Jennifer Lopez: 'El Cantante' Was Oscar-Worthy

Jennifer Lopez shares her feelings on love, marriage and her work in the February 2010 issue of Latina magazine.

Here’s what the 40-year-old entertainer had to share (via USA Today):

On her marriage to Marc Anthony: “There’s a deep respect, admiration and love for each other. We honestly believe that we make each other better people…We force each other to be better, and I think in a relationship, that’s how it should be. You shouldn’t be with somebody if he makes you feel less than who you are.”

On past work with exes: “Exposed? Vulnerable? Do I cringe? [Laughs] No, no, it’s a literal snapshot. Every one of my albums is very spot-on with who I was at the time. … I can’t regret the things I did in the past, like putting somebody in a video that I was with. Who cares? I think people relate to me because they know that I’m not being phony.”

On Oscar-worthy work: “I feel like I had that [Oscar worthy role] in El Cantante, but I don’t even think the academy members saw it. I feel like it’s their responsibility to do that, to see everything that’s out there, everything that could be great…..It’s all good. Things will happen when they’re supposed to happen. I have the utmost faith and no doubt that it will one day, when and if it’s supposed to. You can’t get all crazy twisted over it.”

she actually did do really good in el cantante, probably worthy of a nomination…but that movie wasn’t nearly popular enough for that. the academy members cant see everythingggg

  • emmaa

I wanna see this film now!

  • lauren

uh, sorry jenny from the block, but i unfortunately saw a good 15 minutes of el cantante…not good. like the opposite of good. it was one of the most terrible 15 minutes of my life. i could keep going, but her performance was most definitely NOT oscar worthy…i think that’s a bit cocky for her to say, i mean i know she’s j.lo, but i can’t think of a single brilliant film she has put out since “out of sight.” oh yeah, because there aren’t any.

  • no

as a puerto rican, this broad is embarrassing.she made that film more a bout puchi than hector.she treated that film like a vehicle for herself instead properly telling the story of a puerto rican icon.lame ass.

  • Craig

oh woow……have yall guys seen TIger WOOds S3X TAPE….i saw it on or

    it was one of those…

  • just say no

She looks really pretty there but sorry, her performance was definitely not Oscar worthy.

  • mihay

Oscar worthy? Did she even see this crapfest? I watched the first 10 minutes and had to change the channel.

And on her not being phony? There is not thing on her that is not phony. Her face, personality..I could go on and on.

  • mickey

People who act to win Oscars miss the point entirely and probably aren’t very good actors.

  • Lowest denominator

She was OK in that, but nothing more.

In her head it may have been “the one,” but the noms for Best Actress were Streep, Dench, Cruz, Winslet, and Mirren.

She would have ben swallowed whole by the competition.

  • Chrissy

Mickey….thank you. These actors who’s biggest goal is to win an oscar are so ridiculous and you’re right. They miss the point.

  • xxxx

    Wow, what an imbecile.
I mean what kinda actress says “oh that performance was oscar worthy but whatever I guess they didn’t see it.”
I hate her even more now…..
    So cocky.
And by the way Jenny from the block, it wasn’t oscar worthy. It was cringe worthy.

  • Cheery

    Jello, sit DOWN.

  • wow

I can’t decide whether she’s worse at acting or singing. But she’s bad. Period. And there’s nothing genuine about her. She’s Ms. PHONY, and no one can relate to her.

  • Annamaire

what a lulz worthy article. SIT DOWN Jlo

  • bohemeballerine

Ok I’ll admit the movie “El Cantante” was indeed good BUT (no pun intended) MARC ANTHONY was the one who really deserved an Oscar not Jennifer. He truly gave an Oscar-worthy performance as Hector Lavoe. He also did great in his small part in “Man on Fire” a few years back too. I can say that J-Lo is a decent actress but Marc Anthony has waaaaay more acting (and singing) chops than her.

  • bohemeballerine

P.S.. – And she should have known immediately NOT to be in any more movies with a boyfriend/spouse. I mean duh…of course Academy voters weren’t thinking about seeing another J-Lo + her significant other movie.

  • get real

It’s not that they didn’t see it. The Academy saw the movie and said, “sorry, but no thank you.”

  • me

She needs to stop trying to smooth her wrinkles by stretching her face every time a picture is taken. Look at her face in that picture (all pictures) she looks ridiculous.

  • Naima

    # 5 I totally agree, this woman is narcissistic and delusional. She was so annoying in the film as she is in everything she does. This woman has absolutely no TALENT, she’s only good for shaking her ass when she dances. I’m so glad that she is no longer in the spotlight like she used to be and that her star is getting dimmer. She’s done and she knows it, she just keeps reaching trying to convince herself that she’s significant.

  • janet

It’s always amazing to me how she blames other people for her crap. The movie going public didn’t give Gigli a chance, it was my manager demanding things not me, it was my dancers fault I fell. When is it ever the revelation maybe it’s just me, and people are over it.

  • shorty

Ooooh – bionic socks! What do they do?

