Daniel Radclife: I Loathe Homophobia

Daniel Radclife: I Loathe Homophobia

Daniel Radcliffe takes the August 2009 cover of UK’s premiere gay glossy, Attitude Magazine, even though he isn’t gay and is dating actress Laura O’Toole.

Daniel, who turned 20 yesterday, talks about how he grew up surrounded by his parents’ gay pals and hates anyone with a homophobic attitude.

“I just loathe homophobia,” Daniel shared. “It’s just disgusting and animal and stupid and it’s just thick people who can’t get their heads around it and are just scared. I grew up around gay people entirely. I was the only child in my class who had any experience of homosexuality or anything like that.”

Daniel‘s latest movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Price is in theaters now!

Think he’s great young man and does a great job in harry potter!

  • lol

So what experience of homosexuality did he have then?

I think the young man protest too much.

  • tms

he’s funny lookin when not in potter mode

  • f

    yea! i hate it to!

now wait for the homophobes to come one here………

  • minh

    LOVE DANIEL. forever and always

  • austin

He is definatley gay himself to say something like that. I hope he gets the guts to come out of the closet soon.

  • Megan Fox

If he’s not gay, hes probably bi…. and most good looking young men are bi in some way. James Dean was bi/gay… yes, go check that out on Wikipedia!

  • L

Just because he is disgusted by homophobia doesn’t make him gay. Look at all the actors and actresses out there who protest against Prop 8. I think he’s right. People are pathetic if they can’t accept each other as equals and they’re nothing but close-minded if they single out those who are gay.

  • Halli

His whole comment about “I grew up with gay people entirely”… Really Harry, You only grew up around gays?

And his other comment, “I was the only child in my class who had any experience of homosexuality”.

Reeeeaaaaaallllyyyy?? Gosh Dan, thanks for your wisdom!

Look, I get what he’s saying, but he’s like those annoying little kids from elementary school who brag on and on about how much they know things and you don’t! Its all so childish.

  • deraj tsuj

    i thought he was gay

  • me

Dan’s awesome and so SEXY! And it makes sense for him to have grown up around homosexuals. He’s been in show business since he was like 8 years old.

And I agree…homophobia is dumb! Everyone should have the same rights regardless of how different they are.

You ROCK Dan!! Happy Birthday!! :D

  • alex

I’m assuming he means he’s just been around it alot since he was just on Broadway and his parents are also in the entertainment business.
DanRad is pretty cool. Homosexuality is not something I fully understand, but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve respect.

  • celia

Dan just said in an interview that he thinks it’s awesome that some people think he’s Gay.
Because he, “likes to keep them guessing.” But he’s definitely straight. You can tell that by all of his interviews. This guy loves his women and he’s such a charmer.

I just want to grab him and make out with him. i can’t believe he’s already 20 years old.

  • hmm ?

    He looks pretty hot

  • SouthAfricanGirl

    I can’t stand Harry Potter!!!
But totally approve of this comment!
    Down with homophobs!!!

  • ann

He says he’s not gay but what “straight” guy writes sex letters to his co-star and what “straight” guy wants to dress in drag. He’s probably bi.

  • Freud says hi!

All people who dislike gay people are totally gay themselves. It’s called defense mechanism… ;-)

  • LolaSvelt

I like how he isn’t afraid to air his views on homophobic because it’s a tough world. I too, loathe homophobia and good on him for covering a gay magazine!

  • LolaSvelt

  • t

good for him for standing up for something for solely the sake of other people

  • soly

I for one iam a supporter of the gay community , I am not gay but I support all kinds of people who fight for their right to be happy with who ever I for once and extremely glad daniel supports them as well as I do because iam a great fan of his….

  • AllForYouSophia

Oh geez, either you are homophobic which makes you the devil, or you “loathe homophobia” which means you’re gay? I don’t get it. Can’t you be straight and hate homophobia? Is that combination not possible at all? Is the choice gay or homophobic? I don’t get it…

  • Gina

    Way to go Dan!

@ #16 (ann): what’s this “sex letters to his co-star” story about??

  • kamilah

@L: i agree with you!! accepting people who are gay doesnt automatically mean your are gay too. as a straight person myself, nothing irritates me more than homophobic people.

  • vmars111

    That’s the spirit, Daniel!

Even as I typed that, it sounded British.

  • jonharules

My friend has just told me he’s gay and it’s funny how he hates them. Well I don’t hate bis, I just don’t think they should give up their natural state too easily. haha

Well I love DanR, he’s awesome and hope to watch more of his films. :)

  • whortensia

Trannydanny loves gay people and he adores trannies too. He can’t wait to play a transvestite and wear drag, he has said. And oh yes, nothing is more flattering, he has said, than to have a gay guy fall in love with you. I begin to suspect Laura ia his beard and from the looks of his face he needs one. Trannydan is just a bit toooooo liberal about sex for my taste and he better finish those Pottering movies before somebody outs him.

  • whortensia

@Gina: When he was acting in Equus on Broadway he said he wrote some love letters to the guy who played his horse to “get him worked up” before the performance. He then said that IF he were gay he’d marry that guy right away because he was so gorgeous. Hmmmmmm……….you didn’t see all that???????

  • whortensia

But he’s definitely straight. You can tell that by all of his interviews………!!!??? Hmmm you think he would come out and say he is gay in an interview? Wise up my dear. A gay guy in the movie roles he plays isn’t going to say he is anything but straight or his career is finished. He talks a lot about gays, and trannies, and drag and eye makeup, etc., etc. I find it odd that he seems so involved in all that. Emma Watson, for example, doesn’t go on and on and on about lesbianism, does she? Or Rupert Grint?

