Ryan Murphy is urging people to boycott Newsweek for publishing a homophobic article last week, which declared gay actors can’t play straight. (Kristin Chenoweth has already condemned the article.)

The 44-year-old Glee creator issued this open letter (via EW):

“I would like to join my good friend Kristin Chenoweth on her condemnation of a recent Newsweek article written by Mr. Ramin Setoodeh, in which Setoodeh basically says that out gay actors should go back into the closet and never attempt to play straight characters. This article is as misguided as it is shocking and hurtful. It shocks me because Mr. Setoodeh is himself gay. But what is the most shocking of all is that Newsweek went ahead and published such a blatant homophobic article in the first place…and has remained silent in the face of ongoing (and justified) criticism. Would the magazine have published an article where the author makes a thesis statement that minority actors should only be allowed and encouraged to play domestics? I think not.

Today, I have asked GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios to stand with me and others and ask for an immediate boycott of Newsweek magazine until an apology is issued to Sean Hayes and other brave out actors who were cruelly singled out in this damaging, needlessly cruel, and mind-blowingly bigoted piece. An apology should also be issued to all gay readers of the magazine…steelworkers, parents, accountants, doctors, etc…proud hardworking Americans who, if this article is to be believed, should only identify themselves as “queeny” people (a word used by Setoodeh in the article) who stand at the back of the bus and embrace an outdated decades old stereotype.

Mr. Setoodeh has recently Twittered that he is a fan of Glee, the show I co-created with Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk…the show on which Mr. [Jonathan] Groff plays the straight love interest to Lea Michele, a casting choice embraced by fans and critics alike which Mr. Setoodeh has taken issue with.

I extend an open invitation to Mr. Setoodeh to come to the writers room of our show, and perhaps pay a set visit. Hopefully then he can see how we take care to do a show about inclusiveness…a show that encourages all viewers no matter what their sexual orientation to go after their hopes and dreams and not be pigeonholed by dated and harmful rhetoric…rhetoric he sadly spews and believes in. Hopefully, some of the love we attempt to spread will rub off on Mr. Setoodeh – a gay man deeply in need of some education – and he not only apologizes to those he has deeply offended but pauses before he picks up his poison pen again to work through the issues of his own self loathing. Give me a call, Ramin…I’d love to hear from you. I’ll even give you a free copy of our Madonna CD, on which we cover “Open Your Heart,” a song you should play in your house and car on repeat.

    Good on you Ryan!!!!

  • em

In my opinion Jonathan is very believeable as Jesse plus Jesse and Rachel are one of my favorite couples on Glee!

  • Donovan

I’m not reading all that. But go gay people!

  • Nic

I fully support you Ryan, so WELL said!

  • Joanne

jared are you gay? just curious

  • Ana

    That was long.

I read the article and didn’t perceived it as homophobic but more on about lack of talent (which movie/tv critics do all the time). Oh well…

    Good luck with that Ryan.

  • You’re Right

    I will support the boycott

  • sherbet

    I agree with Ryan

Neil Patrick Harris is gay and his portayal of Barney on how i met your moth is very convincing

news week are talking out their a*s

  • Paul E. Stanley

I think I’ll go buy multiple copies of Newsweek. Screw you’re stupid boycott.

  • karen

Paul E. Stanley – first learn how to spell “you’re” (it’s YOUR) before you call anyone, or anything, “stupid.”

  • mastik8

Ironically, I heard the author of said article is gay himself.

  • kate

I’ve read that Newsweek has gone under and has been put up for sale, so what is the point of a boycott?

  • Halli

Idiots. Newsweek allows columnists and writers to write their own opinion pieces. Much like an Op-Ed in any newspaper. If you want to boycott something, boycott the writer of the piece. Its silly and stupid.

  • lucas

so Gays should get back in the closet and not play straight characters.
but what about straights that play Gay.

I mean tit for tat. Gay actors can only play Gay characters and Gay characters can only be played by Gay actors.

oh and no more of this Brits playing Americans and Americans playing Brits, Asians playing Iranians and whatever all. All actors can only play their natural born ethnicity and citizenship in their natural accent whatever that might be.

