Gabourey Sidibe: One Day I Decided That I Was Beautiful

Gabourey Sidibe works it out in this photo from the February 2010 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, on newsstands January 12.

The 26-year-old star of Precious posed for super-glam photos and spoke about doing the shoot, her confidence and the media’s synopsis of the film.

On posing for Harper’s Bazaar: “I feel like a model. It justifies everyone in my life who told me I wouldn’t be anything until I lost weight. It justifies that little girl who cried because she didn’t think she could be in front of the camera. And it’s for other girls who feel like they can’t do this or that and feel like they’re not pretty and not worthy of having their photo taken.”

On her confidence: “People always ask me, ‘You have so much confidence. Where did that come from?’ It came from me. One day I decided that I was beautiful, and so I carried out my life as if I was a beautiful girl. I wear colors that I really like, I wear makeup that makes me feel pretty, and it really helps. It doesn’t have anything to do with how the world perceives you. What matters is what you see.”

On celebs she’s into: “Man! Justin Timberlake is always good. God, there are so many hot dudes in Hollywood right now. I’m such a fanny, fanny girl. Bradley Cooper. How hot is he?”

Oh i love her! she’s great in the movie… shes a bif role model for little girls…

    She was fantastic in Precious

  • Bob

One day I decided I’m going to be President

  • hedda

I like the way she thinks.

  • Ren

    go big girl GET BUSY

  • bebe

DO NOT get me wrong but she is far from a role model for teens, when hollywood is too thin WE FROWN AGAINST it, SO THE same should apply to a young girl who is OBVIOUSLY OVER WEIGHT and probably having some HEALTH issues due to her WEIGHT.

  • to dan

you’re right she is big. however she was magnificant in precious; regardless of how much she weighs. it’s entirely possible that she could win the oscar for best actress.

  • to bebe

she could be a role models for the teens who have weight issues. those children who are struggling because they are over weight. this woman has obviously come to terms with who she is and what she wants. loosing weight does not appear to be on of the things she wants. ok but think about it, this woman could win the oscar for best actress for her work in precious. that will send one heck of a message to teens.

  • ck_always

    Hahahha I crack myself up!

  • loma

Why is Miley on the cover instead of this young, talented, beautiful actress??? I bet if she was a size 2, she would have been on the cover. This industry will never change.

  • ck_always

@to bebe: If she was “coming to terms” with being fat, then she’d realize she’s going to die under the age of 50 and start losing the weight rather than saying “wahh I’m fat, but I still love myself”.

I hope she doesn’t win the oscar, people need to get off this bandwagon.

  • bebe

AGAIN I do not condone any form of ESSESIVNESS WHETHER it be thin or BIG. Being over weight is not healthy. As a sister, a mother and a wife I would say to her ” GIRL YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL PERSON but in order to live healthy and longer you would have to hit the GYM OR take an active walk once in a while quit the FRIED CHICKEN for dinner pick up fruits and salad once in a while AND pick up ur OSCAR IN style………………….

  • wendy

She is beautiful, so what if she is large, as long as she is healthy its all good. Amazing performance in Precious, i hope she gets tons of work, and that Oscar.

  • Celia

    She’s GORGEOUS!!!!

  • InfamouslyCool

she is just such a breathe of fresh air for this industry, who cares if she is overweight. just like who cares if a person is too thin, people come in all shapes and sizes.

on another note has anyone noticed that people bash Raven-symone for her weight when raven, compared to Gabourey is actually quite thin, just soemthing to think about.

  • jenny

I agree with her. You SHOULD be happy with who you are and have a high self esteem. But she is overweight and that’s something that she should work on. She shouldn’t be happy about her health issues that she probably has because of her weight.
Good job on the self esteem but you need to loose weight to be HEALTHY.

  • mickey

I’m down with her confidence. She has bad taste in men though. Justin Timberlame? Ewwwwww

  • CanadaGirl

I think the sentiments expressed are wonderful, but putting out the message that being this big is wrong – there are obvious health risks that need to be considered. It’s not a matter of her being big and successful – that unto itself is great – but there is no mention of the ramifications of being morbidly obese on one’s health. . .

  • oy

@bebe: Well said. I’m glad she has confidence, but I hope she realizes that her size is going to affect her health at some point. Denial isn’t good. She is not just a few pounds overweight. Mo’nique realized she had to lose and has started working on that. People are swinging to extremes too much on this issue. Rachel Zoe is anorexic looking. This woman is too heavy. Neither is healthy.

  • potential

I hope she’s offered more opportunities in acting. She was great in Precious. But I’m going to have to agree with #19. Bradley Cooper? ewwww…

  • http://justjared style1

I like her, but they couldn’t put another dress on her.

  • CanadaGirl

@oy: Excellent points and intelligently put.

  • get real

we can’t all be beautiful and we should encourage our kids to put less emphasis on body image and more on body health. stop lying to the public.

  • http://justjared deke

Well, it’s so nice to hear a fresh young celebrity talk some sense. I really really like her.

