Anne Hathaway: White Queen is a Punk-Rock, Vegan Pacifist

Anne Hathaway is gearing up for the release of Tim Burton‘s Alice in Wonderland, which will premiere in London on February 25!

Here’s what Anne had to share about her role in the film…

On her character: “I play the White Queen. When I was trying to work her out, I kept saying to myself, ‘She is a punk-rock, vegan pacifist.’ So I listened to a lot of Blondie, I watched a lot of Greta Garbo movies, and I looked at a lot of the artwork of Dan Flavin. Then a little bit of Norma Desmond got thrown in there, too. And she just kind of emerged. And I really like her.”

On working with green screens: “I took a very Zen approach to filmmaking on this one. It sounds silly, but I had no idea what was going on. I walked in and it was like being in a neon-green terrarium–green on all sides, and tons of empty space. Tim knew what was going on—he was the one that is in control of it. All I needed to do was hit my mark and say my lines, and wait for Tim to tell me that we’re ready to move on. And that was my approach to it. I didn’t put any other pressure on myself. I just showed up and acted.”

On her costuming: I’m wearing a dress designed by Colleen Atwood. It’s grand and the most fragile dress I’ve ever worn in my life. I love it so much. It’s beautiful. If you ever had a dream of being any kind of fairy princess, this is the dress you would wear. I love the idea that it’s this idealized, fairy-tale Queen, but it is in a Tim Burton movie, so there’s darkness mixed up with it as well.”

Alice in Wonderland hits theaters March 5 nationwide!

Colleen Atwood is amazing. Tonner is going to do a White Queen doll eventually and I can’t wait to see that one.

How the f*ck did she get that role? Couldn’t they have chosen an actress in line to the main character, Alice?

She looks terrible. Is this a joke?

As if she could not get more pale than she already is…

i dont like her look but i love her hair color. thats amazing, ilove how pale the hair is. i dont even remember the alice in wonderland story, at least not details, i only remember basics like the rabbit, the queen of hearts and the cheshire cat.

I don’t like her for the role either. I get it with all the “white” but, not liking the eyebrows and lips. Would have rather they made all her make up white. Maybe they thought she would look frozen, but to me she looks like a dead person with no blood as if she was doing a scary movie instead, and not a childrens movie.

A really white person playing a really white character. I like her proportionately giant facial features.

She looks really awful. I like Anne, but I have always thought that she should wear less heavy dark make up around her eyes because it makes them look bulgier than they already are. Now her eyes looks fine in that picture, but gosh the white hair with her dark eyebrows are truly and simply UGLY!!!!!

love her! @ 02/03/2010 at 6:04 am

Seeing the trailer for this put me off from ever wanting to watch it. I’ll wait until a friend buys in on dvd and watch it then.

What are you guys talking about?! I think she looks amazing. She’s playing a character! That’s part of it. Her hair and skin are already very very pale, why would they add pale eyebrows and lips too?! She’d look dead. Even though she already kinda does lol. But seriously,Tim Burton is always about darkness and gloom so what were you waiting for? She looks great. I can’t wait to watch this movie.

@Sexy:

Yes, to everything you said!

I don’t like her, never did, never will.

Obviously this is the look they were going for, otherwise, they would have whitened out her eyebrows and lips too. It makes for great artistic contrast. She’s not supposed to look like Cinderella.

Wouldnt have chosen her for the role.
She looks a bit like a drag queen…

i think it’s gonna be a good movie

anne’s character creeps me out tho
but i think she fits the role pretty well

Can’t believe she got this part…
