Kelly Clarkson Talks Cigarette Sponsorship For Her Concert

Kelly Clarkson has responded to the attacks by the media over being sponsored by a cigarette company for her Jakarta, Indonesia concert on April 29.

The 27-year-old singer said, “So. my morning began with finding out that I am all over billboards, tv ads, and other media formats along side a tobacco company who unbeknownst to me is sponsoring my Jakarta date on my current tour. I was not made aware of this and am in no way an advocate or an ambassador for youth smoking. I’m not even a smoker, nor have I ever been. Unfortunately, my only option at this point was to cancel the show in order to stop the sponsorship. However, I can’t justify penalizing my fans for someone else’s oversight. This is a lose-lose situation for me and I am not happy about it but the damage has been done and I refuse to cancel on my fans. I think the hardest part of situations like this is getting personally attacked for something I was completely unaware of and being used as some kind of political pawn.”

Maybe Kelly can secure a new sponsor for her concert?

  • she’s a whale of a talent

Well, McDonald’s, and in particular and the Big Mac is sponsoring your weight gain

  • swimmer

You go Kelly, what a class act. And to “She’s a whale of a talent” you are a whale of an a**hole.

  • L

she hasnt cancelled. she says ‘HOWEVER I can’t justify penalizing my fans for someone else’s oversight.’

  • Me

She hasnt canceled her sponsorship! Please edit this article! It’s misleading!

If you read the rest of her blog, post what you’ve highlighted, she goes on to say that she wont penalize her fans because of the mishap, therefore her show will carry on which means so does the sponsorship. It’s a lose-lose situation for her but she’s a true artist and won’t disappoint fans who have waited for her to tour in their country for so long because someone messed up.

Accidents happen and she was unaware of this, it’s not fair that she’s had to bare the brunt of this. It was not her fault!

    We love you Kelly <3

  • Vida

I give Kelly a thumbs up….sad to disappoint the fans…but she does not want to be an advocate for smoking. She stood her ground and did what she had to do so that she is not representing something she is against. Hopefully another time she will be able to go to Jakarta.

    @she’s a whale of a talent:
Really? you’re going to attack a perfectly normal, talented girl because she’s not a string bean. It is ridiculous. She’s a SINGER, and a good one at that. She can weigh whatever she wants.

  • Amy

What an idiot? What does her weight have to do with anything related to this? She’s a singer not a model. Like you’re so perfect-idiot hiding behind a computer screen!

  • Sue

No one made a big deal about it when they sponsored Katy Perry?

She isn’t canceling, she is still going on with the concert. People need to lighten up!

  • sillyme

Oh, for goodness sakes, people will just protest over anything these days. I guess next we’ll hear people complaining about McDonalds or Wendys sponsoring concerts, because they have too much salt in their food or too much fat or something. Can’t have a video game sponsor either because, oops, we don’t want to encourage kids to sit in front of a TV all day and getting fat. Or, Toyota is sponsoring you? Well, you do know they’re responsible for the deaths of X people because of faulty gas pedals.

Am I the only one who cares about this woman’s health?

  • Jslin

#11 You couldn’t care less about Kelly’s weight, you came here to criticize her for something that isn’t even your business in the first place. And because the majority didn’t “follow” you, you are now trying to pass your rude comments off as “concern”? Please.

  • puffy

I hear she’s really really big in Indonesia….giant in Australia… huge in Japan……she’s just fat everywhere she goes

  • Dee

Maybe you should try reading it once again…

“…However, I can’t justify penalizing my fans for someone else’s oversight. This is a lose-lose situation for me and I am not happy about it but the damage has been done and I refuse to cancel on my fans.”

    kelly is an amazing person!
i recentely went to one of her concerts and wow! just wow!
her voice is amazing and she’s so funny and REAL!

  • http://getmebrian Brian

Seriously — SHE HAS NOT CANCELED THE CONCERT. But what she should do is demand all the tobacco imagery be removed from the concert premises and make a public statement ordering her management company to never allow for tobacco sponsorship in the future.

  • Tam

@she’s a whale of a talent and @puffy – Get a life. Kelly is fine, she looks fine, and this piece has nothing to do with her appearance anyway.

Back on topic, I’m pretty sure she’s saying that she won’t be canceling her Indonesian stop ’cause she doesn’t want to disappoint the fans. It’s a lose-lose ’cause she still has to carry on with the cigarette sponsorship and ’cause she has to deal with all the criticism of carrying on with the show. Kelly’s a class act and she put her fans first foremost in this situation.

  • Serena

You may just want to be careful about this one Kelly. If you ever do decide to diet you may just end up chain smoking.

  • w

Love Kelly! Beautiful and incredibly talented. A real class act…unlike the posters here attacking her weight. I mean, really, that’s quite lame and completely immature. Grow up. People come in all shapes and sizes…it’s the size of her talent that matters.

  • Nandy

    @she’s a whale of a talent: @Serena: @puffy:
I can’t believe human beings can go so low. and so mean. its because of people like you so many people are suffering from eating disorders.

  • amy

are they illegal? whats the difference with being sponsored by beer or alcohol? not much!

  • LYNN

Why should she cancel her concert? She does not smoke but a lot of people do. Everybody in this world knows smoking as well as other vices that are being advertised are bad for you. She is an entertainer, why ask her to get political. I dont see you people asking politician to not take tobacco money even tho these politician are suppose to be speaking for the people. We vote in people to speak for the people ahbout these concerns. leave kelley alone. I am glad she will continue her concert. She does not want some organization to volunteer her as being a spokeman for being against cigaretts.

  • REM

I understand the situation she’s in. I think a sincere gesture would be if she donated some of the money she gets in this tour to non-smoking education directed towards teens.

  • Lizzy

It’s her label that makes these decisions. It’s not Kelly’s fault that they went through with some sponsorship that they might have known was going to be controversial. And for all of those attacking her size, look in the mirror. She’s perfect the way she is because she has actual talent where as you only sit and attack her with a keyboard.

  • troi

Jared, the concert is April 29th. It isn’t that easy to find a new sponsor that is willing to put out millions of dollars at the last minute.

She doesn’t smoke and doesn’t condone it. She has chosen not to disappoint her fans.

And believe me, if you’ve ever been to Indonesia–they smoke like fiends. Like we used to in the USA.

After the US got strict on smoking, the tobacco companies took their product overseas where they advertise and push smoking relentlessly.

  • jean

Really, i will be upset if Kelly cancel the show in Indonesia. Just for you to know, only cigarette company who is willing to sponsor artist from abroad. We don’t have choice. I, my self, don’t like to smoke, but… we don’t have choice to let that cigarette company sponsor that kind of event if we want to see our idol!

  • Jessica

    I love her body
