitions, tree planting, seminars, workshops, speeches, public awareness campaigns and poetry recitals.

UNHCR partners, including governments, donors, non-governmental organizations, Angelina Jolie and our other committed Goodwill Ambassadors will be doing their part to help, and refugees in camps and centres around the world will participate while enjoying much needed recognition.

This year, the main focus of UNHCR’s activities during WRD and the week leading up to it will be in the United States, the biggest donor to the agency. High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres will be in America all week.

Tomorrow, he will be at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. to meet journalists and present UNHCR’s “2008 Global Trends” – an eagerly waited annual compilation of statistics on the number of refugees, internally displaced people, stateless people and others of concern to the agency.

On Thursday, Guterres will attend the annual public ceremony for World Refugee Day at the National Geographic Museum in Washington. A number of high-profile guests are expected to appear with the High Commissioner, while the event will be led by CNN journalist Anderson Cooper. Participants will hear from a couple originating from Bhutan who were resettled in the United States after spending years in a refugee camp in eastern Nepal.

This showpiece event will also feature winning entries for a World Refugee Day poster contest under the patronage of Angelina Jolie, who has made a special WRD public service announcement that will be seen on the Internet as well as in airports, public transport and TV stations around the world. Elementary, middle and high school students were invited to design a poster around the “Real People, Real Needs” theme.

It’s not a matter of showing off. She was chosen to ber embassador for those reasons. To raise awareness you have to show your face. There is no other way. She is a compassionate person and if she did it just for play it wouldn’t be already 8 years she is working for the UHNCR. It’s since 2001. If it was a game she would be fed up. Introduction

I was asked to write an introduction to my journals, to explain how my journals came to be, why my life took this direction, and why I decided to start it.

As I try to find the answers, I am sure of one thing: I am forever changed. I am so grateful I took this path in my life, thankful that I met these amazing people and had this incredible experience.

I honestly believe that if we were all aware, we would all be compelled to act.

So the question is not how or why I would do this with my life. The question is, how could I not?

Many nights I sat awake reading stories and statistics about national and international tragedies.

I read about UNHCR:

• More than twenty million refugees exist today.
• One-sixth of the world’s population lives on less than one dollar a day.
• 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water.
• One-third of the world has no electricity.
• More than 100 million children are out of school.
• One in six children in Africa dies before the age of five.

I read about different organizations that do humanitarian work. I had been reading about Sierra Leone when I was in England. When I got back to the States it was difficult to follow the stories, so I called USA for UNHCR and asked if they could help me understand the situation there and similar situations elsewhere in the world. Three weeks later I was in Sierra Leone.

I don’t know how this will be as a book, how readers will find it. I am not a writer. These are just my journals. They are just a glimpse into a world that I am just beginning to understand, a world I could never really explain in words.

The dedication to her craft that garnered Angelina an Academy Award for her performance in Girl, Interrupted (1999), is reflected in her efforts for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a UN agency that currently assists 20 million refugees in approximately 120 countries.

Angelina’s involvement with UNHCR began with a mission to Sierra Leone, a small African country that – like the Democratic Republic of the Congo – has been devastated by years of brutal civil war. Seeing firsthand the enormous challenges that refugees face was a life-altering experience for Angelina, who decided to use her fame to aid their cause. In 2001, she was named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.

Although only 28, Angelina’s acting career has already spanned two decades. Her first feature role was in Lookin’ to Get Out (1982), a film co-written and co-produced by her father, the acclaimed actor Jon Voight. I hate it when people bring up Ethan Hawke cheating on Uma Thurman. I like Uma, but she’s a case of “What goes around comes around”. Uma is a serial relationship-breaker upper just like Laura Dern. When she was fairly young – 20-ish – she cheated with Gary Oldman and ultimately was name co-respondent in his wife’s divorce papers. Olman and his wife had a kid. The reason why Brad should not be mentioned is because Brad is not the ambassador. Although he is the partner of Angelina, Brad would look like he is coattailing Angelina’s popularity. In other words they are two individuals and it does not mean that when Angelina gets credits it’s automatically credited to Brad too. What I mean is give credit to where credit is due. Just like when you do something that needs to be appreciated we would not mention your husband/wife for that credit. Get my point? I remember as a young girl my mother taking my sisters & I -2 visit children in orphanages, children camps, some were filled with the elderly, all poor, places in the US& elsewhere.

1 particular place My mama would park the car & we’d trudge down a hill where the rutted road wore itself out & walk down a dirt road- my hands would become sweaty, Id feel nervous-anxious.

Among members of any society they are the ones who can be overlooked, demeaned -treated as non-persons with the greatest ease and with the greatest frequency. They have no power, so No significance.

Orphans/refugee’s can & are deprived consistently of justice. This is why the poor, parentless -those who lack parental protection either through abandonment, abuse or death ect, are at the endangered
list. By definition, among all the “needy in the land” they are the littlest, the weakest, the poorest, the most desperately vulnerable. Not only must they do without food or money, they lack something more basic, the comfort, nurture and protection of family,parents. They are not only destitute physically & economically, but socially & psychologically as well.

She worked with the displaced people in New Orleans and there have been reports that that she and Brad bought books, chairs and desks for school children in NewOrleans too ( if your country is the U.S. – that is).

