Rooney Mara: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!

Rooney Mara has won the lead role in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!

Sony announced in a press release today that the actress, who’s the younger sister of Kate Mara, will play Lisbeth Salander and star opposite Daniel Craig in the American adaptation of the film series. Shooting begins next month in Sweden!

Rooney appeared in Youth in Revolt and the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street – she’ll also hit the screen this fall in The Social Network.

Director David Fincher went on a hunt all through Hollywood to find the perfect girl for the role, considering high profile actresses but ended up choosing Rooney, who he’d worked with on The Social Network!

Congrats, Rooney!!

Interesting! There have been a lot of unknowns cast in big roles lately…

  • fresh

I havent seen her in anything. Hopefully she’s up to the task. PRESSURE.

  • yeah

I dont’ think they can top the original, Noomi Rapace was amazing as Lisbeth Salander, but it’s an intersting choice.

  • Haze

Who’s “Kara” Mara? How about Kate Mara instead?

  • Faith

@yeah: Agreed, Noomi Rapace set the bar VERY high. Hope they can do justice to the books, and not hollywoodize it too much..

  • Iffy Miffy

Doubt very much that this will turn out a tenth as good as the original. Oh well, not the first, nor the last thing to be ruined ….

  • postwatcher

Another cookie cutter actress….she looks like every other brunette out there…boring!

Big Role? This thing can bomb…
I love how hollywood assumes that this trilogy will be an automatic hit.
Why don’t they worry about making the first film instead of assuming the 2nd and 3rd?

A lot of successful books have performed poorly as movies.

  • Brightside

I’m still bamboozled by the decision to remake the film? It terrifies me that Hollywood will turn it into a glossy, overly action dependant production with less emphasis on the character development. Will it be filmed in Stockholm? It’s just hard to see how Hollywood can do justice to the book and an already superb film, and to have another city standing in for Stockholm feels so wrong. Noomi was Salander to perfection…can’t help feeling this will be a Hollywood disaster. It’s such a dark, edgy book and film that any Holllywood gloss and CGI will be detrimental. Daniel Craig is a great choice…but I remain dubious.

  • Vida

I know who Kate Mara is….let’s hope her sister is up to the task. Noomi Rapace was pretty AMAZING!! If you have not seen the “original”….skip this Americanized version to come.

    who?

  • http://twitter.com/SaadGKhan Saad G.Khan

she is too young… I dont know how she will pull off what Noomi Repace created.. very difficult.. best of luck..its a Massive Deal!

  • nyop

I haven’t seen the version starring Noomi Rapace, but I will. Having said this though, I think the US version will be great as well. Considering the director attached to the film, David Fincher, this should be amazing! If you haven’t seen Se7en or Fight Club, check them out. I wouldn’t be too concerned about the “hollywood treatment”. It’s def NOT his style.

  • Geena

not sure why for every successful north-european movie there has to be a remake in Hollywood? Can they come up with something original rather than annoyingly and often unsuccessfully redo someone else masterpiece? I would understand if it was perhaps a very old movie, but a recent one? Same happened with ‘Brothers’.

i was hoping that Noomi Rapace would change her mind and agree to do the american version. i agree that this is an interesting choice. it might make sense to have cast this unknown. there is not going to be the same level of expectation put on Rooney that there would be put on say ellen page, keira knightly etc etc.

  • Lisbeth is not found still

Jezus Maria, this is not Lisbeth Salander but a scarecrow in pic.

  • Maria

Noomi Rapace is and will always be the perfect Lisbeth Salander! Remaking it Hollywood style will end in the gutter. This is travesty!

  • ldglns

@Brightside: so we can probably lighten the mood a bit and give it a bright, shiny happy ending -as i have heard the book is pretty dark. another reason why we need to remake the movie is becuase there is nothing but crap out here now anyway. no one is original and the original ones are so oversaturated that you want to run screaming from the theatre.

the girl that is tired of remakes and cried real big tears when she heard will smith was cast in the remake of old boy.

  • Deedz

Glad she’s an unknown. Wish she had that bad ass look though.

  • Guinness

to “jezus maria”; that, unfortunately IS Lisbeth–scarecrow Heroine.
EXCITING!!!!! next month !!! wow. is he done with C & A???

Are they remaking the film or are they doing a film adaptation of the book? I’ve read the book, and everyone’s vision of a fictional story is different. I’ve seen the Swedish version and it was wonderful, but it just seems ignorant to write off this version just b/c it comes from Hollywood or the US. Crap movies, music, etc. aren’t exclusive to one geographic region.

  • maggiexao

Very happy emma watson didn’t make it!!!
i was shocked about those rumors…
don’t know that girl, but i’m sure she will do better than emma watson!…

  • Gia

This girl was horrible in A Nightmare On Elm Street, she has the intensity of a raisin. I know A Nightmare on Elm Street isn’t shakespeare but this girls acting is like watching paint dry.

  • Frida

They’re making it in Sweden, the actors are supposed to have swedish accents… why the HELL are they remaking it in the first place?! **** Hollywood!

  • Guinness

looks the part, I wont’ judge until Dan makes her a star. good luck with sleeping with DANNNNNNNNNNNNNNN aaaaaahhhhhhhhh! life is sooo unfair!!! Seriously, she has to nail it, everyone will be watching, and I think she would NOT have been chosen if she didn’t have talent… ….BUT don’t ever say “it’s NOT who ya know, it is what ya know”—if you have ever thought that. Its a game, she won big time. And who cares what she looks like now cuz she AINT gonna look anything like herself in the movies. wow. she has to be in HEAVEN! some other pics of her. From horror movies to Dan—wth that all about?

    hi peeps.

