please god not sam mendes. his last film only made 10 million dollars. get martin campbell back. if not martin then christopher nolan. or someone else.

  • gaunt

l’m actually pleasantly surprised that it’s Mendes. I like all his films. They should have mentioned how much American Beauty earned. His latest film was indie and not widely marketed so who give’s a hoot? l hope he adds the smarts and the necessary action for 007.

  • Tina

    That could be interesting!

  • at gaunt

oh yeah american beauty was such a great film; not!! it was an unqualified bore. bond films are basically action ones with, hopefully, a good story attached. we need a director who has PROVEN ability to direct this kind of film. directors like martin campbell, christopher nolan, etc etc. with sam mendes at the helm it will be worse than QOS.

  • Sy-Lights

    Good choice.

  • to sy-lights

a good choice? sorry i see a disaster worse than QOS

  • theory

they put out that sam mendes is talking about directing bond 23 to see how bond fans will react. like a corporation putting out feelers on a potential new product.

  • to 7

well to tell the truth its about 50/50

  • tames

Uhmm, Bond is supposed to be an ACTION and intrigue film! I think EON should consider Pete Travis (Vantage Point, Engame)!

  • to tames

pete travis? now that is an idea. to be honest that is one director that i had never thought of. i did enjoy endgame. didn’t see vantage point.

  • to Tames- excellent choice!

Great idea TAMES! I wholeheartedly agree with you on Pete Travis …In the alternative, I also would like Martin Campbell back for 23, if they can get him. Even if he has already passed up Bond23, they should most definitely make another, ‘sweeter” offer to him or go with Travis.

Martin Campbell rocks, and if anyone can do this, he can do this job so brilliantly and blow-out BOND23 to exceed all expectations, as he did with Casino Royale!

  • dundies

lol i was just on imdb looking at this. strange

  • tames

I would love to see Martin Campbell do Bond 23 as well, but seems like I read somewhere that he wasn’t interested. You are right about EON making an offer he can’t refuse to have him back. There is certainly no rule against directing more than one or two Bond films. The early directors, Guy Hamilton directed four, and John Glen directed five!

  • to Tames- excellent choice!

Tames, if this JJ post above is true and if they do ultimately decide to run with ‘Mellow-man Mendes’ for 23, they better be very careful and watch him like a hawk to make sure bond 23 does not turn into a Snoring Snooze-Fest!

  • Pam

Sam is not the worst choice, but is not best. I also vote for Martine.

  • tames

The only reason Quantum of Solace did so well with the boxoffice is because it was riding on Casino Royale’s coattails. I think Mark Forster, he of the lifeless characters genre, made a mess of it!

  • to Tames- excellent choice!

well if Mellow-man does direct this one, everyone should just bring their pillows to see bond 23. they will be sound asleep in no time.

  • to Tames- excellent choice!

you said it right, ‘lifeless characters” is a perfect way to describe them. Not only was the film a disappointment but Eon better get their music absolutely right on point this time.
More of a mess than Marc Foster’s film was the worst bond song ever by Keys and black.

  • tames

@to Tames- excellent choice!: Harsh! LOL Of course, rumor has it that it is difficult to get repeat directors on Bond anymore because current EON producers are so controlling. Anyway, I hope #7 “theory” is correct and they are just floating Mendes’ name out there to see how people will react. I hope they see that most Bond fans do not like the idea.

  • Pam
  • To Tames- excellent choice!

    Dear EON….
Great idea to float this rumor. Cross Sam off your list.
Sam Mendes is a nice guy but unfortunately he is going to create the next Bond film as one big Snoring Snooze Fest.
Take Sammy off the list and call Martin Campbell back asap, make him the sweetest offer he cannot refuse.

  • ellie’

I hope that Mendez will hire Jennifer Aniston as the Bond girl. She be perfect for roll.

  • To Tames- excellent choice!

Even this Edge article says that Sam cannot do ‘action’ sequences.

  • to tames-excellent choice

i second your request to eon to get sammy of the list. snooze fest is not the word for it. if they can’t get martin campbell then talk to christopher nolan, phllip noyce, neil blomkamp (district 9), ridley scott, and/or paul greengrass.

  • Director

Sam is “in talks”. That says nothing.

Has he spoken to Michael Wilson who just the other day said Bond is on hold until MGM is sold? And what does MGM say about these “talks”.

This is just chatter to keep Bond 23 relevant and investors interested.

  • To Tames- excellent choice!

I wonder if Sam will be able to steer EON up **** creek without a paddle? LoL!

  • Ahoy

I see this idea sinking faster than the Titanic. Next up, Celine Dion for the theme song.

  • To Tames- excellent choice!