Oh and how about adding also that there will be no more changing things when you do a remake or an adaption, then we can burn M Night’s version of the Last Airbender with its pasty faced Eskimos and ‘Asian’ kid from Texas.

  • Mila

    LOL @ Donovan!

  • Realistic

In regards to this topic it does not matter if a person is in the closet or not they still will be gay/lesbian when the cameras are off and they leave the set, so I do not see why a gay/lesbian person can not play a straight character I mean it is called… acting. Comments like what the Newsweek guy made is part of the reason some of these “celebs” beard and lie about there orientation in fear of not getting roles and being stigmatized.

It’s sad in 2010 people still can’t/won’t be true to themselves!

    Riddle Me This Mr. Murphy………………………
Why is it you can express your Freedom Of Speech
And Newsweek can’t? A bit one sided hypocrite now aren’t we. You are just as racist.

  • Hypocrite

I’ll buy because Newsweek is using Freedom of Speech Like Ryan,
How about Boycott Glee. Now do you like it.

  • lene

Jon Groff is Amazing on Glee. The chemistry he has with Lea is just… WOW!!! Jesse and Rachel are amazing!!!

The messageboards have exploded with Jesse/Rachel lovers! KEEP ST.BERRY TOGETHER!

    Hook Finn up with Kurt!

  • Gregory

I’m a gay male, always have been. But I can still stand up and say that article was not homophobic. He is only pointing out what he thought about those performances. As far as “Promises, Promises” goes I have to agree…very wooden.

I wish people wouldn’t throw around words like homophobic, racist, etc unless they truely apply.

  • Josh

Ramin has a long history of homophobia….
Not only did he write this piece disparaging gay actors who play straight roles…
Not only did he blame effeminate gays and actors for hurting gay marriage….
Not only did he go on O’Reilly to do a hit piece on Adam Lambert last season on American Idol (where he depicted Kris as a good straight Christian and Adam as a godless heathen gay even though it was known that Adam was Jewish)…..
But he also blamed that 8th grade kid (Lawrence King) that was murdered by his classmate (who shot him in the head in class) for his own murder because he dressed effeminately at school and therefore was flaunting his sexuality.
I don’t care what Ramin or his friends say, he is a DISGUSTING SELF HATER who has an obvious problem with effeminate gays.
It is important for us to defend the most effeminate gays because they are the ones who face the most ire from the haters.
Ramin wants us to pile on them too and throw them under the bus.
Ramin’s self hating homophobia NEEDS to be condemned by the gay community.

If I was that young man’s mother, I would hunt this bastard down and kick his white ass up and down the block. To say that my son ‘broght on his own murder because of how he dressed’ is HATEFUL. He should be hogged tied and taken to an island where EVERYONE is gay!!! Let him wake up to his own nightmare! HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE MAN!!!

  • lol

    what a loser

    grow up, Ryan

you only have a career because of your sexual preference

  • biggs33

I did not know (or care) that Groff was gay. He’s doing a believable job as far as I can tell what a teenage singer is supposed to act like (seeing as there is a pretty wide range of human behavior available).

But condemning an article because of the author’s opinion? What the hell happened to freedom of speech? People shouldn’t just throw out severe terms like “homophobic” or “racist” or “sexist” every time they want to rally people to their side of a difference of opinion. That kind of knee jerk oversensitive paranoia weakens us all. I think the Newsweek author is owed an apology.

  • Erin

Agreed, I didn’t even know JG was even gay so obviously this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about!

@biggs33: Put Ramin’s words into another context seeing as they don’t seem to connect with you, since they obviously don’t affect you. It is as ignorant and inhumane as saying “this BLACK woman can not portray this woman because she is TOO BLACK”. Discrimination is NEVER acceptable.

  • a holton

I think we should boycott Ryan Murphy for pulling Chord from being gay.. bacuse the kid got so much attention. i am not allowing the show back in the house. Its like saying gay people can only hook up with less attractive, like this new Dennis they are trying to replace him with.. bad move. maybe my couple sets wont make any difference but lose enough your off the air jerk
