Meryl Streep Covers 'Vanity Fair' January 2010

Meryl Streep graces the January 2010 cover of Vanity Fair, on NY/LA stands December 2 and nationwide on December 8. Here’s what the 60-year-old shared:

At this stage in her life: “I’m very f—ing grateful to be alive. I have so many friends who are sick or gone, and I’m here. Are you kidding? No complaints!”

On never expecting her acting career to last this long: “It’s incredible—I’m 60, and I’m playing the romantic lead in romantic comedies! Bette Davis is rolling over in her grave. She was 42 when she did All About Eve, and she was 54 when she did What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

    She still has it.

  • celia

    She’s GORGEOUS!!

  • Nita

I really like her, but why oh why did VF feel the need to PHOTOSHOP away nearly every single one of her wrinkles???

  • rhonda

the best actress of this era, no one else, even comes close!

  • Lea

I agree with #3. She should not have allowed this. She does not need it, she a a beautiful woman. What is wrong with our society? You are aging and your face is suppose to be smoother that a baby buttcheeks??? How unrealistic!!!!!!

  • Cerey

I am glad Meryl Streep is on the cover of one of these magazines. They NEVER put older women on the cover of major magazines, especially those that cater to the popular culture set.

I was just thinking that during the election cycle last year, John McCain was on the cover of GQ and Esquire, but Hilary was never on the cover of their FEMALE equivalent–Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

It’s silly really. I am glad the folks at VF decided to put an older, accomplished woman on the cover. I hope they don’t photoshop her wrinkles out or try to make her look younger. Keep her the way she is.

  • doggossips

Wonderful woman and the best talented actress in the world !

  • wendy

Class and grace, still and always.

  • Elin

    Love Meryl Streep!!!

  • Liz86000

She looks amazing! But honestly, stop with the photoshop, she doesn’t need it!

  • stellartes

she is beautiful and so effing funny! lol

  • SubSub

My favorite actress since I was a child. Best of her days. She and Bette Davis both have/had such incredible talent. True actresses! There is none alive who is better than Streep. Eat your heart out, Hollywood.

  • Dana

Meryl is gorgeous! So classy. She rules.

  • James Bank

    she gets really great roles!

  • sorry

Sorry as good as she is, she has been phoning it in or hamming it up in her 3 most recent movies: Devil Wears Prada (laughable), Mama Mia (campy fun) and Julie/Julia (a mockery of the legend Julia Child).

She hasn’t been Sophie’s Choice since Sophie’s choice. I hope she stops relying on her legacy to just phone in the work and assume people will think it’s great just because she did it. It doesn’ work for DeNiro, or Pacino.

  • kathleen

meryl is one of my fave actresses, the others are glenn close, jodie foster, and hilary swank.

  • eulalia

I can’t believe that they decided to photoshop her, it’s sooo sad coz she is 60 yrs old and proud of it, the cover looks terrible because of what they’ve done :(

  • khristi

@sorry: Honey, if my memory serves me right, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in The Devil Wears Prada as well as for her recent role in last year’s Doubt. I think that maybe you should do your research before you start being a movie critic hun.

  • meh

    She is amazing. All class.

  • AutumnM

Awesome lady and wonderful actress! GO MERYL

  • clau238

    I must have a copy ASAP !!!

  • helen w.

I’m sorry for the haters, but it doesn’t get much better than Maryl Streep. I’m not a fan of Mamma Mia, but I have to admit that even there she was good. She’s probably the only actress in the world who could pull that movie off.

  • Chau

I wonder how many tons of makeup they had to apply to her face. Or it could be the Botox. Or Photoshop. Or all of the above! -___-

I’ve seen this woman without makeup. Her face resembles a raisin, no lie.

  • Roxanne

One Mistake VF made though…if they can show me another actress in past or present who can totally disappear in her character, the cameleon, the shape-shifter, the body-snatcher, the premium-actress that Meryl has showed us is possiblo, who so completely disappears into her role, the consumate artist… I will show anyone a better than Le Streep, somewhere in the world. But alas, she does not exist!

So what does that make her? She is the greating actress the world has EVER f–king known–of all times!

