Joseph Gordon-Levitt Covers DETAILS August 2010

Joseph Gordon-Levitt suits up in Burberry Prorsum for the August 2010 cover of Details, on sale July 13. Here’s what the 29-year-old actor shared with the mag:

On if he was frustrated after 3rd Rock From The Sun: “I would answer that question with a resounding yes. I was scared and depressed for a while. Not that I had any reason to f–king be depressed—I mean, I was going to college and everything. It was not like I was hungry. But absolutely. I was like, ‘S–t, I don’t know if anybody’s gonna let me act. They’ll let me be in another sitcom, but I don’t want to do that. This is terrible.’ Yeah.”

On curbing his pot smoking: “When I was in high school, I loved smoking weed. I loved it. But I cut myself to once a month. That was my rule. And so as the first of the month came closer, my friends would be like, ‘All right, what’s the plan this weekend?’ And actually it’s really cool—when you do it that infrequently, you can really trip. In hindsight, could I have smoked weed on the weekends? Yeah. But it was cool to do it once a month. I still do that sometimes—I go on little weedfests. I’m a pothead. That’s my drug of choice.”

On tabloid culture being toxic: “It’s a bunch of bulls—, a waste of time. It depresses me. And I’m not easily depressed. When I’m at the grocery store, those magazines—they always suck me in. I go, ‘I can’t f–kin’ believe that this is what we’re looking at.’ It’s really sad. Why shouldn’t there be beautiful works of art on the grocery stands? Like Bob Dylan said, you know, art doesn’t belong in museums, it belongs in gas stations… Even in a purely selfish way, I would absolutely argue that you are bringing bad sh– your way by consuming and enjoying that kind of hostility.”

On one day being hunted down by paparazzi: “Look, I’ve met some nice guys who take pictures like that. I don’t want to demonize anybody. But I do think that this notion that certain people are in a higher class than other people is unhealthy. We would be healthier as a people if we quit paying attention to that kind of bulls–t and paid more attention to more pertinent things and more beautiful things.”

Joe next stars in the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer Inception, in theaters July 16!

Drugs like Pot are no more harmful than alcohol. It only becomes dangerous when you become an addict.

  • jake

    @Darren: Thank you.

  • B

    I don’t know who he is….

  • Celia

    Love him!
Take note, Kristen Stewart, this is the RIGHT way to say you hate the papparazzi.

Longas$ list of celebrities who smoke:

  • Keira

I am disappointed by this interview. I liked JGL in movies but his real life personality is way below my expectations.
Praising drugs and swearing a lot does not make him attractive.

  • Portinari

He’s gorgeous & intelligent too. I can’t wait for Inception.

  • meme

no wonder most of Hollywood is dumb. a brain cell a time.

  • Butter_Fly

I liked this interview, aside from all the cussing.

  • mailey

the flying tie shot, really? what an original photographer. on the cover, and then repeated again in-mag no less.

@meme: You don’t have to be smart or have a whole lot of common sense to act; in fact, those probably work against you. You do have to be beautiful, however. Talent is always optional.
Although the cursing and smokin bits weren’t turn-ons, I think what he said about art in the grocery store was brilliant. The only problem I see is that the current art available is kitschy, inferior paperback novels.

  • shenanyginz

    i heart you jgl.

  • TMNox

@lily @keira: It’s so unfortunate that JGL can’t be honest without being judged. He’s not praising drugs, nor is he advocating his use. That would mean he would say something like, “I love weed. Everyone should use it.” He just uses. No one , especially him, is a saint.

And everyone has a toilet mouth – I bet you do, too. Don’t be so judgmental.

  • Keira

    1. I don’t swear. My vocabulary is rich enough to express feelings without cursing.
    2. I don’t like any celebrity bragging about drugs (or any unhealthy habits) as they are (whether they want or not) role models for some people.
    3. If one lets someone to publish personal thoughts one must be prepared that those words will be judged,

  • Deidre

Mr. Gordon-Levitt seems extremely jaded and very in touch with himself therefore, he doesn’t need to “over extended” to get some point across via DETAILS magazine. I get it. Glad to see you :)

  • Deedz

I feel like he’s trying to be provocative and edgy, but he’s just coming off as annoying. Next.

