Drew Barrymore Parades To Find 'True Drew'

Whip It director/star Drew Barrymore opens up about the “true Drew” in the latest issue of Parade. Check out what the 34-year-old actress had to say:

On her seemingly carefree spirit: “I don’t know if I’m completely comfortable ever. Sometimes I can totally let go with complete abandon–sing and dance and run around and not care what people think about me. Still, there seems to be this ball of stress inside me that I can’t get rid of.”

On her own complicated mother/daughter story: “I believe she will see the film [Whip It]. I believe she does feel pride in me. I used to pull a lot emotionally from all the stuff with my family, but I did not do this movie to cleanse myself of the mother/daughter debacle that happened in my life. I have been much more objective about my childhood and my relationship with my mother in these last few years. I used to be more attached to all that. I won’t deny that the baggage was there at one point.”

On battling long-term sobriety: “No, I’m not [completely sober]. And I don’t claim to be — quite the opposite. I’ve tried to find the balance. I hope it’s balanced.”

On not being in a rush to find a mate: “Sexual love is secondary to me right now. I’ve spent a lot of time in my life dedicating myself to love or the pursuit of love or the understanding of love. But for the last few years, my life just hasn’t been about that for me. It’s just not about the mother baggage. It’s not about the boy. It’s about something completely different, and it’s very refreshing. I’m trying to understand it and relish it.”

Drew and Ellen Page’s upcoming roller derby film Whip It opens on Friday, October 2.

It’s always great to see people who come from a sad place make positive strides in their lives. Some people seem to never learn and grow from pain, but Drew is.

i saw Whip It! at TIFF and it was a lot of fun. Drew was hilarious and Ellen Page was great. Worth seeing. Even more surprising is that Kristen Wiig acted normal… and she’s quite a good actress.

This is one person I admire most most in Hollywood. Drew Barrymore is down to earth and unpretentious. She is not hypocrite. Despite her looks and prestigious Hollywood family background she was very relatable. And a survivor, She really is a role mode . She never let success goes to her head and destroys her. I love Drew Barrymore.

@lakers fan in boston:

Drew Barrymore looks old? In what universe? She is a 34 year old baby face and has hardly aged in a decade.

I lived in LA and can tell all of you this woman has the best reputation in Hollywood. She’s known as the nicest person in the business. Thank-you Drew. Long live your career and good luck to you!

I’ve been following her career since I took my kids to see the movie ET. She is an honest, talented and grounded young woman, and a great role model. She was awesome in “Grey Gardens.” Whip It” looks like fun. I used to watch roller derby as a kid on TV in the early sixties.