Thank you very, very much, Brisels, for pointing out this fact. There are multiple religions in the world, and each one of them teach their followers to be good people / citizens / human beings.

I am not a Christian, but I still respect AJ for everything that she had done, is doing and will be doing in future.

Why do the haters not believe in AJ turning her wild ways into becoming a better, respectable person? After witnessing what the unfortunates had to go through to just live another day in their lives, she changed for the better. She had 2 choices: she can either continue with her wild child ways and turn the other way (and be a HW snob like so many others) or to try and help those people. And she chose the better way. She saw the difference between her life and theirs. She had everything but they, none. But, having nothing do not mean that they don’t have their pride. They ran away to become refugees because of their pride. They do not want to follow the terrorists’ way of life (by hurting, mangling and killing other human beings).

By helping the refugees, AJ is also giving them hope, something that they might thought was / is impossible..

And for that, I respect AJ and salute her.

You will probably see it on CNN Thursday. It is a PSA, so the tv channels decide whether they want to show it. Since it is not a money making advertisement, a PSA does not get much air time. I saw last year’s PSA on CNN.

Her decision to adopt came from her desire to mother these children and to save them from possible death. If she used her father to be the reason why she adopts, it’s impossible that she could love these children like her own. Adopting kids is not a joke, it does not only involve money but more it involves love and protection. Ask any parent who had adopted kids, 100% they will tell you that they love the adopted children equally with their bio kids. My parents had an adopted child and believe it or not they treated and love her like she came from the bodies. So your allegation is precisely wrong.

They had a 54 year-old woman who was dressing in the same type man-catching clothes as her 34 y.o. daughter – low cut shirts/dresses with the boobs hanging out. The woman said she was dressing that way because men she was interested in dating – mid-40s to 50s…were asking her daughter out…and the daughter said she didn’t think her mother should be interested in the same age-range of men SHE was interested in. When Angelina Jolie came into the room, just four days after returning from Namibia, she was alone. No handlers, no entourage. True, elaborate precautions had been made to make sure no photographers followed her to the hotel where we met, but there she was, by herself, walking into the hotel suite, smiling, ready to talk.

There are a lot of ridiculous stories circling on the Internet, spread by alleged “insiders” who claim that CNN or its parent company Time Warner somehow paid for the chance to talk to Angelina. These anonymous “sources” claim that People Magazine and CNN had some kind of joint deal to secure rights to photos and the interview.

I have no idea what People Magazine did or did not pay for those photos of the Jolie-Pitt family. It’s been reported they paid as much as $4 million, which was donated to a variety of charities in Africa, but I have no way of knowing if that is true or not. What I do know is that CNN did not pay anything — directly or indirectly — to get Angelina Jolie to sit down for an interview.

So why did she do it? And why talk to me?

Both are valid questions. I’m sure there were plenty of news programs requesting interviews with Angelina Jolie. The truth is, mine wasn’t one of them. They called us. I was told that they were aware of my interest in Africa and knew that as a broadcast we have devoted a lot of time to reporting stories from the continent.

Tuesday is World Refugee Day. Angelina Jolie was interested in discussing the plight of refugees, so we sat down to talk about what she has seen and learned in refugee camps around the world. She had no movie to promote, no product she was pitching. In fact, I have no idea what her next movie is and we did not discuss any upcoming films. There were no ground rules. I was free to ask whatever I wanted.

A lot of celebrities have causes and show up to talk about them when cameras are around, but the truth is that Angelina Jolie knows what she is talking about when the subject is refugees. To use a cliche, she doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk. She has traveled to some 20 countries over the years as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and she says she donates one-third of her income to charitable causes.

I’m not sure what I expected before I met her, but to say I was impressed would be an understatement. She is smart, funny, self-deprecating, and intensely passionate about her children and her work on behalf of refugees.

Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET, you will hear Angelina Jolie talk about some of the experiences in refugee camps that have changed her life. Yes, you will also learn about Angelina’s family — Maddox and Zahara as well as Shiloh Nouvel — but the focus of the interview is the plight of refugees. During the two-hour program, we will take you to the frontlines of some of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.

Sweden, Norway, Austria and Germany proportionately come out ahead of Canada as developed-world destinations for people uprooted by war or discrimination, according to the UN refugee agency’s 2008 Global Trends.

But it also shows that many of the world’s 42 million refugees are now trying to settle in emerging economies, as developed countries tighten acceptance rules.

South Africa receives a quarter of all applications — the most of any country.

In a video Tuesday, actress Angelina Jolie highlights the plight of refugees in camps and other facilities in developing countries, which host 80 per cent of the total. She calls them the “most vulnerable people on earth.”

Jolie, whose six children with actor Brad Pitt include three adopted in the developing world, urges viewers not to look away as images cross the screen of refugees.

While the United States is far down the per-capita scale for accepting refugees, it remains the developed world’s biggest recipient of displaced people because of its size.

It hosted almost 350,000 last year, while Canada — whose population is about 10 times smaller — hosted almost 228,000.

Most of the world’s refugees were in Pakistan, which hosted 1.8 million. Next was Syria, with 1.1 million, followed by Iran with 980,000.
