Ricky Martin: Gay and GLAAD

Earlier today, Ricky Martin revealed that he is gay. GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) president Jarrett Barrios has reacted to the news.

“When someone like Ricky Martin comes out, hundreds of millions of people now have a cultural connection with an artist, a celebrity and, perhaps most importantly, a father who happens to be gay,” Barrios said. “His decision to model this kind of openness and honesty can lead to greater acceptance for countless gay people in U.S., in Latin America and worldwide.”

Earlier in the day, Ricky publicly revealed his sexuality, saying, “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.”

DO YOU THINK Ricky Martin coming out will lead to greater acceptance of gay people?

DO YOU THINK Ricky Martin coming out will lead to greater acceptance of gay people?

NO. Its only Ricky Martin, not Jesus. It’s not like people didn’t have it figured out anyway. Good for him if he’s happy.

    awwwwwwww!!!!!!!

Water is wet. Grass is Green. Ricky Martin is gay. Yada Yada..

Best of luck to him. I hope this will encourage other celebs to come out as well…

  • one has to wonder

BRAD PITT COMING OUT AS A BAD DAD WILL LEAD TO GREATER ACCEPTANCE OF BAD FATHERS.

  • sandy

That was so obvious, I always knew!!!!! Not a sorprise

  • Ryan

No doubt the more people talk about it, the better – visibility alone, is incredibly important, but there are still THOUSANDS of closeted gay men and women, young girls and boys, living in fear. With every person, it’s one step forward but there are also still thousands who not can not tolerate, and enjoy lashing out, judging, boxing, spreading hate, campaigning against equality. I think a few more people will ‘come out’ this year, and I like to think we are moving forwards, towards acceptance and understanding, but I don’t know.

  • black beauty

duuuuuuuuuuuuuuh ricky we all knew u were gay 10 years ago but good for you

  • GoodGirl

    He absolutely cannot do it!

Who the hell do you think he is to make a change?

And as Geraldbean said, we already knew he was gay it’s not a scoop!

  • Kevin

I am 37 and gay. I came out at 15. People are just as hateful now as they were than. I kept thinking at 15 by the time my generation grew up that there would be acceptance. Nope. People are assholes.

  • Hmm

Uh! What world does he live in where he thinks that we didn’t know that already

  • AGA

I thought it was already pretty obvious that he was Gay from years ago.Good for him & his twin babies!!

  • http://isHotr.com Who isHotr

I don’t think it’ll lead to great acceptance. It’s a another gay man coming out in the celeb world. better question is who is hotr? Lance Bass or Ricky Martin – 2 teen pop phenoms from the 90s and early 00s, gay and proud!

Imagine Lance and Ricky as a couple?

  • sven

It’s not a surprise no, but congrats to Ricky that he can now live his life the way he wants to. Wish more gay celebs could come out of hiding.

  • LeviKlein

I like Ricky Martin. He is sexy, talented and seems to be a very good father. I don’t care about his sexual orientation, and I don’t think that people should care about it either. It’s something personal that people have no business in. However I do wish him the best.

  • tlc

Can someone tell me why most gay people are so angry and bitter? Just an observation.

  • Fact: Jen haters are dumb

    @tlc:

Because society lives to tear people down, they thrive on it.

  • Anon

It wasn’t a surprise that Ricky was gay. I’m glad he has came out, glad that he is the father of two beautiful twin boys. I hope that people will finally learn tolerance, unconditional love and acceptance everywhere. Good luck, God speed Ricky!

  • Alex

Kudos to Ricky for having the balls to come out in such a hateful society.

IM STILL IN SHOCK BUT IT DOES MAKE SENSE

    IT EXPLAINS A LOT!

  • kim

Ricky Martin is gay? Wow what a shocker :)

I think everyone on the Planet already knew Ricky was gay, even when he was hiding the fact. And its does’nt change the fact that he’s a great performer and will always have millions of fans.

  • anonymous

i think everyone already knew he was gay..but good for him for having the guts to say so..it won’t lead to greater acceptance though..we need someone more famous and a lot more powerful to get that kind of acceptance..

  • Tom

I respect someone like Ellen MUCH more who came out at the height of her sucess and show – and had to go through hell and ridicule and outrage and media stories claiming her gay would ruin her career forever, but she made it out and is much stronger for it.

  • anonymous

MANISTON FINALLY COMING OUT WILL DEVASTATE HER FEW HAGS BUT WILL BE A GREAT BREAKTHROUGH FOR LESBIANS EVERYWHERE. EVEN “AMERICA’S AGING SWEETHEART” CAN BREAK DOWN BARRIERS.