  • safiyah

beleyted happy birthday harry i mean daniel jacob

  • NativeNYker

And the gays LUV him for speaking up!

    Rants, Thoughts & Merde

  • Vicki

Whys he dating that ugly bitch?

And yes Dan, I agree with you.

  • me

Hmmm…then we know he’s Straight. Guys who are insecure about their sexuality would NEVER do something like that.

Dan’s awesome!! He’s written some amazing poetry under the pen name of JACOB GERSON! :D

  • natt

At last someone have eyes regarding homosexuality. Thank God!! Gay is not the way! But i don’t hate though but i really depise such actions because some Gays ruin marriage and relationships!

  • jorja

didn’t he break up with that awful cow???

  • mertz

I’m not into harry potter the movie franchise but i do know that i love this dude. go daniel. happy bday and do make say whatever you want to. lol. i love the way british people speak. i mean their use of language whether it’s insulting or not is so base and unsullied/comes with no trappings. love it. go british english. lol. i wonder if the oxford english dicitionary is going to go out of print anytime soon. probably not. they have a good website and upkeep of all their words.

  • whortensia

@me: I don’t agree. He could be testing the waters so to speak, for a out coming. He seems fixated on sex in what he says unlike Grint or Watson who seem more normal. Ever hear Watson go on and on and on about lesbians? And his poem is embarrassingly bad, about a guy and a whore, pretentious and phony (except it might suggest he knows quite a bit about whores).

  • whortensia

@mertz: Trannydan is middle class British and his speech reflects that. It is not upper class speech (like the royals and others whom you can hear at times). Actually standard American speech is closer to upper class British speech than it is to what Dan speaks. The Oxford Dictionary applies to American English as much as to English English. There isn’t any real difference except in accents, and some expressions. Dan can speak “American” when he tries. For him it is a different accent from his natural one.

  • me

He doesnt go on and on about Gay people. They ask him a question and he answers it. Considering he was on Broadway for like 5 months…I’m sure that community (which has a lot of Gay people) had some kind of effect on him. And alot of the actors he met while he was doing Equus have commented on how much they love Dan. I just think he’s awesome and everyone (Gay, Straight, or Transsexual) can see that.

I don’t think I read the same poem you did…I read one about Pete Doherty and one about Simon Cowell. He wrote them when he was only 17, so I think they’re pretty good.

  • i n f a m o u s l y c o o l

    i loathe katherine ugheigl. hahahahahahahaha

  • missy

of course he’s straight, Right! he just play straight in the movies!

  • whortensia

@me: He talks about gays and so on quite a bit. You just haven’t paid attention. He also talks about trannies, and drag queens, etc., his first sexual experience, dating older women, not being able to find a girl friend (this is a load of crap since he has had one for some time), etc. He seems sex obsessed compared, say, to Emma Watson or Grint. The poem I read was published in the Daily Mail (UK) and it was very immature and adolescent. I think Trannydanny’s financial success in films may have given him an exaggerated idea of his capabilities. He thinks now that he is a real poet. What next? Rocket scientist? LOL

  • whortensia

@me: Let me sum up my opinion of him. He was perfect in David Copperfield, his first acting job and his all time best. Since then he has done well in (1) the skit as a sex crazed Boy Scout in Extras; (2) as John Kipling. His performance in December Boys was okay but the movie bombed because nobody could understand the Australian accents. His Harry Potter films are just so so with regard to him since they are 90% special effects and 10% acting. I never saw him on stage in Equus. Critics liked him. It remains to be seen what he can do after HPotter. Can he rise to the level of Heath Ledger or will he bump along as just a jobbing actor who is competent but no more. Time will tell. Meanwhile I would like to know of some substantial charity on his part from his vast earnings. I haven’t heard of any at all. He odes spend millions on New York city real estate that goes unoccupied or perhaps rented out.

  • Jen Z.

@jorja: I also thought they broke up also. I read that a quote that Laura supposedly said about how she “knew the break-up was bound to happen “. They maybe a on & off again type of couple.

  • whortensia

@Jen Z.: I don’t think there has been any “off”. When interviewed Dan says he doesn’t want to talk about her. I think he has sent up smoke screens about the relationship to keep it out of the news. He says he is looking for a girl friend, etc., etc., when he really isn’t. It’s all cover up crap. She has been his “girl” now for a couple of years, ever since he did Equus in London.

  • whortensia

He started to see her when he did Equus in London and she was an understudy in the role of the girl. She said they have a “good time” when they are together but since she has her own career they can’t be together all the time. She went with him and his parents to lunch for his 19th birthday. She came to New York to visit him when he was in Equus there. Grint says they are fine as a couple. In short, the relationship has been going on for several years. And probably still is. (Nobody knows what he did for his 20th birthday, do they?).

  • Ari

I totally and completely agree with you…homophobia is just wrong and stupid. I thought we were past discrimination and eliminating rights! And just because you support gay rights doesn’t mean you’re gay! C’mon people!

  • lakers fan in boston

i dont understand why he’s so fasicinated with gays
that’s all i ever hear him talk about
1st about trannies, then u talked about how he kinda like being called gay, and now this….
find something new 2 talk about buddy, ur boring
if u, urself r gay, which i suspect with all the talking u do about it, then just come out

  • twifanatic Amanda

That’s good of him. Homophobia iratates me to no end.

  • UGH

He really needs to stop talking. He is trying to legimitize himself as a “serious” actor but all he likes talking about is peen.
