Zoe Saldana Covers 'Essence' Magazine April 2010

Zoe Saldana is all smiles on the April 2010 cover of Essence magazine.

Here’s what the 31-year-old actress had to share with the mag:

On sex: “Love it, love it, love it-can’t live without it! I love sex. I love skin. I don’t believe the body is something to hide. I think in American society we’re messing up our kids by taking away the education on and awareness of our sexuality and replacing it with violence, guns and video games-and we’re breeding little criminals.”

On love: “I’m more of a punch-drunk-love kind of girl. I mean punch as in that pow, that jolt, that kick in the gut. I like things that are severe, passionate and extreme.”

Agree with her view on sex and violence. Amen!

  • original lexy

She’s very pretty and talented. Not sure that’s the best picture of her but she still looks great!

  • LuckyL

Lovely, but I wish you would post more of the interview. Thanks Jared.

  • http://Website Stella

I love Zoe! I’m looking forward to getting this Essence magazine.

Also, I totally agree with Zoe about American society making sexuality seem vulgar yet it glorifies violence.

  • hjhjh

did they really ask her if she liked sex? how classy!

  • Ladyb

    hjhjh…THANK YOU.

  • *.*

    love her.
seriously, she’s so straightforward and honest, it’s extremely refreshing.

  • happy girl

    she seems bland to me.

  • Celia

I love her! She’s gorgeous! I’m so jealous that she used to date Orlando Bloom.

  • ++Logan++

Virgins are so B.C (Before Christ)

Sex is awesome when you have it with someone you know, trust, love and are attracted too :)

  • Spanky 29

i liked her till she opened her mouth, she has megan fox syndrome

  • hair?

    is that her real hair?

  • Janeth

@hair?: Yes! She isn’t black…. Not saying that black people don’t have long hair or anything but She isn’t black!

  • melissa b

    @Spanky 29: I agree.

  • melissa b

@Janeth: what is she then? Serioulsy I wanna know.

  • shane

so she wants more hoes running around?

  • not black?

she wouldn’t be on a the cover of a black magazine., and by the way many black women have long hair. I read somewhere she is part black and part cuban.

  • ManistH0n

She is Black. She is an afro latina. Has african and latin blood (probably spanish) in her at least.
People are weird. They think you cannot be both like in the US when indeed, jut like Asians, Indians, Arab, Europeans, who ALL can be Latines too which is a culture not a race.

  • tweety

aah don’t be so prude. some people just love sex and it’s perfectly normal. hey at least she’s being honest about it!

  • Dreads

@++Logan++: Agreed. @Janeth: I knew it…but what’s her ethnicity? I’m curious to know. It’s kinda degrading to ask if it’s her real hair….I mean, just like her, I’m kinda dark-skinned and I’m multi-ethnic (white, black, Indian and Chinese) and people think it’s not my hair when I straighten it because it’s originally wavy/curly. But it is. And it’s not short. But anyway asking if it’s her real hair is degrading for black people. Some black people do have long hair you know. But yeah, I have to admit also that some use weaves a lot. ANYWAY, Zoe is so damn pretty. I really love her. But I think she’s a little too thin. If she gained a tiny bit of weight, she’d be perfect. She’s so gorgeous. @Celia: Whaaaaat? She dated Orlando Bloom?! I didn’t know that! I knew they were in a movie together but I didn’t know they dated in real life WOW. But oh well, they make a cute couple. Both hot.

  • Vera

She is black. Afro Dominican. Afro-black Dominican/Puerto Rican ( culturally form the Dominican Republic/Puerto Rico).

I am black, but I am Afro-Guyanese. I have the book she looks lovely inside, not alot of makeup and an awesome interview! Buy ESSENCE!

  • jordyy

    shes dominicann
she said that she lived there for a few years

  • blah

Okay let me correct you. She is black. Her race is black her ethnicity is dominican. I am domincan and we are black. Read her interviews she will tell you her self.

And yes that is her real hair. The people of the Dominican Republic come in all shades of brown. Some have african heritage.

So please dont speak what you dont know. You obviously know nothing of the domincan culture

  • Sacha

@tweety: “some people” who DOESN’T love sex???? If you don’t, it’s bc you or your lover aren’t doing something right lmao.

  • ………

Her smile always looks so forced.

  • JadaMoon

After her comments about “rape” I lost all respect for this woman. She needs to keep her gob shut.

  • Janeth

One thing for sure, she isn’t Puerto Rican. She is too good for that so don’t even think about calling her a Puerto Rican.

  • Real Spaniard

Dominicans were slaves but not as long as Puerto Ricans were. They were slaves much longer than the Dominicans. She doesn’t looks Spanish in the least to me Spanish are Europeans and looking at her complexion and facial features she does not look Spanish. She looks like the people the Spaniards enslaved.