  • fya

it’s so hard to ‘come out’ when you have to be a particular way…
my friend jamie is a really sweet, friendly person, he came out a few months ago, a lot of people were shocked, a lot of us guessed. most people don’t look at him any different but there are those idiots at college who still shout cra.p like “fa**ot* across the cafeterias and corridors : |
he ignores it, and he’s a pretty popular guy anyway so they just look like fools.
if you’re a closeted ‘macho’ dude in sports, you face another prejudice.
if you’re an awkward closeted girl or boy, another. if you’re a muslim like my cousin, or come from a strict religious family, it’s SO scary.
if you’re a black closeted guy yet another. it’s so hard. i really admire people who are straight-up (lol i’m going to start saying gay-up from now on) honest either right at the start of their career or at the height.
i hate this world so much sometimes :’[

I have always adored him…love him even more now.

His music is terrible but good for him..

  • http://kennowen.blogspot.com/ ganymede30324

    When was he in?

  • IOU

This is nice and all, but he’s not really brave for admitting it now. If he was really brave, he would have admitted it at the height of his success.

  • …I n F a m o u s l y C o o l

…who fcuking cares that he “came out”.. he was born out! the world’s know he was gay for yearssssss! years ago before his career ENDED everyone knew damn well he drives up & down the chocolate-highway.
    ~
…by coming out now hes just making himself the butt of jokes.

  • Amber-louise

It doesn’t change my opinion on him. He’s good to his fans, seems like a great guy and a father so be it he gay or whatever.

  • laura

WHAT A FREQIN TRAGEDY. GAYS AND THEIR AFFECTED SYSTEMS!

  • santa

hopefully this won’t affect our engagement :S

  • Lisa2

I don’t have a problem that he came out, but now every interview he does will be about him being “gay”. I hope he doesnt get hounded about going public. Like most of you said, it wasn’t really shocking news. He is never seen with women although, I thought years and years ago he had a serious relationship with a woman? I can’t remember her name, but I think she was older than him at the time? This was when he was on General Hospital????

  • Sherri

I always knew but was in denial even though I never had a crush on him. Even back in his Menudo days. But I’m happy he was able to come out and not have to hide it anymore.

  • missy

    @tlc:

just jared, cheating with the thumbs up or down again. Why bother, dude, if you manipulate the results

    trying to keep you honest

  • cacey

Thank God he did not say he was a GAY AMERICAN, we ALREADY heard that………….

  • http://RickyMartin Ajay

What was Ricky thinking when he thought this be bad for his career?

This will make big impact on the world for other gays and lesbians who are hiding in their shells to finallly open up and be proud of who they really are.

Also his music should bring the gayer side of him than fake hollywood stuff.

  • ….

If he had had the courage to come out in 2000, he might still have a career. At the time I saw him as cowardly and was completely turned off. Everyone knew he was gay so he managed to turn off gay and straight fans alike by not being brave enough to come out. Coming out now smacks of desperation.

  • Taylo

    I think it’s old news

  • http://yahoo penknife

theres no big deal for such a thing. its already a “TREND” of coming out for gays. huh. that is no more an issue. KODOS for him. its up for every individual to be gay or to be straight. no more no less. its their choice of life.

  • guy port o bello

A famous singing idol – a comedian – a actor who is gay and who everybody can tell is ” gay ” and either is ” open ” or ” closited ” is ” NO ” shock to society when ” outted ” . Try somebody who is a ” jugde ” or a ” senior doctor ” or ” politician ” or ” mayor ” that person gets ” trashed ” with lables and back lash . Ricky Martin had ” fellow ” people like Sir Elton John and George Michael to give him support . His support team werent looking out for Ricky Martin but their own backs . Ricky Martin needs to cut his managers team and acknowlegde the ” public fans ” dont give a ” fat rats arse ” but love and support Ricky Martins music for who he is . Being ” gay ” is you are ” gay ” who gives a ” shit ” there is ” war ” happening in the world and many other ” issues ” more important .than being ” gay ” . We need to ” STOP ” pissing aroung with ” gay issues ” and think about what we can do to stop the wars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bunker

okay, who’s next? Evan Lysacek, Anderson Cooper… come on you guys can do it! Gold medalist and the gray hair golden CNN news anchor!!!

  • jk

    not news

  • Sophia

Proud of him for having the courage to speak about his personal life but honestly… are we shocked? hehehe

  • @ Laura

I’m not sure what you mean by “gays & there affected systems” If you mean they have some sort of disorder then you my friend are the one with a disorder and need some help. We are all human and should be afforded the same rights. Like no: 42 said there are far bigger issues going on in the world.

    @fya:
you should have a lot more to worry about because all homosexuals are disturbed, revolting, and an abomination under the eyes of our Lord. When man and woman were created I don’t believe he had homosexuals in mind because it was never supposed to be – period.
Your way of thinking is why there are sexual deviants, perverts, sick child molesters, you name it and your the reason why they exist. It is not natural at all — extremely repulsive like a bucket of maggots !!!!!!
UNHOLY and not at all worthy of his love ……how’s that for a response

  • KVB

Who cares in the 21st Century? Love the one you’re with….

  • Turner
