  • Angie is Only 34

Angie is only 34 and her life-time box office exceeds many actresses YEARS and YEARS older than her. Not only that, she has managed to have six kids and get many, many awards. She works far less than many of her “peers” and makes far more money. In addition, she has her pick of projects and is not afraid to make a rated R movie with a tough subject matter. She has also taken very large chunks of time off and, when when she is ready to work again, the best of the best are clamoring to work with her. So, yeah, stop comparing her to others- esp JA. Such comparisons just make manny, who is older w/ no kids & tons more time, look even more pathetic.

    @karen:

Because those are the only 2 movies they have to compare. The rest of jolie’s releases kick Aniston’s untalented behind at the Boxoffice. Jolie’s Domestic lifetime is 1.4 billion while Aniston hasn’t seen a billion yet. Worlwide Aniston sees a lifetime gross of 1 billion but then Jolie’s Worlwide gross is 3 billion again she kicks Aniston’s fading A**. She we compare Marley & Me (her biggest hit of late) to Wanted? They use Changeling but they forget that Jolie also had 2 other movies that same year. Let’s talk about that shall we? hmmm:

Marley & Me – Total Worldwide gross-$242,717,113 (Very good jen)
    Wanted – Total Worlwide Gross-$341,433,252 (mmm…hmmm like I said kicked a**)

We could use Kung Fu Panda – $631,744,560 but that would REALLY make Aniston really saaaaad and pathetic. We should also remember that Jolie became the first actress in the 2008 Guinness World Records to make a billion dollars in one year at the boxoffice another feet Aniston will NEVER beat.

I say…since they both have a movie coming out this year again, lets compare. Salt vs Bounty Hunter. I wager Salt will see the upperside of 300 million while Bounty Hunter will barely make it past 130 million.

You do realize that there is an 8 hour time difference and that these pictures are not happening now right? and also just because JD went to a premiere doesn’t mean the whole family went, when he has to trun around and come right back to work in the next 2 days.

I like how she doesn’t ever offer any numeric proof of her theory. Find me the numbers that say X’s movies do well after theatrical release. They don’t because they barely do business at the box office. So how in the hell could they make money off DVD sales/rentals and tv revenue? No cable chanell is going to offer huge dollars to air X’s flix. They have minimal appeal beyond Lifetime, We and Oxygen. They don’t do well on PPV and Netfix can’t give the shite away for free. So where is the post-theatrical release $40-50mil going to come frome? Other than out of “AJ’s” ass, of course.

    boxoffice mojo A Mighty Heart

    CHANGELING:

    Production Budget: $55 million
    Domestic: $35,739,802 31.6%
    + Foreign: $77,254,202 68.4%

    ——————————————————————————–

    = Worldwide: $112,994,004

    A MIGHTY HEART:

    Production Budget: $16 Million

    + Foreign: $9,758,870 51.5%

    ——————————————————————————–

    = Worldwide: $18,935,657

But I don’t think Marianne Pearl wanted this movie done for the Boxoffice. She wanted her husband’s story told. So this movie sits on a pedistal of honor. It was done in honor of a lost love one.

lylian: I understand that TBH is not a bomb, but considering how much its promo was, how the fauxmance was shoved down our throats since like forever, with $21M TBH is still a fail — especially since the Wimpy Kid made a tad more with not much promo, no known stars, less budget. It’s not a bomb like Shite Happens, but still a fail.
    ————–
Why all this crapola about Brad cheating? How come no one and nothing has come up — no texts, no mistresses’ accounts of their trysts, no nothing. In these days of Tiger Woods and Jesse James, don’t you think that if a man of BP’s stature actually cheated, proofs would have come out by now? Any woman he “cheated” with would get more than the $30,000 that “Bombshell” received from InTouch.

    ITAWU.

It’s not a bomb (too bad) BUT DEFINITELY NOT A HIT. which I think thats what the two leading stars were really aching for, afterall, Dedn is already 41, with her recent 2 bombs, Sandra Bullock and Julia Robert are back , and newcomer Katherine Heigl is already overtaking her in popularity.