How does EON spell disaster? S-A-M M-E-N-D-E-S.

  • ellie’

Why noooooooooooooooooo? Jen has great body and smile. Everyone love her as Bond girl.

  • tames

    @Ahoy: ROTFL!!

  • ellie’

I agree. Celine Dion has magical voice for Bond movie.

  • tames

@ellie’: OMG ellie! Are you for real? Somehow I think not. Hey, you’re pretty funny!

Isn’t he the hubby of Kate Winslet? Huh.

  • tames

@pup: Yes, he is. And he was spotted this summer having lunch with Daniel Craig in NYC. I hope this isn’t the Hollywood equivalent of the “good ol’ boys” network.

  • MMA

    He’s a great director!

well, the hollywood reporter and the los angeles times are both reporting that sam mendes is in talks to direct bond 23. the los angeles times wouldn’t print the information if they didn’t think that it was credible. since both daniel craig and judi dench both say that filming will begin in 2010 the powers that be have to come up with a director pdq. bond films don’t direct themselves.

  • To Tames- excellent choice!

perhaps he is a great director, just not the appropriate director for a james bond film.

  • Stone

I wonder who he (to be nice) knows.

Sam Mendes to direct next Bond pic
Production could begin as early as June

    Sam Mendes.
The British helmer is in negotiations to direct the 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise.
Production is being fast-tracked and could begin as early as June with an eye toward a 2011 release. Plans for the film are moving forward despite a possible sale of MGM. Sony co-produced and distributed the most recent installment of the 007 series with MGM.
Bond regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are writing, along with “Frost/Nixon” scribe Peter Morgan. Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are producing. Daniel Craig will reprise his role as 007.
The film will be Mendes’ first action-heavy project, though his 2005 effort “Jarhead” was set amid U.S. war in Kuwait. Mendes’ most recent directorial effort, the road-trip dramedy “Away We Go,” grossed $10 million domestically last summer.
-any questions? remember this is the hollywood reporter; a paper that usually gets info like this first.

  • ellie’

    @to director:

Yes. I have question. Did it mention who will be Bond girl?

  • bbwmatchmakers

Who is he married to? Winslet?

  • WOW

at least all the Bond forums are mostly positive excited about this news.

EXCLUSIVE: Sam Mendes About To Be Hired As “Consultant” On Bond #23

As you know, the James Bond filmmaker EON Productions operates with great autonomy and secrecy. I’ve just learned that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are in final negotiations with CAA for director Sam Mendes to come on as a consultant to the 23rd James Bond film (as yet untitled). That’s right — not as the director, yet. This is for the film now in pre-production for release in 2011 that is set after Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace and again stars Daniel Craig (who has been telling folks that filming begins in late 2010). I hear Daniel Craig is “insisting” on Mendes’ hiring because the actor was stung by criticism of the last Bond film. (And Mendes directed Craig in Road To Perdition.) Oscar-winner Peter Morgan with Quantum Of Solace and Casino Royale alumni Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, is writing the script for the latest film. Here’s what sources are telling me: once EON hires a director on their Bond films, it triggers a first payment from MGM. Well, given that MGM is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, and EON may have the right to take Bond elsewhere, it stands to reason that the producers wouldn’t want to do anything right away that further complicates ownership of Bond #23. “The producers are working on a deal to bring Sam on as consultant with an eye to direct,” one of my insiders says. “Once they put him on as the director, something happens to the contract in terms of ownership. But let me emphasize there’s not any deal done.” Said one insider about the choice of Mendes: “Barbara thinks he’s smart, which he is. But you don’t need such a fancy director. You need someone who can do an action movie.” (Hmm, does Road To Perdition count? I loved it.)

    I like Sam. Good choice.

  • Bad choice
  • RealityCheck

American Beauty was a great movie. I’m really sorry to see how someone so talented like Sam Mendes is given a superficial assignment like James Bond. His talent runs much deeper than the shallow Bond stories.

  • Gina

“Daniel is ‘insisting’ on Mendes’ hiring because the actor was stung by criticism of the last Bond film (Quantum of Solace).”

“Once EON hires a director on their Bond films, it triggers a first payment from MGM.”

“MGM deny Bond 23 pre-production freeze contradict production team.”

“A is the norm for industry, MGM has refused to confirm the reports that Sam Mendes is in discussion to direct.”
Well, at least Daniel knows the truth about Quantum of Solace.
Danny Boyle was hot bomba for producers for his Slumdog and all confirmed he’s in discussion to direct, Mendes is not, Mendes= means rumours as always. They say, the Bond work starts early June, so was right all the time with saying that Bond starts this year, not next year. I am very near to win bet again.

  • to 49

Everybody knew that Bond start this year.
