“I won’t stay down long / Because I’m country strong,” the 37-year-old actress belts out.
To help her prepare for her role, Gwyn tapped her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, to teach her to play the guitar.
In Country Strong, Gwyn plays alcoholic singer Kelly Canter plucked out of rehab by her manager husband (Tim McGraw). The flick follows her career resurrection tour.

It sounds like any other generic country song. They ran her voice through a pretty heavy synthesizer or something. She sounds completely different from Duets.

She learned how to play the guitar through Chris Martin and worked with a vocal coach for months. The director said what you hear is 100% their natural voice.

I like the song but I’m not convinced most of that is Gwyneth. I’ve heard her sing live and she does not sound like that but it’s incredible what they can do in a music studio these days. They can make anyone sound good.

I’ve heard better and I’ve heard worse. I was glad to hear that she is singing for a movie… because if she’s trying to “branch out” into music then it isn’t good enough. BUT it’s definitely good enough for a movie soundtrack. Good for her :)

@Soffie: IA, it’s fine. Nothing spectacular but not awful. Also IA that it sounds extremely different from her vocals on two other movies. I think there was some heavy tinkering done. Your voice doesn’t change this much over a few months even with singing lessons.

oh PLEASE you all know you can’t sing like that. Everyone knows she can sing decently….she was offered a record deal after Duets. This is loads better than any garbage Paris Hilton blather or any number of silly starlets trying to “sing.”

@conrad: I think anyone who’s heard her sing before knows she does not sound like this. I happen to like that duet she did like with Babyface but if this post hadn’t had her name in it, I would have never guessed it was Gwyneth Paltrow.
@conrad: People are not as naive as the fashion and music industry thinks they are. Pragmatic people know auto tune (see also Rihanna) and photo shop gone wild (see her August Vogue cover where they made her look younger than Blake Lively) when they her and see it.
Her voice has improved since Duets (and she was great in that when she sang)… I’m continually surprised that she turned down the record deals people offered her back then. She has a real talent for singing.

This isnt her first singing role. She was in Duets, so I’ve always thought she could sing. Not a really powerful voice, tis a bit plain but she can sing.

I’ve always liked her voice and thought she could always have a good music career. My friends and I like to sing her and Huey Lewis’ version of ‘Cruisin’. She had a much more modern/Ingrid Michaelson smoothness to her voice in that song. But I like what she did with this new song and how she added the country twang/inflection to match her character in the movie.
I find Gwyneth Paltrow has rather hard, masculine features similar to her cousin Kate Moennig – she’s just not pretty, and unlike the cousin does not have the charisma to pull it off.

@gracie: She has had surgery on her nose. If you look at pics of her when she started acting, her nose is distinctively different. Agree, she is very plain. Her mother got prettier as she’s aged. Gwyneth seems to be going in the opposite direction.

If anyone would give her two seconds and watch/read her interviews, they would see that she is very funny, warm, and intelligent. I see what people are saying about her face. Her nose does look sharper as she’s gotten older. The tip was more bulbous when she was young. A lot of actresses have nose jobs so it wouldn’t surprise me if she’s had one. She is starting to favor her dad more than her mom. She was cute when she was younger but not so much anymore except when they air brush her or make her up for events.
For an Oscar winner, she hasn’t received a lot of awards except for the year she was nominated and won. Since Shakespeare in Love, over 10 years ago, she’s received a Golden Globe nomination for Proof and an Independent Spirit nom for Two Lovers. That’s not a lot of nominations. Compare that to Kate Winslet who’s been nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA six times (won one Oscar, two BAFTAs) and a Golden Globe seven times (two wins). For an Oscar winner, Paltrow really hasn’t had that great of a career which is probably why she no longer headlines films and has taken to playing supporting roles in blockbusters like Iron Man. If she hasn’t had the Iron Man films to keep her a float and in the public eye, her career would have probably been dead in the water by now. She owes a huge thank you to Jon Favreau.
She comes across as ignorant and inconsiderate in a lot of her interviews which is probably why she is so disliked. Also agree she doesn’t seem like the happiest person except when she talks about her children. She may be married to a rich man but he doesn’t seem to spend a lot of time with her. Maybe that’s why she often comes across as miserable.

When I heard she was coming out with a country song, I thought: “Oh, no, not another one!” But she does a great job! I had no idea she could sing. Good for her!
I know most of you have opinions of GP and many aren’t very flattering. That’s fine. I didn’t really have an opinion about her personally until I worked as an extra in this film. Gwen seemed to be a really neat person and many of us shared set-lunches and dinners with her and the director, Shana Festes. Nowhere was the celebrity personality that many of you seem to despise her for. I thought she was approachable, funny and lovely. I don’t have a bad word to say about her. Oh, and for those commenting on her singing, I can attest that what you hear is precisely what I personally heard during shooting. I should know, I listened to that song through several takes at different angles, lighting, etc…I’m no fan of country music, but was really impressed at her strength and ability. I watched her work 4 hrs straight, up and down a stage in heels that would kill the average woman and never heard her complain once. I don’t know how she is outside of the world I shared with her in the weeks we spent filming here in Nashville, but all in all, she really impressed me as a person and as a performer. I do rather hope she is considered for nomination for her performance. I think it’s her best yet.