The opening is just so-so, of course Sony spokeman had to said they were satisfied , blah, blah …. with the result. But I think not.
With those omnipresent , large budget marketing, Sony definitely is expecting more .,

Well, Eddie Murphy crappy comedy , panned by critiis every where used to make a lot of money, until peoples get tired of those antics , and trash. Look, where is Eddie now. I give Dedn upmost another 2 years ,then she will be everywhere opening a Hotel.

I only projecting. In general, you can say that a movie will do at least 3 times his first weekend in that market. With 2 international markets (UK and Russia plus 6 minor markets), it makes 8 million. Then, it’ll do at least 24 million in these markets (UK, Russia, plus 6 minor markets). But there is still 8 major markets to open and a lot of minor markets, then you can say that it’ll do more than 50 million.
    .

ROTFLMAO. Would it be mean of me to point out that “AJ” has just regurgitating and spinning the EXACT numbers listed in THR’s international box office report from this afternoon? Yet, she STILL doesn’t explain how Sony is going to make up the difference is prod/mktg costs with INCOME in after-theatrical release sales. She just needs to stop while she’s behind.

No. 5 was Sony’s “The Bounty Hunter,” director Andy Tennant’s romantic husband-ex-wife comedy costarring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, which opened at 1,175 screens in eight markets for an estimated $8 million on the weekend. A No. 3 U.K. bow grossed $3.2 million from 397 sites while a Russian bow generated $3 million from 456 situations.

  • don’t bother

don’t even bother comparing ja’s films or box office numbers with angelina’s. it’s like comparing a broken down trailer with a luxury mansion. ja is not even in the same league. she tries really, really hard but it will never happen. it’s extremely insulting to angelina to be compared to that low class H O.

it’s just so unfortunate that brad made such a colossal mistake marrying that phoney. i’m sure if he could he would completely wipe out that period of his life. if it weren’t for that disaster of a marriage, no one would ever place ja and angelina in the same thought or sentence.

and more importantly, ja would have faded into oblivion after that sitcom ended. i hope that she’s grateful to brad for how far she’s gotten (not very far but much further than she ever would have done on her own). and now thanks to angelina, she’s still relevant. ugh. ugh. just so effing ugh.

    Passing Through @ 03/21/2010 at 8:54 pm
And about the rest of your post.
Only studios knows how much they make with tv and DVD worldwide.
I only repeat what I read: that, in general, studios expect to recoop marketing expenses with TV rights and DVDs.
Almost every movie need TV rights and DVD to make a profit. You can see in box officemojo (only a few movies make more than 2 times his budget). You can find Variety. I don’t remember the number, but I think that less than 20% of the movies make a profit only with box office.
But I don’t care if BH makes a profit or not. It will do, but it’s not important.
I’m talking about box office annalysis and that in many times you make bad annalysis. And it is important because we will have Angie’ s movie in a near future. Salt (a 100 million picture, I think) and The Tourist (a 60 million picture or less, cause GK said that it is a small budget picture). Salt will need 100 million USA, but The Tourist not.
If Salt do 100 million USA it will be a hit, but it’ll only be a big hit if it makes 300 million worldwide.
The Tourist will be a big hit with 200 million worldwide.
That’s it: different movies, different budgets and different box office potencials.
For example: You can’t expect the same box office of Alice for Salt. Alice is a 4 quadrants movies. Salt is not for kids, for example, than it can’t be a 500 million worldwide picture.

  • aj

    Passing Through @ 03/21/2010 at 9:42 pm
    You are not dumb.
    You know the difference.
8 million is The Hollywood Repoter number.
At least 50 million (with at least 24 million in the markets already opened) is my projection.
The Hollywood reporter article don’t make any projection, cause it’s too early.
The movie needs to open in more markets.
But, I’m sure that I can say at least 50 million, cause UK and Russian numbers are solids.
You can see that a lot of 100 million overseas pictures made less than 10 million total (not weekend) in these markets.

  • Maria

    @gracie:

    i totally agree with you!

last month they were front page breakup news. but look who was breaking up? Sandra and Jesse due to jesse’s cheating. Kate Winslet and SAm Mendes…Charlez Theron and her man. — THE REAL BREAKUPS not Brad and Angie. They’re living happily ever after with kids in tow. SUCK IT HATERS!

