Senator Ted Kennedy Dies At Age 77

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts died Tuesday night (August 25) at his home on Cape Cod after a year-long struggle with brain cancer at the age of 77.

Edward M. Kennedy, the husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle we loved so deeply, died late Tuesday night at home in Hyannis Port (Massachusetts),” the Kennedy family said in a statement early on Wednesday. “We’ve lost the irreplaceable center of our family. He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it.”

“An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States senator of our time,” President Obama said in a written statement.

Kennedy‘s memoir, True Compass, will be published in the fall.
