Alexis Jordan Interview -- EXCLUSIVE
Alexis Jordan is Star Roc/Roc Nation’s new teenage sensation and she gave her very first interview ever to JustJared.com! Check out what the fresh-faced young artist had to say:
JJ: Congrats on your “Happiness” video! It’s fresh. How did the song come about?
AJ: [Beatmaking duo] Stargate brought me “Happiness” and after I heard it, I had to record it right away! I was so excited because it’s a universal record and really uplifting. I think the world needed an uplifting song. And it’s got a dance vibe, too. When you listen to it (sings), you just want to sing it all day. And anyone can hum, right?
JJ: Who are your musical inspirations?
AJ: Janet Jackson, Beyonce, of course, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Michael Jackson. I actually met Beyonce a couple of times. We hang out at Jay-Z concerts a lot. I’ve met Mariah Carey, too. Really pretty and awesome.
JJ: Did Beyonce give you any musical advice?
AJ: She told me to stay focused and that I got it – don’t worry about anything!

JJ: Is your album complete? What’s the vibe?
AJ: It’s almost done – almost! It’s obviously pop and I’ve got some urban, I’ve got a reggae/country vibe… I would describe myself as a pop-dance artist… with a little soulful flair.
JJ: Do you play any instruments?
AJ: I used to play the flute and I try to play the piano once in a blue moon.
JJ: Do you draw upon real-life experiences when you write your own songs?
AJ: Yeah, I actually wrote a song on this album about this journey that I’ve been on. I was on America’s Got Talent and then the YouTube craze to meeting the greatest rapper alive, Jay-Z. It’s been really rough but really good!
JJ: Do you have any ballads on the album?
AJ: Yes! They’re very pretty. [Producer] Espionage did an incredible ballad for me. All it is is my voice and a guitar. I can’t wait for the world to hear it!
JJ: What’s the best concert you’ve been to?
AJ: Jay-Z! No one’s beating that one. It’s the only concert I’ve been to!
JJ: You’ve only been to once concert in your whole life!
AJ: Yeah, but you know what? I love to perform myself. My dad used to make me go to Burger King. He’d say, “Sing for ‘em after they’ll make the food!” Everyone would be cheering and that would be my little concert.
JJ: Your parents aren’t in the music biz, are they? Are they supportive of your career?
AJ: My parents are very supportive of my music career. They’ve been there from the beginning – they’re not in the music industry! We did this from scratch.
JJ: And do you have younger siblings?
AJ: Yes, I do. I have a sister, she’s sixteen, and I have two brothers, 12 and 7. So yeah, I’m the oldest of four so I’ve gotta keep that up! And then my mom manages me on top of that, so I’ve got high expectations!
JJ: Does that interfere at all, being a mom and a manager?
AJ: No, because she’s already my best friend, so we’re in this 100% and that’s the one person I can count on!
JJ: Your 18th birthday was last month, how did you celebrate?
AJ: I was with my family and we went shopping and my family and I went to the Olive Garden. Unlimited pasta, unlimited breadsticks!
JJ: Did you get any cool gifts?
AJ: I got a Tiffany’s bracelet from the Roc Nation family and a butterfly necklace from my mom and dad. I got my first Blackberry! And then I got a ring and a Louis Vuitton bag from my Stargate family, so I was so excited! And then, of course, I got a music video for my birthday, too, so that was icing on the cake.
JJ: What are your next steps?
AJ: I plan on touring and making this album the hottest ever and leaving my mark for the summer.
JJ: Thanks for speaking with me and I can’t wait to meet you!
AJ: I can’t wait to meet you either. I’m gonna give you a big hug! JAREDDDDDD!
