Natalie Portman Speaks Out About Haiti

Natalie Portman has a call to action up today on the official website of FINCA, her charity initiative.

The 28-year-old actress has served as the Ambassador of Hope for the organization since 2004. Here’s what Nat had to share:

“The earthquakes that devastated Haiti this week only further the urgency of aid needed by this already-challenged nation. Haiti is a place where small loans can make a big difference.

“FINCA Haiti has always held a special place in my heart. Small loans make an enormous impact on the lives of Haitian women currently living on less than $3 a day. And now, more than ever, Haitian women need these capital inputs to help themselves recover from this tragedy in a sustainable way.

“As FINCA’s Ambassador of Hope, I am asking for your help. Please help FINCA Haiti provide the resources to our Village Banking clients so they can begin to get back on their feet and build anew. There has rarely been a more urgent need for generosity.

“Please give what you can, and I thank you for your continued support of FINCA programs around the world.

Yes, she’s beautiful, can act and isn’t obese, wearing a dress to die for, and using her celebrity to promote good causes. She’s a real star.

They may need loans in due time, but right now all they need is some clean water, food and a place to sleep. There’s no government, no infrastructure, no one to pay for services. Her statement shows how out of touch she is with reality.

I agree with you Kit. I know it’s better to do less than nothing. But in Haiti’s case some people better act instead of issuing statements. There are lives to save and every second is precious, they need shelters for the night, and food. I am really tired of those celebs who organize charity galas, or shows or whatever. Do you know how much money it akes for those things to organize? The location fees, the exuberant cost of the menus, gosh their one million dollar dresses and tuxedos. Why instead of getting those spotlight’s pictures they just don’t DONATE directly to those in need?
For Haiti now I think it’s better to send money directly to NGO’s who know better than anyone else on how to handle the situation.

We don’t know that she didn’t donate money personally. As Ambassador it’s her job to say something about the situation. After that mess with George Clooney and the 9/11 victims I don’t think a lot of celebs are in a rush to host gala’s for victims. Natalie has a job right now and like the rest of us, she just can’t up and leave and run to Haiti. Her acting skills are of no use those people right now. Times are tough and at least Natalie is trying to encourage people to donate – again we don’t know that she didn’t donate personally. At least she’s acknowledging what’s going on as opposed to just shopping all day.

    has a good personality.

I admire Natalie for her intelligent statement and call for help. In addition to donations for Haiti in these horrific times FINCA loans would enable those who are in a position to get supplies to distribute them to others. All elements of assistance are essential at this time.

Looks lovely, both her make up and the dress (I love the color!). I think she’s a very genuine person and doesn’t use tragedies as an oppotunity to highight philanthropy.

    @Kit Says:

If all you think is ppl need just food and water or shelter then you are the one out of touch. Have you ever surived a natual disaster. I have and believe me just the idea ppl do care be it food or funds even ralling other to donate means plenty. What Natalie like George Clooney is asking ppl to take the time out of their lives, stop and give what they can to Haiti victims. Instead of looking down on Natalie for what she is doing why not give her credit for the years of support she has done. She isn’t the one stop wonder with her charity work she is actually one of few celebrities that constantly do support these charities.

    me Says:

I aways supported natalie in all she do. Her movies and charity work. She don’t pretend to love it she really does care about people. Not like other people that appear her her 3 times a week and don’t do nothing but put on an act for everyone for personal gain. Love her all the time she’s here.

    mimi Says:

Natalie is wonderful. A class act. Beautiful and educated. Just what we need more of.

    mickey Says:

Oh, thank goodness Natalie has spoken. Now I can give. What would we do without celebrities telling us to help those in need?

    ron Says:

I know a lot of guys who are into her and just contributed on Finca website. If she did not say anything we would not care. She is a sexy screen goddess and she is smart so we listen.

    I like what she said:

“And now, more than ever, Haitian women need these capital inputs to help themselves recover from this tragedy in a sustainable way.”

Immediate relieve is coming but a sustainable one is very important. It is nice to get a glass of water when you are thirsty, it is also nice to get a glass of milk for your kids every day.

She’s insane and lying. Billions have been given to the island and nothing changed.. The Haitians are a loooooooooong way from living in peace with each other.. they are gangsters that need the UN to keep them from murdering each other, and the UN couldn’t do much .. other than rob them or molest a few. The red cross stationed there; suddenly and immediately ran out of everything the day of the disaster? They must have had two bandaids, tweezers and a bottle of alcohol. NO FOOD? UH HUH right now it’s just sell your child as a servant, rape, loot, terrorize and voodoo drug the the weakest into slaves.. while the inner city is crying out to rebuild so the best can live in luxury again and not rule or care… Don’t be fooled.

    ron Says:

Look, she made sense, these people will get some water and blankets but what about tomorrow and the next day? How are they to survive in the long run? There are emergency relieves pouring from many countries, but what after they leave? I respect what she is doing.

  21. 21
    GUEST Says:

@19 youre an a–hole you dont even know what youre talking about you know how many people have died and the ones that havnt how many are injured you talk about running out of bandais etc… why dont you go and join and see how easy it would be scumbag!!

  22. 22
    ron Says:

Sure, everyone who is helping Haitians is insane, so we should all just give up and listen to you. You need serious help.

Portman is smart, no two ways about it. These people need to fight for survival, immediate relief is necessary but not enough. These women need help to bring up and educate the next generation.
