Michael Vick Blogs Apology For Dog Fighting

New Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has taken to Russell Simmons’ hip-hop community site Global Grind to blog an apology for participating in an illegal dog fighting ring. Here’s the “What I Did Was Horrendous” entry he wrote after serving 18 months in prison:

“I’m sorry. That’s the place where I need to begin. My feeling of remorse. I ain’t never written a blog before, so putting my thoughts down on paper is a challenge – however it’s a challenge I must face. I can look a 250 pound linebacker in his eyes at the line of scrimmage and have no fear. But expressing myself when I know that there are millions of people who are so angry with me, and rightfully so, is a challenge unlike any other I have faced before.

“What I did was horrendous. Awful. Inhumane. And I’ve no excuses for my actions. It makes my heart hurt now to think about what I’ve done. And I’m gonna be real honest, it took a while for me to get to this place.”

“Sitting in a prison cell didn’t make me feel remorse. It was meeting so many animal lovers, speaking with them and looking them in their eyes. Staring at them. Looking so deep into their eyes that I began to feel their pain. Allowing that pain to enter into my body is when I started to understand how bad it really was. I have been trying hard to connect with people who feel this pain, because for my whole life I was disconnected from the suffering of animals. And you might say, “come on Mike, how could you do those things to those dogs?” And you’re right…I ask myself those questions every day. What kind of person does this? How does a human-being treat dogs or any animal with such pain and cruelty? And the hard part for me is the answer to these questions. Because the answer is ME. And I am trying so hard right now to become a better person, because who I was, I am ashamed of.

“Cause see, my whole life has been numb. I was numb to the violence in my community…cause I saw it all the time, ever since I was a child. I mean, how does one grow up in a city that’s nickname is Bad Newz? You can probably guess that from the jump, ya’ know I’ve seen some bad things in my life. And football was the only way that I could escape. As a kid, I even used to go out fishing, and most of the times I wouldn’t catch a darn thing, but just needed to get away from the chaos every once in a while. So, when the commissioner called my name as the #1 draft pick in the NFL – the first time a black quarterback had ever been chosen as the #1 pick, I thought my life was all good. But, what I didn’t realize then, that I have begun to realize now, is that even though I had more money in my pocket, big cars and big houses, I was still numb. And when I say numb, I ain’t talkin about not realizing the stuff that was going on around me, it was just like I was living life asleep. However, that is still no excuse for what I did. But let’s not forget that there are still hundreds of thousands of young people growing in similar environments and seeing violence at a young age has severe consequences.

“Now that I’m trying my best to wake up, I know I have a lot of work to do. And this isn’t about trying to win a Super Bowl ring or a MVP trophy…this is about trying to save lives. I think back to when I use to play football and of course I use to see all those kids in the stands wearing #7 jerseys. And I would never want them to look up to the Michael Vick who did all of those terrible things to the dogs. I know where I need to do the most work is with all of the people around the world who continue to fight dogs. Let me be straight forward with y’all: What I did was wrong, and what you’re doing is wrong. We must stop dog fighting, and I will do everything in my power to be a voice of someone who has finally woken up from the numbness, and knows just how bad it really is. My mission now is to be a source of service to save many animals. I am working very closely with The Humane Society and will be launching a new campaign shortly. If I had one hope in life, it would be that my actions will speak louder than my words. I know it will be hard to forgive me until you see my sincerity through my actions, but I promise you and I promise myself that that day will come.

“Lastly, I accept this challenge, not of writing this blog, but of redeeming myself.”

The only thing he’s sorry about is what he did to his career.

Yea im sure the only word actually written by him in that blog is “ain’t”

White people love making love to animals. I mean, they love animals too much. All MV needed was a huge fine. But he got sent to prison instead. It’s sad how whites view animals as being more valuable, than HUMANS.

*I do not promote no r care for football, other sports, or Michael Vick*

Any animal lover out there should boycott the Philly Eagles, it’s the decent thing to do. F.u.c K him okay. No one who ever had or would have compassion for animals could ever do such a thing. I don’t for a minute believe this man has any remorse for his actions.

  • Hank

@MeriBilson: —-Animal OR Human, It takes a sick person to to this kind of thing, Black OR White, PERIOD.
    There is NO exuse

  • Gad zooks

Boycott this hump and everything he is affiliated with.

MeriBilson, how very racist of you. Have you no compassion?

  • MeriBilson

@EFF YOU: Racist? I love making love to white men. But it’s the truth. These peta/animal lovers folks are mostly wp.

  • brangelina fan 4 life

Apology accepted. I think it was horrible what he was involved in however we find more problem with dogs in pain than starving kids. That is a fact. Where is the outrage when people beat their kids, etc? Animal cruelty is terrible but children are more important than animals. My opinion and I am sticking to it. And how long is this guy supposed to apologize for? Seriously. How long? Enough is enough. He served the time and now done. Is he supposed to serve life in prison for it? Whereas a rapist gets out in 5 years. Give it up people. It’s done! Ok, rant over. lol

  • Catalina

As horrendous his acts were and as much as I hate the fact that he is back in the NFL, there is a part of me that says people deserve second chances. I guess time will tell if he is truly remorseful.

