UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie is imploring the public to not forget refugees by observing World Refugee Day 2010 this Sunday (June 20).
“Having a home, a place we belong, a place we feel safe, is something most of us take for granted,” she says in a new PSA, which you can watch below. “Please remember the millions of people around the world forced from their homes. Because the only hope of return is to not be forgotten.”

It is important to always remember and feel and act with compassion to refugees the whole year. Don’t forget that we all not as individuals but members of families countries have been refugees in our life. It is not hard for a country to became in war and people in need of refugee. Treat others as you’d like them to treat you!

Shame on you! Don’t you know the UNHCR only has World Refugee Day in years in which Angie has a summer movie to promote? Other years the refugees are forgotten entirely or are forced to crash the World Troll Day festivities. On a happier note- I am pleased to see Miss Angie raising awareness for the refugees once again. This woman was given so many advantages its refreshing to see she isn’t wasting them just on herself. What a turnaround she has made with her life. This was once a lost kid who thought she had it difficult, but openly admitted she had no idea what pain really was until she met some of these incredible souls. I have to say I love when she adds another member to her family. I always think theres another person who will watch and learn through his/her parents and will eventually help make a difference in our world too. Angelina and Brad will undoubtedly be so proud of them all.

He has taken up the cause!!! Or at least I’m just finding out about his involvement!! He’s is so knowledgeable and explained to the hosts and viewers that it’s not only the conflicts around the world that we should take notice but the refugee situation in these areas. He was so passionate but did not preach. He was more like a professor explaining how things are in his famously folksy manner. It made you wanna help in some way.

After two weeks of reading up and coming young actors for X-Men: First Class, 20th Century Fox has formally offered the role of Magneto to Michael Fassbender. Fassbender is also being courted to play a villain in the next Spider-Man. He can’t do both and Fox is confident they will make a deal and have him join James McAvoy, who was recently set to play Xavier. Fassbender was offered the role today after reading last week, along with Aaron Johnson, Andrew Garfield, Jack Huston and Eddie Redmayne. Fox will now cast the rest of the roles, with thesps like Ben Walker, Rosamund Pike and Amber Heard among the names bandied. Director Matthew Vaughn starts production in August for a June 3, 2011 release.
Fassbender, who burst on the scene playing Bobby Sands in the Steve McQueen-directed Hunger, had a beefcake turn in 300 and costarred in Inglourious ********. He opens tomorrow in Jonah Hex and also stars in the Neil Marshall-directed Centurion, which opens August 27.

Hi Lara, I just saw your post, so I hope you are still on. About JJB, I can’t quite remember how long it took me be accepted. IIRC, I signed up one day on a whim, received a reply from the admin, but never followed up to see if I was accepted. And then a couple weeks later. I tried logging in, and surprise,surprise, it went through. LOL I am not very knowledgeable or hip when it comes to anything to do with computers, and don’t even know how to initiate a PM at JJB, so I don’t know how to help you to speed up the process. Guli and some others at mega are very good with that kind of thing. What I can do is to ask guli to help you, as I am sure she will be happy to do so.

LAGO AGRÍO, Ecuador, June 18 (UNHCR)- UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has returned to northern Ecuador to see how the situation has changed since she was last in the country eight years ago and to raise awareness about unaccompanied minors and violence against female refugees.
The award-winning actress, who arrived in the city of Lago Agrío on Thursday, visited UNHCR field operations and the isolated community of Barranca Bermeja, located in thick jungle on the banks of the San Miguel River, which marks the border with Colombia. The little village hosts 34 families, most of them refugees from the violence that has plagued parts of Colombia for decades.
In Lago Agrío, capital of Sucumbíos province, she had a reunion with a Colombian mother whom Jolie last met here in 2002. “At that time she had a lot of hope for her future,” the Goodwill Ambassador recalled, while adding: “She was recently treated for cancer. She still holds on to hope.”
The award-winning actress also met with refugee women in a shelter for victims of domestic violence, which is a serious problem in the region.
Some of the women in the centre, run by the Women´s Federation of Sucumbíos, told harrowing tales of beatings, incest and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence. Some women even have to resort to “survival sex” to get lodging to feed their children. Others fall prey to sexual exploitation.
In Barranca Bermeja, Jolie spent time with the community and was impressed by their mental strength in coping with the suffering they had endured in Colombia. One woman fled after two of her family were killed – she did not want to lose any more of her children.
There are around 51,000 registered Colombian refugees in Ecuador, but UNHCR estimates that about 135,000 people are in need of international protection. This makes Ecuador the country with the largest refugee population in Latin America. Many of the Colombians live in remote settlements in the north, like Barranca Bermeja, often too scared to seek help from UNHCR and its partners.
“It’s been eight years since I was last here and UNHCR’s presence has grown considerably,” Jolie noted after her arrival in Ecuador. “They are going into the thickest parts of the jungle to reach the refugees, who are living in very remote locations and in desperate conditions,” she added.
“I wanted to come back and meet with vulnerable people and focus on violence against women and unaccompanied minors,” Jolie explained. “I am so happy to be able to reconnect with some familiar faces, refugees I had met with during my 2002 trip.” Single women, girls and Afro-Colombians are among the most vulnerable of the refugee population.
Jolie will be taking part on Friday (14:00 GMT) in a global live video link from northern Ecuador with Washington, DC, Damascus in Syria and Dungu in north-east Congo. The event, which includes refugees as well as High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is one of UNHCR’s top World Refugee Day events this year.
