Hold on, President Obama. I know you just won the Nobel Peace Prize, and I’ma let you finish. But, what, was that Nobel Prize Committee on crack or somethin? Dag, you weren’t even president for two weeks when you were nominated.

Oh, and don’t forget to thank eight years of Bush for this, too!

If you take the time to actually read the announcement, you’ll see the exact reasoning behind their decision. It is to do with Obama’s approach to international relations SINCE becoming president.
It makes perfect sense and their decision should be applauded.

Please see full text copied below.

‘The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.

‘The Committee has attached special importance to Obama’s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

‘Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics.

‘Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play.

‘Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts.

‘The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations.

‘Thanks to Obama’s initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting.

‘Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

‘Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future.

‘His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.

‘For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world’s leading spokesman.

‘The Committee endorses Obama’s appeal that ‘Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.”

Speech by Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Thorbjørn Jagland.

He got the award because of his approach? What about all the people who have actually DONE something. What a joke this peace prize has become.

  • dabu

Well, Catalina, who do you think should have won? Many thought the woman from Kenya that won for planting trees should not have. It is always a controversial choice somewhere in the world.

There is another big piece of news today that Keira Knightley is going to debut in a play at the West End theatre in December. Since you seem to be promoting actors who take to the stage, why not announce this piece of entertainment news?

  • Lucas

    @helen w.:
got to agree with you there. her good reason is likely that Liam thinks twitter is dumb.
although I’m not real keen on her daddy’s ‘please come back’ PR stunt.

@Catalina: What has he done? A lot. He defeated warmonger McCain and he will not use the US military to start more imperialistic wars. That’s a fine accomplishment.