  • Johnny

shes big as hell yo.. damn
i’d love me some kfc too but woman better leave them buckets alone for a year

  • bajan

  • Jen

I love her attitude, I think regardless of size, her message of self- acceptance is awesome and can apply to anyone who doesn’t feel beautiful! you go girl!

  • jenna

it’s great to be a role model to have a healthy body, and not stick thin, but she is obviously at unhealthy weight. not something,in my opinion, young girls should ‘look up to.’

  • annasaurus

I don’t care about her weight. I just don’t think she’ll have much of a career in Hollywood after all the Precious accolades die down.

  • Anon

    You are beautiful, Gabby.

  • soccerdatingsite

    I would date her

  • ck_always

@soccerdatingsite: That would be one expensive date.

  • robin

i absolutely admire her attitude and confidence. if more people were like her their wouldnt be so many people with eating disorders.
However I think her weight is an issue. Its not definately not healthy for rachel zoe to be so skinny and its not healthy for this girl to be soo overweight either.
I hate to say it but the fact that she is getting so much attention from hollywood and all the critics (which she deserves because she was great in precious) means that she will probably see no point in losing weight because she’s already made it without doing anything about her weight.
I wish her all the best in 2010 but i hope their are people around her that will encourage and support her in losing weight.

  • cutechurchsingles

I’m just so proud of what she has over come

  • postwatcher

Whatever happend to being a normal weight. The magazines are looking for some additional pr by jumping on the plus size bandwagon for a single issue, but they are missing the point.

I don’t want to see a plus sized model and I don’t want to see an anorexic model. I would love just to see someone that is at a healthy weight. How about people sized 8 to 10. And also I am not talking about today’s “vanity” sized numbers. The 8s and 10s from back in the day when size 0 and 00 did not exist.

Also, I would like to tell all you 0s and 00s, your real size 25-30 years ago was prolly a 6 and 8 ……go to a vintage shop and try on some jeans from 20+ years ago without lycra….

  • bbwdatingsite

    Hopefully she won’t OD

  • sweetness

I’ve been to middle America and let me fill you in on a secret..most people in middle American are closer to her size than the size 0 models and actresses we see in film and tv…why do you think there’s no shortage of contestants for shows on TV like The Biggest Losers…

  • I n F a m o u s l y C o o l

  • cc

she is not healthy, she is morbidly obese! she is probably more at risk for health problems than stick-thin models. this does not send a good message at all… yes, obsessing less about body image would be nice, but this girl does not help!

  • Gasol16

Hate to sound like a downer here. I do love strong confidence like that but, Gabourey is wayyyy tooo fat! She is morbidly obese. That much weight will only cause her health problems later on down the line. Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure for starters. She can stand to get down to at least a size 14. Not that she does not have a pretty face. She does. But, for her own health she should drop some weight.

  • Erica

I absolutely love her self-confidence. Not everyone is meant to be a size 5. She’s much more beautiful than any of you nasty people could ever be.

  • The truth

This is the same nonsense that Star Jones spouted for years “I’m big and beautiful. I love myself. I look fabulous. I don’t need to lose weight to be beautiful.”

After stomach stapling, she finally admitted the truth — that she was MISERABLE at her former weight.

THE TRUTH: Gabby delivered an incredible performance in a one-of-a kind film. She is receiving enormous attention because of that. BUT, she will get perhaps one more role in the wake of this, then she wioll quickly fade into oblivion if she remains at her current weight..

SHE IS CLINICALLY OBESE!! She is a young girl in the prime of her life who is WASTING her youth by walking around at the size of a baby elephant.

She also looks ridiculous gushing about JT. She is getting attention for her performance, but in private, the JTs of the world are laughing at her.

She needs to LOSE WEUIGHT for the sake of her own health. She will DIE at this weight, all because she is too LAZY to diet. YOU ARE DELUDING YOURSELF, GABBY. YOU ARE THE SIZE OF AN ANIMAL.
Get healthy now. Save your life.

  • Mew2

She sounds more like she is in self denial about her weight. I seriously doubt that when she stands naked in front of a mirror she sees her body as something beautiful. Like most fat people she probably avoids looking at herself naked. Fantastic actress or not ( and I think she is) her size limits the roles she can play. She will always be cast as the fat one!

  • Popeye

yes…..self denial about her weight. She’s only fooling herself!

Hope she gets educated about what she is doing to her body.

Your bored aren’t you? Don’t have a job to tend to? Didn’t get a proper education? I understand…. I’ll keep it moving

  • ck_always

@Whoever: What an awful retort! How hypocritical is it to reply to such a comment calling me bored? It’s anywhere from 10pm to 1am in the U.S. and you’re calling me out on having a job? Please ..use some thought process. I believe my education is far greater than the majority of society so keep diggin’. (By the way it’s “you’re not your”, you can appreciate that) Move along with your tasteless banter and allow me and my sharp wit to entertain those worthy.

  • Spangles

LOL at all the diet experts! If it was as easy as all that, we’d ALL be thin. Kudos to Ms Sidibe for being who she is and for not apologising for it. You go girl!