  • don’t bother

can you imagine how freaking perfect everything would be if it weren’t for ja? two ridiculously good looking, respected actors with 6 beautiful kids, doing incredible humanitarian work around the world. but no. tragically, there’s ja, like a freaking incurable, recurring s-t-d, breaking the freak out, whining for attention.

  • UGH Please

    @juju:

No they are not wrong more than 3 different sites posted the same numbers…for both films but if you have better numbers then post the numbers and shut the haters up. As far as i’m concerned it doesn’t matter jolie is still the QUEEN of the boxoffice.

  • Neil

    @aj:

I don’t dispute your logic and I will give you the benefit of the doubt as to your motives here but I think you too are jumping to conclusions if you think Sony is going to be happy about this movie. Remember this is the OPENING weekend of a movie with prospects of TERRIBLE LEGS. There is spin that we get fed and then there is the nervous reality of the money men. And as you say, you can’t have it both ways; she works for people who want the comfort of Avatar and have absolutely no interest in any kind of risky project. These people have no interest in films like A Mighty Heart. They are after the “sure’ thing and if an actress is only a borderline “sure” thing then she is in fact NOT a sure thing. Angie and Brad might lose money on a film but it is allowed in their case. Not so with Jen. She has been sold STRICTLY as a money making machine. Her investors will forgive anything but that.

  • aj

    lulu @ 03/21/2010 at 9:42 pm
You are right about Sony. They expected more. Cause this year, they only have two possible tentpoles (Salt and The Green Hornet).
Probably, this year Sony will do less than 1 billion USA and worst overseas (overseas, you can say that some of Sony’s movies will not do well, like “Dear John” and “Death at a Funeral”) .
And they have few movies this year: only four until april, none in May.

  • karen

  • Jaliah

I don’t know why Rachel is compared to Angelina Jolie. AJ can open a film because aside from her acting ability she has screen presence. Even when AJ isn’t the lead she is still the one that lights up the screen when she appears…case in point Girl Interrupted. Rachel opened Management and it closed in her face. She is a tv girl who stayed in a tv sitcom so long it limited and stunted her experience but she married an Alister and thought she was bigger than him….she is deluded and surrounds herself by sychophants….family is better because they are more likely to be candid…but Rachel doesn’t do family I guess she will meet with her mother at her mother’s funeral and maybe then regret being such a hard nosed, hard hearted, mean, unforgiving person especially when the rom-coms dry up and the sychophants move on to fresher, younger fields.

  • aj

    Neil @ 03/21/2010 at 10:08 pm
    I liked your post.
    Studios don’t like drama’s movies.
And they are doing less movies. Paramount, for example, are doing almost only tentpoles. They don’t like risks.
BH is not a riskie picture. Studios make a lot of romcoms. And, a lot of romcoms are midlevel hits. Only a few are hits (or big hits), but few lost money too.
Last year, I think that only two romcoms movies made more than 100 million USA (The proposal and It’s Complicated).
But there is a few midlevel hits (He’s not that into you, The Ugly Truth, etc).

Given how awful TBH is, the opening weekend needed to be big in order to make a profit. The way it was marketed, it need to open at 30 million or so. I have never seen a movie marketed this much. It was nonstop everywhere….

No studio will market this way and expect it to open in teens. Sorry…that’s idiotic. Otherwise, why not market small and hope to make even with ticket, DVD, and TV rights? I didn’t see much marketing for Repo-Man or Wimpy kid movie?

Studios now know that even with mass marketing and over 3000 theatres for Jen’s movie, she still cannot open big. Sorry, no studio is going to spend that much money on her again.

I predict Jen will no longer be a main draw and she will be forever the wife/girlfriend/best friend to the main draw.

If isony’s predicting a mid-teen opening as thye said, which I think tthat ‘s a good reason for saving face . It won’t throwed those amount of money in marketing, I bet the marketing must have cost more than the movie itself. which at least a minimum of 50 millions. They thought if Ugly truth and Fools gold could open on > 20 million, with Maniston supposed to be a biggger star than Heigl and Kate Hudson. , bountiless should open to a t least 30 . but blah. Maniston is not Katherine Heigl, she ‘s upmost on the same level as kate Hudson .