  • lexy

Move over Meryl Streep – J-LO and her bad acting and singing considers herself Oscar-worthy!!

  • delee

    ahahahaha! oscar-worthy.

  • me me me

lol. academy members are people with actual jobs, their have better things to do than watch every crap-lousy movie that comes out, especially when the film didn’t get very good reviews. has she any idea how many movies are made per single year?

  • Inaru

She did very well in El Cantante, i don’t think it was Oscar worthy but at least a mention would’ve been fair. If the movie had been better i’m sure it would’ve garnered more attention. Marc did ok but he wasn’t as good as Jennifer. I think Jennifer shouldn’t blame the Academy, i’d put the blame on the director, that movie was a mess, if you didn’t know who was Hector Lavoe it didn’t make sense.

  • Pining for Chris

  • Devon

    Dear JLo,
    Get a grip
    you are over
    o v e r
    as in done.

  • Chef Jacke

Hell, you can’t even see her best feature in this picture!

  • Stone

@Chef Jacke: That was then, this is now!

  • MMA

@just say no: It depends on what Oscar your talking about. If it’s my fat retarded neighbor Oscar Dietzer, then yes, she is very worthy!

  • alanda

We all know oscars are politized now…i think too, the movie was only ok, but her acting was really good, and marc too. It could be a oscar nominated, but i doubt critics even watch her films because she is “jlo”
The cover is sexy, but too photoshop and she doesn´t need it!

  • For Your Consideration

    What mickey said.

  • shane

Yeah it’s a big conspiracy against one of the biggest media whores in Hollywood. My friend rented that movie and she was overacting and melodramtic. She tired to make the movie about the wife’s character instead of him. And I’m sorry she didn’t deserve any nominations for that performance.

  • veronica

Not to mention I read an expert of the article on another blog an she said she had just given birth to her invitro twins. And she’s thinking about Oscars? Good luck to anyone who could be a fan to this broad. And I don’t know who said it earlier but she does seem to blame her failures on other people. What was it last year “I can’t be JLO anymore because of my husband” WTF. Does it ever occur to her it’s not that deep they probably did see it and said no thanks.

  • LGodiva

O.M.G. She’s as delusional about her acting ‘talent’ as Kate Gosselin is about her relevance and ‘celebrity’. Gawd.

  • Kerri

Nuttier than a fruitcake. She’s hilarious in that unintentional way that makes you cringe. And it’s clear she’s not over Ben. He dumped her – the first guy ever to do that probably – and she wont forget it. He got out just in time. (So to speak!)

  • Maria from Texas

Jenny from the block should hang low after that embarrassing debacle on NEW YEARS.EVE. Jenny from the block and her husband act like they are the only owners of the Miami Dolphins. I SURE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF % they actually own. Probably not even 1% of 1%. She looked so stupid wearing that red dress going to football game on Sunday. . POOR , POOR DELUSIONAL WOMAN. LOOK AT THIS PICTURE FOR THIS THREAD. , SHE LOOKS LIKE SUSAN LUCCI A MUCH OLDER SUSAN LUCCI.

  • LadyB

I guess I am the only one that thinks she deserves an Oscar Nomination for that role. I thought she was great and the movie was good also. But I also agree an Actress should not mention that her role was Oscar cheapens her status as a solid Actress, even if she’s right.

  • BEN

  • Yuck

Worned out hag, zero talent, whore who slept her way to the top only to tumble to the bottom to end up with an ugly dope fiend. She’s wearing tons of makeup and still looks a mess.

  • AutumnM

Okay i’ve seen “El Catante” and I thought the movie could have been much better. It felt rushed together. However, both J.LO and Marc Anthony did do a good job in it, but did Jennifer deserve an Oscar nomination for it? I don’t think so, but she did a pretty good job I have to say.

  • John Shinn

    brown ugly trash!

  • frenchy

    Don’t believe everything!!!!!!!!!

It bombed at the box office and the critics so why would the Oscars
care about this movie… please all she does is talk about her

  • KKK

Ghetto SP IC should be pissed and shat on by other SP ICS! How typical of SP ICS to be proud of this glorified, cosmetic surgery queen, Box-Office loser!

You people are always so racist when a PuertoRican is featured on this blog. They always get the worst of the racist comments for some reason. If you don’t like them that is your right but you don’t always have to be racist against them. Don’t forget there is a PuertoRican on the Supreme Court who will help shape your future so STFU loser idiots.

  • Elsie

So, so LOVED “El Cantante”!!!! Watch it all the time. Marc Anthony was awesome, like always, Oscar-worthy performance as Hector Lavoe. He is such a GREAT entertainer! Jennifer was also great, loved her acting, she made the character look so down to earth, tough, and a true Boricua! This film gives me a glimpse on the creation and explosion of Salsa history. Was Hector’s life sad or unfortunate? One can argue either way. And JLo, your only getting better with age! Soon your nomination will come. Proud to be a Puerto Rican!!!!!
