Enrique Iglesias: Latino King of Pop?

Enrique Iglesias: Latino King of Pop?

Enrique Iglesias is crowned Latino King of Pop in the June/July 2010 issue of Para Todos magazine.

His new album Euphoria drops July 6. Several songs were produced by RedOne (Lady Gaga) including, “I Like It”, “Why not Me”, “One Day at a Time” (featuring Akon) and “Dirty Dancer” (featuring Usher). Here are some choice quotes from Enrique‘s interview:

On his new album: “This album is unique in my career. Ten years ago, I wanted to do something half English and half Spanish, but there was no time and the record company was not prepared. Euphoria catches me at my most creative moment. I worked with only three producers and we are all friends, so it was a very relaxed setting.”

On where he plans to tour: “I believe that with the exception of Alaska, everywhere. (laughs) The album takes considerable effort for the whole team. It’s like having two girlfriends and the two must be given proper attention (referring to Euphoria having both half English and half Spanish songs).

On his love life: “In terms of my personal life, the sea is calm, with waves, occasionally a tsunami, but even in that, I was lucky to have found Anna [Kournikova]. She’s a great girl, smart and it’s our degree of independence and freedom that allows us to be so close.”

    Ok, lame question (yes I admit) but maybe not so lame: My friends and I debate the word Latino versus Hispanic all the time and no one has answered this properly. When is it ok to use Latino and when is it ok to use the word Hispanic?

    Also, Enrique’s father is Spanish from Spain and his mother is Filipino so is he Latino or Hispanic? I get confused by all this. You know those boxes that say, Hispanic, White or Hispanic, non-White? Why is that? Anyone?

    I have been using Latino and none of my South American friends have ever corrected me.

  • umwtf?

    LATINO KING OF POP? LMAO When was the last time he had a hit record, a hit album.. a hit anything ?!

  • lovely

    @happy girl:

    Latino although he’s really a Spaniard and he’s also asian. Hiispanic referes to Spanish speaking Caribbean, central americans and Mexicans.

  • Me

    @happy girl:

    What do you mean with “south american friends”? THE AMERICAN CONTINENT IS DIVIDED IN 3 PARTS NORTH, CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA.
    So, your friends are from…where?????

    What’s the problem with “latino” or “hispanic”? Who cares??? There are more important things than put a label or stereotype on each person.

  • anne

    It’s Hispanic. @lovely got it the other way around.

  • Me

    @lovely:

    Again…the AMERICAN CONTINENT IS DIVIDED IN 3 PARTS: NORTH AMERICA (CANADA, USA AND MEXICO), CENTRAL AMERICA: FROM GUATEMALA TO PANAMA AND SOUTH AMERICA: FROM COLOMBIA TO ARGETINA.

    There is not caribbean continent, or mexican continent, or latin continent. It’s the american continent.

  • um

    He’s Euroasian, HIs mother is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!! His dad too in his day lol His mom is a good friend of George clooney.

  • Nadia

    @anne:

    People from Spain are not Hispanic. They are European. In the Western Hemisphere there seems to be a fantaticism of people who have a Spanish speaking background to call them Hispanic or Latino. If you need to label it’s either Latin American or South American. If from Spain it’s European.

    Since you seem so hell bent on being obnoxious, and for the life of me, I don’t understand your hostility, I will point out to you that Spanish is spoken in Puerto Rico and The Dominican Republic. As far as I know, they are neither in North, Central or South America, and are in fact Caribbean Islands.

  • http://happytoo.com happy girl

    I asked because I have been told sometimes Latino is now considered politically incorrect while some say Hispanic is politically incorrect. I was simply asking for the politically correct term. Geez.

    I notice, for example, on the news or during a political speech – the term changes depending on who the person who is speaking. My friends are: some Mexican, some Argentinian and a couple from Ecuador and Puerto Rico. The ones from Spain say they are Spaniards. My Mexican friend calls herself Latina. But there are “Hispanic Studies” courses offered in colleges while there are also “Latin-American Studies” courses. Dunno. Still confused. I’ll ask someone else. Geez.

  • pat

    why does he always look so sad??? i mean he has everything in the world a person can ask for what is his problem SMILE for gods sake!

  • julia

    i heard him in an interview and they were talking about him being half spanish from spain and half asian his mom being philipino and he answered he was spanish who cares anyway

  • From Paris with love

    Hispanic , Latino and Latin-American are almost synonyms although the words Hispanic and Latino are mainly used in the USA, or other countries, to designate IMMIGRANTS or people with latin-american origins. The people who actually live in latin-america, who are not immigrants, never call themselves hispanic or latino since it’s a given.

    Spanish, Spaniard is someone who comes from Spain.
    (And let’s not forget that latin-america includes Brazil – whose language is portuguese – that’s why it’s called LATIN America and not just Hispanic America)

  • http://jastjured.com Slig

    He really like arab

  • Nice

    I think the title is supposed to be King of Latino Pop because that’s what he sings. Pop songs in Spanish. Unlike others who specialize in Salsa (like Marc Anthony), Merengue, Bachata, Cubano (son), Tejano, Reggaeton, Cumbia, Mariachi, etc….

    He’s still cute. Those are some good genes he has. Anna is bad looking either they should try to have some children. They have been together a long time. Good for them.

  • rumor has it

    wait i though and keep reading that he has or had a girlfriend from Brazil i read shes a gorgeous brunette model i dont know if she lives in Brazil or elsewhere but theres always comments on this subject maybe he does see her an anna he is single anybody else read or hear this?

    @From Paris with love:
    it also depends where are you from to accept the definition of Latino or Hispanic. Some just canot accept that Latin has a relation or it is almost the same as the other acception. They will argue some race and language aspects, no matter what is the culture the person has grown into.
    Enrique is mixed race, of course. Even if his mother seems to feel very comfortable as a Spanish woman due to her upbringing more than a Filipino one, she is still Asian. And Enrique Iglesias went to live to the US very young, after his grandfather was kidnapped by ETA. So he may feel the Miami culture as his own, not really just Spanish.

    My opinion is that somehow all Spanish speaking countries and Brazil share
    more than those dominated/colonized by Anglo or Dutch countries. But there are always fights in opinions since some South amricans feel more Euros and dismiss the Lating part, arguing that they “didn’t” mix with natives. The culture is more than mixing races, IMO.
