Letterman Extortionist: Six Months of Prison Time

David Letterman‘s extortionist, Joe Halderman, pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny and will serve six months in jail.

The 52-year-old producer read a prepared statement in court saying that he attempted to extort $2 million from the late night host by threatening to disclose personal information about him.

“I feel great remorse for what I have done,” Joe said (via Variety), apologizing to Dave, his family and Joe’s former girlfriend, Stephanie Birkitt.

In addition to jail time, Joe will complete 1,000 hours of community service. If convicted at a trial, he could have faced up to 15 years in prison.

Yeah, I’m sure his “remorse” is real – Sorry he got “caught”, sorry he’s in jail, sorry he embarrassed his loved ones (if he has any). He certainly wasn’t expecting Letterman to say “NO” to blackmail & admit what he did live on TV.

I wonder how much the enquirer would have paid him for the scoop?

@nursesdate: I don’t know how much he would have gotten from the Enquirer but he would have gotten SOMETHING!! In this case, he ended up with no money, no career and no freedom for six months. And deservedly so!!

David Letterman doesn’t have a shred of personal or professional integrity, and I will never watch his show, again.

just remember kids, its not blackmail if you get a lawyer, like Gloria Allred to do it for you. good to know!

I’m glad he got caught and punished, but I cant help wonder what the circumstances were that pushed him to do this in the first place. I guess I’ll have to wait for the TV movie.
