Miley Cyrus: The Internet Wastes Your Life

Miley Cyrus has opened up about why she closed down her Twitter account and how she’s enjoying life more these days.

“I’m telling kids, don’t go on the internet,” the 17-year-old Disney starlet tells Movieline. “It’s dangerous, it’s not fun, it wastes your life, and you should be outside playing sports or something.”

Miley continued, “I just think it’s kind of lame. I feel like I hang out with my friends and they’re so busy taking pictures of what they’re doing and putting them on Facebook that they’re not really enjoying what they’re doing. You’re going to look back and have a million pictures, but you’re not going to be in any of them. Because you’re not having fun, you’re too busy clicking away. So I think just enjoy the moment you’re in, and stop telling people about it. Just enjoy it.”

DO YOU THINK the Internet wastes your life and is kind of lame?

I’m still baffled by this piece of white trash and how anyone with a marginal amount of talent can become so successful. I’m frightened by the amount of pimps out there who pose as parents a la Lindsay Lohan’s parents and this annoying girl’s folks. It’s a damn shame what the entertainment industry has turned into that people like this are invited to attend the Academy Awards.

  • Maria

    SHE is lame

  • ck

The next time I think bout going to Itunes and downloading one of her songs, I will remember that the internet wastes my life. Thansk for saving me some $$ Miley ;)

  • Kate Bosselin

why is it mysteriously legal for this girl to bang 2o years olds when she was 15, 16, and now 17???

  • f

duh, not everybody is like this, miley

  • Ben

I think it’s true. I used to enjoy life so much more before the internet era. Nowadays, people are spending too much time trying to live in the world wide web just because everybody else does, and they will eventually forget how to actually live life.
I am one of the victim and I cannot find a way out… Hence, me reading justjared, me going on facebook etc… it’s becoming my way of life and i don’t really like it…

  • Ellie

That was actually a smart comment from the peanut gallery

  • Wtf

What an ignorant little brat, she probably closed her twitter because she got so many people telling her the truth about how stupid she is.

Only she dislikes the internet because no one on it likes her, lol.

The web is a powerful tool, and unlike her, some of us know how to use it and control ourselves, and not be sucked in 24/7 like she probably was. So she needs to shut up and stop giving her opinion on things because they’re so ‘lame’.

  • ally

“i’m telling kids”? Note to Miley: YOU ARE A KID.

  • Roar

“DO YOU THINK the Internet wastes your life and is kind of lame?” I don’t know why but this phrase makes me laugh…

  • Megan

I personally think she’s just hypocritical because she use to do all those things on the internet. She had spent so much time making those YouTube videos, which also included her mocking some great stars who currently use the internet. Her fan base is also based on the internet. If it wasnt’ for the internet, she wouldn’t have been as “popular” as she is right now. I definately agree that Facebook is currently take-over the media and the world, but it’s revolutionizing connection. So, what she thinks its “Lame” (Which personally thinks that she should use the internet to look up a better word, but then again it complements her IQ), could possible helpe create new inventions for future.

  • it’s me

honestly, i really think she’s right. i don’t like twitter or facebook. it’s really wasting ur time.

  • Ashley

You tell them Miles! We have become so obessed with the internet! people feel the need to check their facebook page every mintue and check their twitter. I do it myself as well. The internet is both good and bad!

  • Tealeaf

When this dude dumps her, she will be back twittering

  • marija

    Actually – well said.

  • Lisa R

I have to disagree with Miley on this topic. I believe that kids can have fun on the internet if it is used correctly. Meaning that kids should use the internet for homework, watching videos, finding out about contest by their favorite celebrities and etc. But one things kids should not do is to write or say something hurtful to others. I feel like the internet helps us find what we need for everyday life, like videos, shopping online and world news.

My problem with Miley saying that “the internet wastes your life and that you should go outside and have fun ” is that i dont think she sees that we, regular people, do have fun and go out and hang with our friends. Because she is a celebrity and is 17, she can go anywhere she wants, but her fans that are younger than her, cant. I feel like she thinks that the kids can take charge and go anywhere but in reality the parents control their kids to where they go and what they do. She needs to see that not everyone can go out when they feel like it. Also, Kids and teens dont stay on the internet 24/7, teens have jobs, they hang with friends go and party; kids have school, they play sports, play outside and spend time with family.
I dont get how she doesnt see that kids and teens do go out and have fun.

  • lucas

@Maria: I don’t know about that. Totally dissing the Internet is a tad much but she is right that some kids are obsessed with tweeting and facebooking every second instead of a couple of snaps of the gang, put the phone/camera away and just having fun. And given the number of kids pushing obese weights, having someone who, like it or not, is seen as a teen role model pushing kids to get outside and move their growing butts is a good thing.

Perhaps folks wouldn’t be so knee jerk about it if she’d pushed moderation rather than either extreme.

  • MollyMakeout

the internet only wastes your time if you let it
going online doesn’t necessarily mean going on a gossip site
you can do other, more worthwhile things on the internet

  • lucas

@ally: well are kids her age, who like to think they are in fact adult enough to control themselves, going to listen to another kid like them, or an real adult making demands.

  • alexis

don’t like the girl, but she makes a valid point

  • Megan

    @Lisa R:
I totally agree with your statement.

  • Keep it Real

Miley is completely worthless but she is kinda right. The internet is fine in moderation. It’s just way to easy to get hooked on because you can find out info on every possible topic 24/7. All the real news sites, gossip sites and fan sites are constanly updating so there is this constant outletfor escape. The internet also welcomes everyone. You can be fat, ugly, stupid, beautiful, or smart and be welcomed (unlike the real world). No need to work on your own personal development with the internet. I guess even an idiot like Miley can be right sometimes.