  • Vera

Wow your a mess! Your a either a really young silly teenager or a stupid adult. that comment was so ignorant.

  • Ortiz

There is no one single monogamous Latin culture that is a myth!

  • ?

    @JadaMoon: …what did she say? : /

  • Amapola

This is what Zoe says about her ethnicity…go to:
“Yo soy una mujer negra” =I AM A BLACK WOMAN!
Santo Domingo was once a slave island. Google it.

  • Josie

just what we need, another black girl reinforcing the jezebel stereotype. sigh.

  • Amapola

When I go to the D.R., the press in Santo Domingo always asks, “¿Qué te consideras, dominicana o americana?” (What do you consider yourself, Dominican or American?) I don’t understand it, and it’s the same people asking the same question. So I say, time and time again, “Yo soy una mujer negra.” (“I am a black woman.”) [They go,] “Oh, no, tú eres trigueñita.” (“Oh no, you are ‘dark skinned’”) I’m like, “No! Let’s get it straight, yo soy una mujer negra.” (“I am a black woman.”)
This is how she describes herself on
She is a black woman whose parents came from Dominica like my family.

  • new Jersey

Zoe is an American and was born in New Jersey she moved to the Dominican Republic to live for 7 years only and to study dance.

  • ECK!

  • ECK!

  • Vera

    @new Jersey:

Yea , she also did an independent movie set in NJ called Premium, which was really good for an indy movie. In the article in ESSENCE, she does a really cool interview from A-Zoe she seems to be a cool lady.

  • mickey

She should have also been on that Vanity Fair cover with all those up and coming actresses, but I guess she wasn’t fair enough.

  • Teresa

Santo Domingo=Slave island for centuries. Slavemasters surname does not make you Spanish. It makes your ancestors the property of the slaveholding Spanish Masters.

  • happy girl

Here we go again. Heaven forbid there is a post about a woman of color and not have a race debate to divide people. Seriously, how old are some of the trolls? Here are the facts, Zoe’s mother is Puerto Rican and her father is Dominican. She was born in the states but spent years in the Dominican Republic so she knows the Dominican Republic more than Puerto Rico. She came out of the womb of a Puerto Rican woman. She has said she is black. So if that is what she says, then we have to accept it. Cuba, Dominican Republic, Panama and Brazil have some of the highest numbers of black Latinos. There are many, many black Latinos. Also, black women – and my black friends are proof of this – comes in all shades, hair types and looks. Some are whiter than me and they have no idea who was white in their family! My girlfriend is freckled face, green eyes and blonde but everyone in her family is black! It just happens. Open up your world and you will see all kinds of people. Or read a book. lol.

  • Trey

Got tha copy in the mail 2daee

  • Pardo From Brazil

Brazilians are not Latinos so don’t include them in the same category like Puerto Rico. They do not have a Hispanic culture, history or race. The culture of Brazil are a combination of several European countries and Nigeria. The largest group in Brazil are mixed race African and European but most of the European mix have nothing to do with Spain. The history of Brazil is European and Nigeria.

  • happy girl

Pardo: Brazilians are Latinos as the Latin culture is made up of Spain and Portuguese influence. Brazilians are Latin American. I took Latin American hsitory classes and Brazil is the most studied country because it is the largest. And yes, Brazil has had the largest black population in Latin America. It also was the last Latin country to abolish slavery. And the blacks are not just from Nigeria who were brought to Brazil. Most were of the Yoruban tribe and Nigeria was not the only place Yorubans were found. Also, you forgot Native Americans as part of the Brazilian mix..

  • Rosales

She never said she was a Puerto Rican woman you don’t know what you are talking about.

  • happy girl

I have no stake in this. I happen to know someone who has worked with her and they confirm this too. Anyway, do the research, Zoe’s mom is Puerto Rican. It’s a fact. Who cares anyway? But her mother is Puerto Rican and her father Dominican. Sorry, it’s a fact.

  • pop86

This is not anthropology thread, but a thread about Zoe.

She looks beautiful. Can’t wait to see her up-coming projects.

  • Rio

Just because they speak a Latin based language does not make them Hispanic. The Romanians speak a Latin language and they are not Hispanic. Hispanics trace back to their Spanish slavemasters, at least the Puerto Ricans do because Brazil has nothing to do with Spain. And the Portuguese people are European with their own language, customs, country and everything else so stop trying to make them Hispanic. The people and culture of Brazil is decidedly African with non-Spanish European thrown into the mix and yes, they had indigenous Indian tribes there before the Africans and Portuguese arrived but they are not Latino/Hispanic. Just because your country is in South America that does not make you Hispanic. British and French Guiana aren’t Hispanic either. You need to learn the truth because your culture is Hispanic but not Brazil!

  • Rio

The black and mixed race people of Brazil do not have a Latin culture they have an African European culture. A white man born in China is still a white man he is not Chinese.