@Deedz: LOL at stiff sheltered people like you who can’t appreciate candor in humans.

  • Marianne

I Love JGL…he’s a talented actor and hot to boot. As for advocating drug use…its not like he’s saying…”Hey everybody smoke up, its fun”…he’s just saying that he occasionally smokes pot. Its not much of a deal. Plus everyone swears.

    I can’t wait to see Inception!!! :)

  • sam

people dont read tabloids cause they are mean they do it cause we are BoRED if actors did better movies and series maybe we wouldnt go to tabloids for entertainment, none of us would die if they went aways most of the “celebrities” would

  • Leanne

he’s cute because his eyes don’t look as Chinee as they did before. It angered him when people asked him if he were Asian.

  • callmewhatever

I loved his personality in this interview to be honest. I was pleasantly suprised. I dont smoke weed but do think its VERY hipocritical that some people on here who probably drink every weekend are judging him for smoking weed. Weed is not cocaine. I dont smoke it cause I have no desire to do so but I do drink so I cant talk.

Also I completely agree with this statement:

But I do think that this notion that certain people are in a higher class than other people is unhealthy.

  • KellStar

He seems very serious in this interview like I pictured him to be. On tv interviews and on SNL he is so hyper lol

  • chris

oh god he looks like heath ledger!!! they are brothers??? or heath don´t died?

  • w

  • Samantha

Well, this was an interesting article. I definitely agree that this was one of JGL’s more serious interviews. Aside from a couple tidbits in the article that irked me, I really do harbor a big admiration for JGL and the way he has handled himself so far growing up in entertainment industry.

  • CanadaGirl

He makes many valid points. What is not noted is that this tabloid culture feeds his career. We’re here talking about him and the little “sound bites” he’s given. Tabloids have been around for ages, but “celebrity” reporting has been around as long as man could put pen to paper and act on stage.
I love coming to this site and commenting, but I know that i could never live a celebrity life. The intrusiveness would make me angry and I’d lash out and go all Sean Penn on a photographer.

  • California Dreaming

Joseph is such a good actor. I really enjoy his films. “500 Days of Summer” will forever be a favorite of mine. Beautiful.
    Excited to see “Inception.”

  • essie

ok first i didn’t know he was 29! thought he was younger, seemed way younger than me when he starred in 3rd rock from the sun & 10 things…
but yeah he sounds kinda obnoxious in this. what a let down

  • Jokergurl

I think he’s a very underrated actor he can do funny, drama, quirky and strangely he’s looking more like the late Heath Ledger (which is probably why Christopher Nolan approached him about playing the Joker in the next Batman movie). Not sure about the pot thing though, there’s a reason why they call it ” the gateway drug” .

  • WA

    I Appreciate Josephs’ HONESTY.
In life one should be HONEST with oneself in order to be Truly Happy.
Thank You JGL, Thank You for being You!!

  • lily

@Keira. Amen sister Amen.couldn’t have put it better myself. The people here should stop defending his drug use.he at the end of the day uses a substance that is deemed illegal.its not like he is using it for medicinal purposes but he is smoking to get me it is the same as him saying he smokes meth.would find cool your answer would be no.REALLY PEOPLE

  • Marianne

I’m just curious, but how do you feel about drug use in movies, or in books. The same with swearing? Do you turn it off? Or do you not care?

  • Caz

I really like this guy – but cmon Joseph- he’s saying how the whole celeb culture sucks… and he makes a living off it… as an actor and by posing in this exact mag.

  • eden

yum yum yum…i’ve always loved his mischievous cute charm.

  • michelle

i like him as an actor, but the interview makes him seem like another pretentious actor who believe he’s going to change the world with his art. gross.