Wake up world! Le Streep is The One. I don’t know if it will take a century or two or a thousand years to even duplicate her but maybe her equal or greater has already been born.

We’ll find out sooner than later.

This woman is both premium and the popular. You can never get better than that!

  • happy girl

    love her!

  • Jeff

Meryl has very few lines in her face. With good lighting and make-up alone they’re hardly visible, so I doubt they did a lot of editing with her wrinkles.

  • Jen

She definitely is the best American actress of the era. There will never be another Meryl. The way she can disappear into any character and speak any accent perfectly is just amazing. The only two actors who have been able to pull off mastering every accent they’ve had to speak are Peter Ustinoff and Meryl Streep. I think that says quite a lot about her mad acting skill.

I don’t think any actress has been able to give consistent great performances in almost every movie she’s in, but I think Meryl is one of the very few who has pulled that off. For that alone, she gets my full respect.

  • lakers fan in boston

i like her because she’s a good actress
i enjoy most of the movies she makes
i dont think ill watch her new movie tho, doesnt look that interesting but ive watched a lot of her other movies

  • lexy

She’s awesome. Just Jared it’s so nice to see a REAL actress on your site instead of the usual posers and media wh0res you normally right about.

  • Marieme

I’m so doing the happy dance right now!

This is too cool. It’s about time Vanity Fair profiles a truly interesting woman. I’ve been waiting for a really good read. Meryl rocks! She’s never compromised herself and has a bigger career than any of these stupid little girls who are tossing off their clothes praying for attention and “grown-up” roles. They’re all idiots. They can keep flashing all they want, but they’ll never have anything close to Streep’s career. Not in this lifetime. Hah!

  • agnes

    simply the best

The U.N. of acting. Go Meryl.

  • sorry

Um no that was Cate Blanchett and Helen Mirren.

  • elisa
  • elisa

I love her, by the way. She is one of the greatest living actress.

  • Lauren

@Chao — big f*cking deal, she has wrinkles.. she’s 60!!! Most 60-year-olds do, dumbass. She’s a gorgeous, and more importantly, incredibly talented woman. Love love love her. When you see her movies, you don’t Meryl Streep, you see the character she’s playing.

  • Mary Happy

    Does she have any children?

  • Belladonna

Who cares if they photoshopped the cover? Every magazine cover is photoshopped even if the model is 12.

  • oy

I don’t see how she’s managed to look human and keep working. She’s like an alien life form in her profession. Nicole Kidman, Lisa Rinna, Meg Ryan – take note.

  • Thunderstruck

I have nothing to add to these comments, I am just glad for her

  • Dawn

Yes, the cover looks great, but it would have been even greater if there hadn’t been so much airbrushing going on. She’s a good-looking woman, and doesn’t really need it. I think that she’s not only let herself down, but also a lot of other 60-year old women all over the world, who will be looking at that cover and thinking: “Is that what we have to live up to now?”. I don’t mean that she should completely go the other way and say, not wear any makeup. But imagine people seeing this Photoshopped creation, and having a set idea in their heads about what she looks like. And it can’t be very pleasant for her, showing up somewhere in public, and seeing that look of slight disappointment that would inevitably be on some people’s faces (and people can be cruel about these things). In my opinion, if you want to look glamorous, but real with it, that way it feels better looking in the mirror and facing the world, and a lot of people would be more admiring of that.

  • clau238

    the best cover ever !!!
    I love this woman !!!

  • countess von zinzendorf

Thought she was great in Mama Mia.

  • KyleM

She really is a stunning woman.

  • gregorio

Sorry, but Sigourney Weaver, Shirley MacLaine (e.g. in “The Children’s Hour”), Jennifer Jason Lee, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kathy Bates, and Karen Black are but six American actresses who risk waaaaay more in the roles they take, and are consequently more fearless (and, therefore more convincing) actresses than the always overhyped Meryl Streep.

  • Laural

Meryl Streep is the greatest actress ever!Period. There never was nor will there ever be anyone better than this goddess. And it really pisses me off that they photo shopped her so much! This woman is gorgeous, wrinkles and all.Besides,it’s the beauty on the inside that everyone is so drawn to in her.
