Ricky Martin: Gay and GLAAD

Earlier today, Ricky Martin revealed that he is gay. GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) president Jarrett Barrios has reacted to the news.

“When someone like Ricky Martin comes out, hundreds of millions of people now have a cultural connection with an artist, a celebrity and, perhaps most importantly, a father who happens to be gay,” Barrios said. “His decision to model this kind of openness and honesty can lead to greater acceptance for countless gay people in U.S., in Latin America and worldwide.”

Earlier in the day, Ricky publicly revealed his sexuality, saying, “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.”

DO YOU THINK Ricky Martin coming out will lead to greater acceptance of gay people?

NO. Its only Ricky Martin, not Jesus. It’s not like people didn’t have it figured out anyway. Good for him if he’s happy.

No doubt the more people talk about it, the better – visibility alone, is incredibly important, but there are still THOUSANDS of closeted gay men and women, young girls and boys, living in fear. With every person, it’s one step forward but there are also still thousands who not can not tolerate, and enjoy lashing out, judging, boxing, spreading hate, campaigning against equality. I think a few more people will ‘come out’ this year, and I like to think we are moving forwards, towards acceptance and understanding, but I don’t know.

I am 37 and gay. I came out at 15. People are just as hateful now as they were than. I kept thinking at 15 by the time my generation grew up that there would be acceptance. Nope. People are ********.

I don’t think it’ll lead to great acceptance. It’s a another gay man coming out in the celeb world. better question is who is hotr? Lance Bass or Ricky Martin – 2 teen pop phenoms from the 90s and early 00s, gay and proud!

Imagine Lance and Ricky as a couple?

It’s not a surprise no, but congrats to Ricky that he can now live his life the way he wants to. Wish more gay celebs could come out of hiding.

I like Ricky Martin. He is sexy, talented and seems to be a very good father. I don’t care about his sexual orientation, and I don’t think that people should care about it either. It’s something personal that people have no business in. However I do wish him the best.

It wasn’t a surprise that Ricky was gay. I’m glad he has came out, glad that he is the father of two beautiful twin boys. I hope that people will finally learn tolerance, unconditional love and acceptance everywhere. Good luck, God speed Ricky!

Ricky Martin is gay? Wow what a shocker :)

I think everyone on the Planet already knew Ricky was gay, even when he was hiding the fact. And its does’nt change the fact that he’s a great performer and will always have millions of fans.

i think everyone already knew he was gay..but good for him for having the guts to say won’t lead to greater acceptance though..we need someone more famous and a lot more powerful to get that kind of acceptance..

I respect someone like Ellen MUCH more who came out at the height of her sucess and show – and had to go through hell and ridicule and outrage and media stories claiming her gay would ruin her career forever, but she made it out and is much stronger for it.

it’s so hard to ‘come out’ when you have to be a particular way…
my friend jamie is a really sweet, friendly person, he came out a few months ago, a lot of people were shocked, a lot of us guessed. most people don’t look at him any different but there are those idiots at college who still shout cra.p like “fa**ot* across the cafeterias and corridors : |
he ignores it, and he’s a pretty popular guy anyway so they just look like fools.
if you’re a closeted ‘macho’ dude in sports, you face another prejudice.
if you’re an awkward closeted girl or boy, another. if you’re a muslim like my cousin, or come from a strict religious family, it’s SO scary.
if you’re a black closeted guy yet another. it’s so hard. i really admire people who are straight-up (lol i’m going to start saying gay-up from now on) honest either right at the start of their career or at the height.
i hate this world so much sometimes :’[
