Zoe Saldana Covers 'Nylon' Magazine April 2010

Avatar star Zoe Saldana is mellow yellow on the April 2010 cover of Nylon, on stands this week. The 31-year-old actress had this to talk about:

On moving from NYC to the Dominican Republic at age 9: “We went from this urban life to running around barefoot in the countryside and being taught how to gut fish. We were learning how to climb coconut trees – let me tell you, they are f–king dangerous!… I would do my homework in guava and mango trees.”

On learning dance as a child: “That was the beginning of a beautiful f–king romance. That was my Xanax, let me tell you… it put all my demons in order.”

On Hollywood casting: “When they say ‘We want to go white,’ they have a very smooth way of saying it, and the recent one is the word traditional. [I’ve heard] ‘Oh, you know, you’re just not what we were looking for, your skin is a little darker.’ Compared to what?! My skin is just my skin. It’s dark if you compare it to someone who’s lighter.”

On meeting [Avatar director] James Cameron: “I’m thinking he probably imagined some Amazonian girl [for Neytiri] – I had really long hair at the time – wearing really little s–t with like, a bow and arrow. I had no idea she was blue and nine feet tall. But for some reason, he was like, ‘You look so much like her!’”

    ugh, i wish these young starlets would stop swearing in interviews, it’s not cool or edgy, just lame and makes you look dumb.
    “oh let’s see how many F bombs i can drop in an interview” . lame lame lame.

  • Carrie

    Does she think just because she swears lots she sounds down to earth and cool? I for one don’t speak like that because I don’t have the vocabulary of a complete illiterate moron.

    She’s almost as bad as Keira Knightley

  • kinder,gentler Spanky

    @Josie: ITAWY! ugh, what classlessness

  • scrug

    bad cover for me! her face looks different!

  • Infamous

  • sandie

    Zoe is such a refreshing artist. She’s frank and honest in her interviews. It doesn’t sound like a rehearsed answer but real.

  • Carlos

    Love Zoe! She looks cute!

  • Dreads

    I don’t like the swearing either, it makes her look ugh classless. She’s very pretty even though she’s a tiny bit too thin.

  • F

    A beautiful woman who can swear and just be herself without caring
    what appearences obsessed people might think!

    I f-king love her!!! I’m getting so tired of “classy” starlets who think they are so pure that they can walk on the water. This gal has her own personality

    Never change, Zoe S.! : )

  • leonor

    i love her. she makes me so proud!!!

    @Josie: but Josie, it makes her so hardcore!! (rolls eyes). cursing is cool!

    I agree, cursing is just running out of words to say.

  • shaar

    Love her!!!!

  • yo sista

    She’s a cutie.

  • jason

    I guess she thinks swearing makes one cool and honest/real. For me she’s fake, she swears and talks a lot about sex to be talked about.
    I can’t respect or feel sympathy for people with poor vocabulary. Swearing is not pretty – it’s disrespectful towards readers and people who have to listen to her.

  • minz

    She’s too marga.

  • Khristi

    Jeez you people. What makes you the expert on how someone should present themselves-you sit behind your computers and spew that 1950s housewife crap that no one cares about. What is so trashy about a word? I’m sure you are all probably 10 years old or you use language the same as her. Let’s talk about her comments on Hollywood and the employment world in general. If you didn’t want a person of color for the job you shouldn’t have agreed to see me. I understand completely.

  • Iggles

    @Khristi: Thank you!
    It’s seems like people are harping on whatever they can to be negative.
    Good for Zoe and I hope she appears on more magazine covers. She’s a great actress and I love many of her movies (Drumline, Center Stage, Star Trek, Avatar). Bless wishes to her in the future!

  • Iggles

    @Iggles: LOL! Best wishes*

  • really

    LOVE HER, she real.

  • Doctor Bilco

    She needs a nose job it’s huge.

  • Hollywood

    dark & ugly

  • reba

    @Josie: agreed

  • ericedis

    @Doctor Bilco:

    shut up. noone’s perfect. wow.

  • avatar sucks

    ‘You look so much like her!’ I would have smacked the fool if he told me i look like a iant alien. I hate this film it’s such a messed up version of colonialism but i do love zoe she shouldn’t have done this film

  • HoneyBear

    She’s a beautiful woman, but she should cut back the swearing mainly for the young readers. They look up to adults as good examples of how they should be. If the adults are going to be bad examples, then who are they going to look up to? It’s just simple courtesy. The cover itself is eh. It could be better.