  • lexy hates bilson

She looks like she’ll be a good choice for the role. So far it looks like HW is trying to remain true to the book.

  • remake

the first Swedish movie was good, the second one was horrible and the third one ok.
So Fincher will surely do better.
Only Noomi Rapace was really a class act, so I’m looking forward to this new adaption.

  • http://justjared.com Hayley

David Fincher also directed Benjamin Button. The special effects were brilliant but he recycled Forrest Gump material. There was zero chemistry between Brad Pitt and Cate Banchett. That Fincher film was so over-rated.

  • Kalle

She just starred in Finchers The Social Network – so he knows her and can judge her acting abilities, which appearantly are good enough. Give her a chance

  • LuvMyTofu

Remaking it = very bad idea. Unknown actress or not, she will never come close to Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander. So disappointing that Hollywood is ruining what is already incredibly amazing.

it will be difficult to NOT compare her to Naomi. I guess we will have to endure all the literature on the comparisons and the ratings of who is better… I will try my best not to lose it on someone if this happens too much. It is entertainment, and entertainment is driven by the laws of economics… …”if it is making millions in other markets… hell, why can’t we make a movie out of it? “” she will be her own lisbeth and she will be great…it is inevitable…she has everyone around her to make it great, therefore, the laws of association==impossible NOT to be good or great. aaaaaaaaaahhhhhh

What books on the top sellers list have NOT been made a movie from it? hhhmmmm.

  • Mendel

    to Guinness

“AND MENDEL–did you make it here???”

Yes, here now! And I just got my mitts on the book today, and I’ve started reading – I really like the beginning and am getting into it. I’m starting to form an idea of the characters, and I can definitely see Dan as Blomkvist. Since I know nothing of Mara as an actress, I have no idea if she’s any good, but I can see her as Salander simply on appearance. But it depends if she can emit this power Salander has – that’s the sense I am getting from the character – Salander has this incredible power that makes people take a step back.

“NOW, if MGM can get Bond started…. wow Dan… we are with you… watching in lustful envy… i mean support…. lustful support…. :)”

    Yes, definitely lustful watching :)

Awww boo I wanted Ellen Page!!! Now I don’t know what to think. I just finished reading the book for the 3rd time I hope she does Lisbeth justice!

  • Maria

Noomi Rapace IS Lisbeth and will always be but this Rooney girl is a better choice than Ellen Page or Kristin Stewart

  • yessum

Agree with you Maria, when I heard the rumors that Ellen Page and Kristin Stewart were some of the choices for Lisbeth I almost gagged.

  • Geena

Dee, to be quite honest I think what sounds really ignorant is to do the remake of an already existing movie a few years after the original came out! I have no problem watching good movies coming out of America or HW dear, what I find infinitely boring and rather irritating is having to do a remake … why,Americans do not watch a movie if it is not in English and made in the US? What crap! What’s next, a remake of “Life is beautiful?’ Good luck finding the cast … and writing the script!

  • PrettySimpleton

I think it is kind of obvious how this actress got this part over the others .
The director had worked with her before so most likely the casting couch was involved lol. Wink wink.
Otherwise it doesnt really make sense the casting choice because they needed a name because this film is going to bomb most likely and they needed a name to pull atleast some morons into to see it.
Reminds of Doug Liman( one of the worst directors ever) He always uses the same cheap people for everything he does and for the most part only people he knows.
A : because they will work for next to nothing
B: because they screw their way into the part of course lol

If this director had cast Ellen Page or one of the other known front runners they would of had to pay them alot more and they couldnt of got some quality time on the casting couch ;p Like I am sure they did with this little “starlet” tart of an actress.

  • to 47

most silly comment ever. David Fincher has a reputation, he has worked with good actors and I don’t consider Morgan Freeman, Jode Foster, Edward Norton, Forrest Whitaker, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr.,Cate Blanchet and Brad Pitt and as “cheap actors”.
He has worked with Kristin Stewart before, so he might knew that she was not suitable for Lisbeth.

  • reputation

Reading the latest remarks, JJ shows again, why its reputation is so bad.
Agree with 40 -. why not sit back and wait, what comes out of this.

  • rossy40

    Good luck to her.
    -
Unlike American movie “originals” remade after a few years or so or TV shows remade as Hollywood “blockbusters” – It’s MOST likely being remade so it reaches a far LARGER audience than the Swedish original… I mean, I’d heard about it, but no way was I traveling 100 miles to see it when it wasn’t being shown locally. If it was, I never heard about so I didn’t see it.
    -
It’s like a miniseries I saw a few years ago on BRAVO! that had me seriously glued to my TV – It confused the hell out of me, & when it was repeated a year or so later, I taped it to actually try & analyze it… WOW! Then it was “remade” US-style & it just wasn’t the same. More was explained but…
    -
Maybe someone can help me with a title (thanks in advance)… I know it was set in an old hospital that was cursed – The ghost of a little girl haunts it because she was tortured & murdered years earlier & only a few people see her (including 2 Downs’ Syndrome kitchen workers, a man & a woman, who have the sight & talk in unison). Things keep escalating as the hospital goes to hell while the ghost is trapped & fated to suffer in death as she did in life. It ended with the ambulance driving away & her bloody hand pounding at the window in a vain attempt to get attention… Not sure, but the director shows up as the credits roll explaining a few things…
    -
    HELP!!!