  • brangelina fan 4 life

PETA went to an elementary school and showed kids picturs of dead chickens to force them to give up eating chicken. PETA is a mess! Crazy people. I love animals and was raised with them but if a kid is starving, I would give the kid food before a dog. Sorry. People first. At least we have the brains to try to save animals whereas what can animals do for us in emergency situations? They can’t find cures for cancer. We can. Rant over….I think…lol.

  • brangelina fan 4 life

And all of you attacking Vick ( and yes he was worng) should give up your Big Macs, your ribs, your chicken cutlets, yoru mascaras (they use animal stuff), your leather clothes. ALL OF IT. Come one! Be fore real. Walk the walk. Give it all up before attacking dog fighters. And hunters? Cheney was a hunter. Sarah Palin shoots animals. Boycott them too. Send Palin to jail too. What is the difference? Stop the hypocrisy.

  • sillyme

I have no problem with him going back to football…it’s the Eagles who will have to live with that. It’s one thing to indulge in dog fighting. It’s quite another to execute and torture animals for fun. He can apologize all he wants, but this man has an evil heart.

  • lakers fan in boston

i really think ppl are making a humongous deal out of it
some players kill somebody while drinking and driving and comeback to the nfl, and dont get that much, altho they’re not that famous as mike
as a dogowner myself, i thought it was a horrible thing, and i still think it is
but it’s not like he got away with it
he actually went to jail unlike some other football players
not only that but he probably wont even get to play that much with mcnabb as their main guy

We are talking about animal abuse here, is this not a weighty enough issue that you have to bring up child abuse as well? Trust me, be it domestic violence, child or animal abuse, there will be people who will be enraged. In no way does intolerance for animal abuse = okay with human abuse! Stick to the topic for crying out loud.

  • MIssy

U guys need to get yourselves some lives. You’re much worse then someone involved in dog fighting. This is a human being (WAY more significant then a dog, need I remind you)..and if he is apologizing and has stopped that behavior and working towards ending it for others, then shut your stupid holes and move on!

  • lydia

    brangelina fan 4 life……..

No one said anything about feeding animals over children.

Your mental reasoning powers are discombobulated.

Animals have saved humans in distress. Your faculties are missing some important links. Goofy talk from you.Maybe you’re on drugs or drunk!

  • lydia

I don’t know if his change in character is genuine or not. For his sake(karma) and for the sake of animals…..lets hope it is genuine.

Some of you posters on here are very unforgiving and yet may call yourselves Christians. Don’t forget God’s injunctions about forgiveness!

  • yuck

there are people who’ve done worse.

  • Joy

It is not only white people that love animals. Look at Oprah and many others. What has being white or black got to do with caring for animals and not wanting to hurt them. That’s a human feeling and doesn’t only apply to white or black. Get a clue. If you’re not part of the cure, you’re part of the problem.

Yes, yes, there are people who have done worse, shall we just bring up all the ills and evil of the world? This thread is about Michael Vick, defend him all you, exercise your freedom of speech, and while you’re at it, I would like to condemn him all I want and encourage all others to join in.

  • brangelina fan 4 life

lydia^^^i did not say anyone compared child abuse to animal abuse. i am bringing it up as a way to show we can give more importance to this issue over other issues. also, i said an animal cannot cure cancer, cannot operate on a dying person. they don’t have that ability. so their abilities are limited, yes, they have saved us in distressed situations but we can save them and us. whereas they can’t. go ahead and attack my “mental abilities”, personalize the issue. in return, i say to you stop wearing leather and eating big macs and boycott sarah palin then attack vick. walk the walk. then crucify the guy who served his prison time.

  • branglina fan is an idiot

Are you serious? That’s the dumbest thing I have ever heard. We are not comparing apples to oranges here. Stick to the facts, the point and the topic at hand.

  • LittleHaze

Good luck to him. Dog fighting stinks, but then I remember that dogs lick their own asses and eat their own shit and the less of that we have, the happier I am. Seriously people, it’s a dog. It’s not like he forced a bunch of disabled, foster kids to fight to the death. Move on and find another cause.
He served his time and paid his fines. It’s over. Time for football!!!! Can’t wait for him to get back on the field.

    TEAM VICK!!!!

  • yuck

you’re great and right. i’m ready for some football!!!
they should go after roman polanski. he never served a day in jail for raping a 13yr old girl but he made lots of movies and won academy awards for a job well done!!

  • K

He’s “sorry” he got caught. He’s “sorry” he went to jail. He’s “sorry” for this stigma he has as an animal killer now. He couldn’t even give a reason behind why he did what he did. I don’t accept his empty apologies. How can he do what he did and be sorry for it? Saying sorry isn’t enough.

MeriBilson: “White people love making love to animals.” Do you have factual information to back up idiotic comment or did you just have a dumb moment? The fact that you like to ‘make love to white men’ doesn’t make it okay to say that……but anyway….

