Neil Patrick Harris: Surprise Oscar Performance
Neil Patrick Harris surprises many as he kicks off the Academy Awards with a song-and-dance musical opener for the 2010 Oscars held at the Kodak Theater on Sunday (March 7) in Hollywood.
The 36-year-old How I Met Your Mother actor, who hosted the Tonys and Emmys in the past, wore a black sequin three piece tuxedo, white shirt and bow tie by Dolce & Gabbana during the performance.
Earlier in the week, rumors were flying that Neil was going to perform at the Oscars. But those rumors were presumably squashed based on his Twitter.
“I will not be performing a duet with Martin Short to open the Oscars,” Neil tweeted. “Misinformation, I’m afraid.”
After his surprise performance, Neil got back on his Twitter and quipped “I told you I wasn’t doing a duet…”

Why was he there?
LOVED HIM!
BUT, Hugh Jackman sang better during last year’s opening.
He is a god! NPH, I dream of NPH (and me).
VERY HOT
neil was awesome.. i loved him
betty he was there because he’s proven he can host an awards show better than just about anyone, can act and sing and dance, is funny, charming, and yes, entertaining. Also, it was a fun, unexpected zing to start the show, and he is well-liked by people.
He is ON FIRE and I love it.
He has totally turned the child star cloud into glorious sunshine. GOOD FOR HIM!!!
Unfortunately, he sang off key…
That’s the girl from SYTYCD, I think. I forgot her name.
CANNOT SING.
Singing requires a good voice.
Made no sense, was awful.
He performed horribly and everyone in town is talking about it.
Did no one see him at sound check? This did nothing for his career, and will have everyone questioning his ability to direct a musical.
This gaff was worse than attempting to have Taylor swift sing with Stevie at the Grammys.
Hugh Jackman shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath as this half talent. NPH is a sitcom actor, and anyone that thinks he could handle Oscar hosting duties, knows nothing.
N. Patrick Harris was awful. Isn’t the Kodak theater where Idol hopefuls who couldn’t sing were eliminated? So how does this “guy” get to do the Oscars? Sorry dude, it was pitchy. Bad opening for a show. Great opening for a loser who can’t act or sing.
The jokes weren’t funny — which is the worst sin. It was crass, bad-natured and openly vulgar — and simply not well performed. The Oscar show used to celebrate the movies. Now it celebrates the egos. No wonder they’re losing audience.
@Hmmmm: you outta check him out in sweeny todd – yeah….the guy can actually sing…
I like NPH but the opening was awful. He was off key and audience didn“t look like they enjoyed it. He is a TV actor, NOBODY except HIMYM viewers and those few people watching the Emmys and Tonys have ever heard of him. And I am not sure if it was a smart move for him. He will be typecast as a host and I am not even sure if he belongs to a movie awards. Sorry.
Bring back Hugh next year, please.
he is fabulous
Gorgeous!
btw, he was named as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2010.
I like NPH but the opening was not as good as expected….