  • Lisa R

Also i have a facebook, twitter and myspace but it doesnt waste my time. I can chat to people that i havent seen in awhile like old classmates from elementray and middle school. i can also see what my friends are up to if i dont have their numbers.
I think it all depends on who you are to think that the interent is fun or just a waste of time

  • cady

since when does miley think the internet is lame? is she not the same girl who used the “lame” internet to post semi-clothed, sexual, provocative pictures of herself? i guess when that freedom was taken away, the internet lost its appeal. she is a talentless hack. aren’t her 15 minutes over already?

  • Katha

LOL, I highly enjoyed this piece.
I guess it depends on how you use the internet. It can be a waste of time but it can be useful. The internet doesn’t consist of Twitter and Facebook only. I guess she has no clue at all.

  • RaisingChild

    Its kind of true!

  • http://! ivanka

hey miley you’re a kid! stop acting like if u were older

  • Endrys

i agree with her.. i wich i could shut down the computer more often!

  • Jess

You take pictures to capture moments.. not purse your lips and pout at the camera whilst lying on your bed. She tries so hard to put words in her mouth that don’t even make sense. Just be yourself kid.

  • Francia

… actually it is smart observation!

But “Kids” ??? 3/4 of the people on FB and twitter are adults … LOL

  • pup

    What a hypocrite!

  • Kristina

haha LOL. thats funny how she acts sooo fckn clever. if u spend all ur time on the internet, not talking to ur firiends and and have no life at all and take pictures all the time and tweet them and do shit like that, maybe then its lame.. stupid miley, she just made me dislike her even more, pretending to be a smartass.

  • Jeannified

Yeah, you twit…you’re just busy being in front of a camera on TV or on the red carpet, (which still ends up on TV) ALL of the time. Like you can talk! Just because people put pics on Facebook, doesn’t mean that they don’t have a life! Ugh!

  • alexa

ngl i really agree with her

  • shannon

honestly it’s the easiest way to find out things you don’t want to.. i literally have to take myself away from the computer so i dont snoop on facebook and see what’s going to hurt me.

  • unbelieveable

To all you haters does it make u feel good and strong to say nasty things about a 17 year old. Does it make you feel better about yourselves

  • D

WOAH, people give her a break. I can see where she is coming from and I do agree that the internet is used too much. She’s not saying don’t use it at all, she’s saying about people who are always using it instead of having fun.

  • GracieLou

i have to agree somewhat… there should be a certain age to allow kids on the internet… that is totally up to the parents. but allowing them on so early completely takes over their lives. I personally cannot stand kids who are always online- playing games, facebooking, myspacing, twittering, IMing, blogging, etc… there are other things to do, read a book, or go outside, play sports (like she said).
Now since phones are capable of web browsing, it’s even harder to pry them away from the internet.
The internet is not all bad though. It comes in handy for news and research. There just needs to be moderation.

  • earl

Right on Miley!!!! Facebook is annoying and people are trying so hard to prove they exist through it. Just enjoy your life and stop pressing your ongoings into other peoples faces. Unless ofcourse, you’re rich and famous cuz then it’s guilty pleasure to observe the fashion.

  • apO

I agree with her to a point also. First of all, i don’t think she’s trying to act like an adult and preach. She’s a kid still and she knows that other kids will listen to her and she’s putting out good advice. My nephew gets on the internet and waste hours on it. I know when i was a kid that i didn’t have a computer and life was better. I was outside all the time just playing and having a good time. Of course the internet can be good for research, studying and just using it in moderation. However, she does make a good valid point. People shouldn’t hate on her for her giving out good advice.

  • Ann

    i hate her

  • Chloe

I agree. I went to a Muse concert this weekend, and this guy next to me was checking his iPhone so often to use Facebook and ESPNSportsCenter. He should’ve just stayed home and let someone else have his seat.

  • rock_chick_chic

kids should go out in have fun? really miley maybe you should come and see glasgow the council gets rid of play parks to make space of car parks, young kids have nowhere to play these days, all alot of them do is sit around and get drunk. so personally i would rather kids stay in doors and play on the computer least they arent going round attacking people, like alot of them do in glasgow.

  • Kay

When she was busy taking pictures, youtube videos, twittering, it obviously wasn’t a waste of time. Should everyone boycott her MileyWorld crap? She definitely wouldn’t be happy when the money stops coming in

  • fine

just sayin’ I agree with her (i do) then I stop going to her crappy movies, people stop buying her bad music and watching her kiddie TV shows and wasting their lives,,, then um, she’s nothing special, poor like most people, and nobody listens to a GD thing she has to say

  • Go Ask Alice

    I agree with Naima #1.

HOWEVER, Miley makes some sensehere in that Twitter and other things like are really just too much about taking out of life to post up what you are doing.
    It is too much time.

  • natt

At last this little girl is making wise statement. But dear doesn’t mean you’re growing up your badass, nip slip and one thousand boyfriend’s past is going to go away. YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN’T HIDE. So just face it instead of deleting everything cause it just shows you’re a coward (:

  • saphira

I have to agree with her on this point. Even when used in a supposedly meaningful way, I still find the act of sitting in front of a screen for prolonged periods to be a complete drain. Having said that, time to go get some fresh air!

  • jared fan

I totally agree with her! Couldn’t have said it better myself!! Take it from me sitting here doing this instead of being out with my friends! I’ve noticed it does kinda take over your life!!

  • mer

Wow – how unexpectedly responsible from this otherwise awful role model. Good for her!