MV took LIVES away from living beings. Once you take someones or somethings LIFE away, you are a murderer- no matter who or what it was. Do you even know the horrible things he did to these animals? It is just out of this world how someone can be so horrid, and cruel. If those animals were humans he’d never be out of jail. What does that tell you? He killed living beings who really couldn’t fight back or do anything to defend themselves.

I would never support the eagles anyway….but people who do definetly have something to think about. I am sure the teams sponsers can’t be happy.

  • wtf

f***ng liar. He’s just sorry he got caught. Otherwise he’s still be dogfighting.

  • Ella

This monster used to have a special pair of overalls he wore to torture and kill dogs, so he wouldn’t soil his clothes.

  • EW!

I HATE him… Definitley shunning the Eagles from now on… Disgusting!

  • Diana

I think what he did was disgusting and downright vile. However, there are athletes that rape, kill, steal, and violate HUMANS and people overlook this. Why can’t we give him another chance when people who kill humans are granted second chances everyday and no one seems to care. I have met people who value a dog’s life more than their own family members and friends. That seems a little strange to me. (And believe me I love my two pooches). I agree what he did was horrible but he needs to move on with his life. It’s just my opinion please don’t jump over me.

  • Sunshine

It was big of him to apology and only God can read his heart to know if it was sincere or not. He committed a crime and the law punished him for it just like other criminals (murderers, rapist, thieves, etc.). He has paid for his crime so he now deserves a chance to get his life back together. I’m happy he is getting a second chance to play football and I hope he does well.

  • divenuts

He makes me sick. I wish the NFL wouldn’t have reinstated him so quickly; why couldn’t the NFL have waited a year to see if he’s “changed” and to see if he is capable of doing good before he goes back to football.

  • tqueen101

i do not think that the egles should be punished for what one sick person did , but as a christian i forgive him but will forget what sick cruel thing he did and i hope he will be punished greatly .

  • dana1966

Oh, boo hoo to you Vick! You make me want to puke. I certainly thought the Eagles were a classier organization and was appalled when they signed him. He should have been made to sweat it out for a year or two before the NFL reinstated him. I believe in granting second chances, but let’s see what good he can accomplish before he is “forgiven”.

  • sara

Half of you couldn’t give a crap if a human was slaughteres or tortured but when dogs are involved you all freak out. He did a sick, disgusting thing but there are people who do worse all the time and no one seems to care at all. Who are some of you to be cursing people to hell?

  • jaye

For those of you SHOCKED by a mind who can think of dog fighting, it’s not a new ‘sport’. Dog fighting has probably been around thousands of years. It’s BIG in the U.S. and will probably always be. People who participate in dog fighting are very secretive about it; it might be your next door neighbor. You can’t judge someone by how they look as to what they will do.
He went to jail because he financed dog fighting and lied about it; not because he profited from it. However, there isn’t much difference, it’s a cruel sport. He’s paid his debt as prescribed by a court of law and should be allowed to have a 2nd chance. I never cared for the guy even before this revelation came out about him and still don’t, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s served his time. He will never be able to forget it and will have people constantly remind him of what he did. That’s the price he will always have to pay.

  • Marieme

That “60 Minutes” interview was outstanding and James Brown did a superb job holding Vick’s feet to the fire. Consequently I’m ready to let my own hatred of him go. I genuinely believe he is remorseful. He’s been behaving and talking like a real adult who accepts all responsibility for his disgusting behavior. At the same time I can’t help being totally disgusted myself with the behavior of many of his rabid supporters who have deemed his penalty as too harsh. There are far too many ignorant fcuks who don’t believe dogfighting is “all that bad.” Those are the kinds of idiots we have to deal with in this world, unfortunately.

  • Nancy

There’s a big difference between killing animals for food, and putting dogs in a ring and forcing them to fight to the death. Here’s a hint: one of those is essential for our survival. The training just to get those animals to that point also involves a lot of sacrifices of other, smaller, more vulnerable animals. And for what? Entertainment? Are you kidding me? I don’t agree with recreational hunting either.

I respect differing opinions, but I don’t respect ignorance. Please fix your logic and resubmit.

  • Ella

I hope Ron Mexico has a flare up every Sunday so bad he can’t stand it::0( Karma is a beytch..

  • Marieme

…And it wasn’t just the “60 Minutes” interview that changed my mind – though it was the tipping point. I am a member of HSUS and have been following Wayne Pacelle’s work with Vick. I’ve been watching and paying attention because I was crazy with anger over this. Btw for anyone who may have missed it here is a link to a searing piece about what happened to those pitbulls after being rescued. It’s an amazing story and heartbreaking all the same.

Nancy – Killing animals for food is essential for survival? Uh huh. I KNEW IT!!! Those fudge packing, PETA, vegetarian b1tches really are blood sucking vampires! They don’t eat a lick of meat and still keep ticking.

You’re a retard! Essential for survival?!?! Idiot.

  • Los Angeles Local

He paid his dues and apologized. That’s enough for me.
